I am using this performance to teach my 8th grade history class about the music of Southern slaves. This is a fantastic performance and the kids are very interested in it. Thank you for posting!
I'm from Darien too and can't believe I've never heard of this richness. If it was not for me searching my Gullah roots I would have never know of the McIntosh County

The photo with the light shining through (at about 2:14) was taken by Pulitzer Prize winning photographer Tyler Hicks. He came to McIntosh County to do a photo shoot for the New York Times Magazine.
Tiffany25 you man not remember but that our cousin and she has a very heavy raspy voice and by that time her voice was bout gone. So she was doing the best she could to get them notes out. lol
This is a really big thing. As a member of the McIntosh County Shouters and being of this rich tradition very few have ever heard of the shout or even know what "real shouting" is. I grew up listening to these songs and watching those shouts all my life hearing the elders of my family get together and letting them songs go. Lawd my people my people I miss those who have passed on.
@EuphoricImpact Thank you, I first heard it on a PBS special, and had to hear more. I especially love that one old lady screaming her throat out, love the soul - history.
