I was an extra from the late 1970s until 2005. There was a Screen Extras Guild until the late '80s. I worked in more than 100 movies and more than 140 TV series. Things have changed since those days but if I were young I would enter the extra field again. I did get lucky and I became an actor and cast member of Dear John from 1988-1992. James Dean was an extra. So was John Wayne. Some of my extra friends went on to become stuntmen and some got acting parts.

1st step if you want movie extras work... move to California or New York. New Mexico, Florida and parts of Canada would be second rate level... any other state you'll be lucky if you land 1 gig in 2 years.

Some tips too. DO NOT bring a camera or take pictures on your cell phone while on the set. If they catch you, you risk being kicked off. Pay close attention to what the film crew wants you to do. Being on the set of a major motion picture was awesome, but alot of hustle and bustle as well and these guys aren't there to babysit anyone. So follow the casting director carefully!

Nope you do not need acting skills. It's alot of standing and moving where the film crew needs you. I was an extra for the new Denzel Washington flick, Unstoppable yesterday..It was a cool experience!

Check your paper or check the web for casting calls in your area, I found out through a newspaper, but the web is also a great place. Make sure you take a nice photo of you and blow it up to an 8x10 if you can. List any kind of experience you may or special talents. Sometimes you don't even need those. Chances are there's a good possibility you get called as a background extra, oh, and be available as much as you can cause they may need you back. I was called back 3 times while they were here.

I've been involved in indie film making for 3 years and done more up front roles..so I've had acting expereince like in actual speaking roles. that's how I got started. You don't need acting experience if they are looking for background extras. If they like what they see they may make you a title role, like a cop or fireman, or news crew..good luck!

I agree with chris! It is some of the ways to get on the big screen if you want to be an actor. I was an extra in a western movie, but the director pinpointed to me to see if i wanted to say 1 line. I get my pay + extra $200 for 1 line, thats like more then an 8 hour shift pay weeeeeeeeee, but its not about the money =) ;) or is it................for some people

Think about it, the more people that audition, the harder it's going to be to actually be an extra. Being an extra almost sounds too good to be true.

speaking as a film student, i can vouch for the horrific wait times. ugh it litterally can take a minimum of 2 hours worth of work to get 10 minutes worth of films and thats counting if everyhing goes right the first time and even then extra shots must be taken for hopes of a better shot or back up so while set work is being done everyone else simply has to wait around and for long peroids to.
