I heard somewhere that the sexual overtones of the Alien's design were deliberately invoked, as Ridley Scott wanted the Alien to be an embodiment of sexual fear (specifically fear of rape). The facehugger essentially rapes Kane, and that thing that bursts out of his chest is symbolic of the birth of an unwanted offspring as a result of the rape. The whole movie itself is an allegory of the fear of rape.

It is true that the actors playing in this scene, apart from the one playing Kane, of course, were not informed of particularly how their crewmate is going to die. They knew it was a death scene, they knew he was infected (Key word: Infected, not impregnated) but they had no idea what was going to happen.
