The energy that masterful age creates with prodigious youth is what's really wonderful about this performance. For an equally breathtaking comparison see this same concerto played with the age/youth roles reversed -- a dashing young Ricardo Muti on the podium and the old master Arrau at the keyboard. It's on yt -- probably in the sidebar links at right.
@aslanov i believe you're right. i think this is the beethoven cadenza. it would be fascinating to hear the rubinstien cadenza. does anyone know which pianist's recording feature it. would also love to hear the busoni cadenza to this concerto. still it's hard to imagine anything more perfect than what the master himself wrote.
Partty I think it's because Krystian pretty much constructs his own piano in order to make the piano sound just right for the piece he is going to play. He's very knowledgable about the Steinway.
grandiose :)

Thia is NOT the "Rubinstein cadenza"---This is Beethovens cadenza.

I think this is beethoven's own cadenza. Rubinsteins is far more different.
