  • kt88s or el34s?

  • You play great, man. Plus, you have helped me to make a decision about buying one Hot Stack :)

  • Kyoko Fukada :D~

  • "Riggs... I'm too old fo dis shyit.."

  • ...Cry for you^^ Great Song, great Amp, great playing!!!

  • loving the tone

and your playing ain't half bad for a week off :)

i'm a little scared to pick up my guitar today after about 5 days hah

  • How do you like the governor manowar mix? I am thinking on going that route. Does the manowar give you more of a tighter sound?

  • very tasteful

  • What amp model is this???? Since I am more a Marshall guy I have thought about selling my Egnater Mod 50 and getting a Splawn. How is the clean channel?

  • Splawn Competition. No clean channel. :)

  • this is the most brutal song since devoured by vermin lol. no seriously though you rock.

  • Andy Timmons - Cry for you is the name of the original song dammit

  • Andy Timmons. That's the very first thing that came to mind.

Great playing man. And wicked tone, especially for just raw amp.

  • is that opeth?

  • Why so he can play with poor technique? Possible rsi injury from akward wrist postion?

Nice amp man the tones are amazing for the volume its at

  • Because as we all know, you can't possibly be good if you hold a guitar properly. Be br00tal, play at your kneez!!!!!11!

  • Why so he can look like slash, zakk and all those other ding dongs that play down at their knees, and cramp the wrist by having too reach under the neck.

  • Well for one the guy looks really tense, which can not be a comfterble playing position. Playing high gives some better controll but you get more freedom in ur wrist for picking when its a little lower. I never said drop it down to his knees. And also a little lower does look better man

  • great tone for low volume,

Is that the quick rod model Splawn your playing?

secondely where can I get that backing track that your using sounds great.

  • Nice tone. I think any amp can sound good at low volumes. Tone starts with technique. If your technique is good, you help your tone. That's why great players sound great no matter what they play through.

  • what's kind of pickups are you using?

  • That's why I put this stuff in the info box. :P

(Duncan Custom in the bridge, Hot Stack in the neck.)

  • Your playing was very heart felt; You would love David Gilmour's on an island c.d- Check it out, Peace

  • Hey There! I just got my Quickrod and a 2x12 splawn cabinet. At the head, there are two speakers output. Which one should I use? Also, my cabinet has two inputs, which one should I use? Or should I use two speaker cable connecting the two outputs from the head with the two imputs from the cabinet? I am sorry my ignorance on that subject! Thanks a lot!

  • Your name is mesaboogie2007, you bought a Splawn... and you don't know how to plug the thing in? *epicfacepalm*

  • One cable from either of the outputs on the head to either of inputs on the cab should be fine! Do not use both!

  • I played a Splawn at Guitar Center a couple of days ago and after owning a multitude of high end tube amps, I have to say that this was the BEST sounding amp I have ever put a guitar through, simply amazing!

  • This amp/sound obviously inspires you. How about more?

  • I guess I just feel there are thousands of bedroom noodlers on here already. Who needs one more? Thanks though. :D

  • You are playing Andy Timmons note for note and "in time." That is not noodling! I still get a kick out of watching your videos now and then. One of these days I will need to make one with my Quick Rod. Maybe I will ask one of my friends to loan me their video recorder sometime. I love the whammy bar lick at 4:16.

  • thats a note for note of the Timmons song?

i must not have heard it in a long time.

I guess andy must have copied this dude

    for sure

  • I have the Andy Timmons CD, and yes I think this is a great take on the song. I have never heard Andy play it the exact same way twice. There are always little variations here and there. This is as good as anyone else I have seen cover the song. I believe I may have seen a version by you before that was pretty good too.

  • it's not even close to the timmons version, but that is not the point of this vid.

    cool playin and great sound!!!

  • beautiful stuff brother

  • Hey great playing man!

Where did you get the backing track from?

  • Two questions: What is your gain knob set at in this video?? Why did you get a Competition when you can get a Quick Rod/Pro Mod/Nitro for only a couple hundred dollars more & they have half power switches??

  • 1. Mostly all the way up, but I was switching between OD1, OD2, and the three gears randomly on the footswitch, so it doesn't tell you much. 2. I don't play out any more, and a Quick Rod in 50 watt mode is still not a bedroom amp! The Competition with its 30-watt Triode mode is more home friendly. Plus, I haven't needed a clean channel since high school and found the single channel simplicity attractive. Thanks for watching. :)

  • Hey now that splawn has come out with the volume switch in the loop so that there is no need for a volume pedal anymore to get good bedroom level volumes, would you still recommend the competition? or nitro, quickrod, promod? thanks.

Also, how much diff would the kt88's sound in this amp of yours?

  • very beautiful, and good tone, but if I could, maby to suggest not such a wide vibrato at the soft begining and smoothly make it larger and more pronounced as the sound gets louder etc. Good playing

  • wow.

    The amp sounds great!

I dont know what you were playing but it sounds really beautiful!

  • What kind of speakers does your cab have?

  • In this video, an Eminence Man-o-War and a Governor.

  • Oo ok thank you

  • I just heard "Cry for you" recently thanks to youtube. The Splawn sounds much better than Andy Timmon's Mesa amps IMHO! Nice job - low volume and all!

  • 9 out of 10 Splawn videos have people doing the same palm muted/pinch harmonic/overtone/ack wylde thing. What's up? An army of clones?! At least this one does have a bit more variety in it. Thanks for that! Who needs a QuickRod?!

  • Only Splawn videos? That goes for ANY amp type on YouTube. I'm glad I finally found someone willing to show off a lead tone with some reverb and melody.

  • i hear a little cry for you influence.

  • no pedals or effects !! now thats how an amp should sound without anything coloring it! NICE !!! you have me convinced 100% dude !! this is my next amp for sure. I take it that the amp breaks up sooner as you described cause it is at half power. so that is 25 watts cause it is 50 wts ? nice sustain as well. breaks up quicker cause less headroom. awesome amp. I have serious gas for this thing lol !!

  • It's not running with only half power tubes, the PT's are in triode mode instead of pentode mode.

  • Scott Splawn is a Christian and I am sure there are a few Splawns at his church. Splawn's Web -At Splawn Amplification, we are committed to the highest customer service standards and product reliability, due to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. The way we handle day to day business revolves around this relationship. We give all the honor and glory back to the One who is fully responsible. If you have any questions or comments about this mission statement, please feel free to contact us.

  • This was intended to be a reply to Zappaelcrappa's question below about using a Splawn in church, but I forgot to click reply. My comment regarding Scott Splawn being a Christian was not meant to be a random comment.

  • jam version of "Cry for You" by andy timmons. haha

  • How do these 'gears on the Splawns work? Are they useable mid-playing, or is there volume inbalances etc? Is it useable like clean/dirty channels?

  • On this model the Gears are footswitchable, but not all models. Don't notice a volume imbalance really, just different voicing and levels of pre-amp gain. They're all dirty, though. 1st is already like a hot rodded Plexi, 2nd is thicker, bassier, ballsier with more gain, 3rd loses a bit of the fat and adds yet more gain. And there's two overdrive settings on each Gear, for a total of six sounds.

  • Are you using the low power setting on this video? I am thinking about getting a Quickrod and I would probably be using the 50 watt setting most of the time. I love your tone here, as well as in all of your videos. My hope is that I will be able to come close to your tone by using the QR at half power and using my Rocktron Xpression effects unit assuming that you are running at full power/50 watts here.

  • Yeah, this is the low power setting (Triode) on the Competition. The tone and feel are quite different from 50 watt mode. It's a lot looser, warmer, and less articulate. Full power can be really bright and aggressive, which isn't always what you want. I take it you are going for a QR because you need a clean channel?

  • I play at church and I kind of need a clean channel also since we play a wide variety of styles. My favorite players are Yngwie, Uli Roth, Jeff Beck, Gary Moore and players like that. I am sure that the competition would be perfect for me otherwise. Thanks again, and I love your playing and your tone.

  • Splawn in church yikes ! Do you want the parishioners to think your the devil? There are tones of amp for that venue

  • You would not fall a sleep when we play. We play a lot of different styles and I am encouraged to not hold back and play by our worship leader. I play a lot of bluesy soulful stuff, but I get to play heavy stuff and even shred at times. We have a lot of original stuff that we plan to record. Our church is a modern church and I am blessed to play with some incredible musicians there. I rotate weeks with another lead guitarist who uses a Marshall TSL 100 half stack. I get my Quick Rod tomorrow.

  • Great Job on the Any Timmons song. I have this CD and you really nailed it.

  • I mean Andy Timmons. The tab for "Cry For You" is available from Andy's web site.

  • Beautiful!!! I love your articulation and tone. I just got a Splawn Quickrod myself and would love to get that backing track. Could you email me a copy?

  • Where did you get that graphic?

  • Hello again twooos.

The graphic is from a big wall scroll. They're printed on fabric. Get them in music shops in Chinatown, they have a big selection of idols. This was from one of the stores down at the Bowery in NYC.

  • So its a fabric sticker?

  • Oh right, no, it's not stuck on the front, it's fabric cut to shape and then clear-coated over, same method as the floral Ibanez Jems. I had a refinisher guy do it.

  • Oh cool, so you really like Kyoko Fukada then lol.

  • Nice song.. But your Stratocaster sounds better than this Ibanez

  • man that was brilliant, sounds like david gilmour a bit

  • I am getting a Splawn competition just because of this video. Thank you so much!!!

  • hey dude, where did u get this backing track?

  • It's an Andy Timmons song, Cry For You. I think I got it from the Harmony Central forums, but I've had it for ages so I'm not sure. PM me if you can't find it, I'll mail it. :)

  • Playing reminds me of Eric Johnson, or even Blues Saraceno! Nice work!

  • Damn. Amazing tone! Great phrasing, very nice overtones, overall brilliant. I need to get one of these!

  • What amp is this?

Doesn't look like the nitro or quickrod. Sounds great man.

  • Thanks W. This is the Splawn Competition - basically a 50 watt Quick Rod with no clean channel.

  • So, you use the Master to enable the Triode mode? I can hear your pic attack so you must be playing @ bedroom level yet you're getting incredible distortion. Any pedals to help you get this overdrive?

  • Hey Steven. Triode/Pentode is a toggle switch on the back. I probably explained it badly before :/

No pedals, no nothing! Guitar into amp into cab. I really didn't want an amp that I had to hit with a pedal.

  • A brief description of .."Modes"..Pentode, triode, diode etc. for us Nerds.if you please..Does distortion increase proportionately with "Mode" designation?

  • Oh, right. These are just different ways of running the power section. Pentode is standard full-power operation, 50 watts. Triode brings that down to about 60%, 30 watts, making it easier to get good tube tone at lower volumes.

The character also changes very noticeably. Triode is smoother, warmer, more lyrical, flowing, less articulate. Pentode is edgy, hard, detailed, clear. I play a lot on Triode because, in addition to the low volume benefits, it's more forgiving of slop.

  • Hey man. I've had your video on the favourites for a while and this is my first time commenting on it. I really love your tone and especially love your playing style and licks. I think your videos are godly. Anyways you have inspired me to put a Duncan custom in my bridge, and I just wanted to know tonewood is your guitar made of?

I hope to hear from you. Keep up the awesome videos. Maybe do some rhythm work or something.

  • Well, that has to be the nicest message I'll ever receive! You've made this ol' hack very happy.

That guitar is American basswood. I think Hoshino chose basswood for so many guitars because it was cheap and soft and easy to cut into cool shapes. I have a few different woods here, and I have to say that the Splawn responds best, no contest, to mahogany bodies. Now I wish they were all mahogany.

    Thanks for watching, rydock.

  • holy crap their is someone's face on your guitar. its staring at me....

  • just out of interest, what was the master volume at on this clip, and on the 'splawn day 1 clip'?

  • Master volume setting is shown at the end of the clip! For the Day 1 video, I'm not so sure. The Day 1 video is also on full power, whereas this video is all triode.

  • that's a tasty tone - and you make that thing scream! nice playing as well.

  • I just love your splawn tone, I'm very much into an 80's hotrodded lead tone. Only problem is I live in europe so it might be hard to get a splwan one day.

btw last summer I bought an '91 ibanez rg 770 with maple neck, so your movies are a good reference of what tones i could get out of a splawn.

  • Nice tone! How did you record this? Are you miced? Is the backing track playing through speakers?

  • Hey Waylay. This is quick and dirty, all through the camera's built in mic, with the backing playing through a couple of studio monitors. Luckily the cam seems to be able to pick up some of those lows that are missing in some videos. Thanks for watching.

  • Splawns can smoke Soldanos, Bogners and Mesas....

  • one of the best sounding amps in the world..besides mesa, soldano and bogner!

  • sounds good, bet it would sound good if you used a clean boost just to get a tad more gain.. do you ever run delay or verb in the loop?

  • Yup, I normally use a good dose of reverb and a tiny, barely-there tape-style echo, but lately I've been getting back to completely organic tone. I wanted to show that you can get good tone on the Competition at low volume with no toys or tricks.

  • very nice ayton..cool tone!!as soon as i recieve mine ill post too..

  • Thanks, Darren! Waiting is the hardest part. I look forward to some clips when your Big White Stack arrives.
