A gay man pretending to be a straight man pretending to be a gay man... love it! Wonder if audiences of the day picked up on that irony? Kind of like the moment in "Bringing Up Baby" where Cary Grant (clad in a nightie) explains himself by saying he'd just "gone gay all of a sudden"!
nothing on television is by mistake. who put this scene in the movie knew about rock hudson. it was an inside joke! the problem is that for those who do not know and are acting kissing scenes it is repulsive to find out the truth later on. it is no one's business nor does it make him a worse actor. it is just somet hings are taken for granted and expected from male female relationship.
Man, I fucking love Rock Hudson. He's so awesome! And I love this movie, we have it at home and break it out every now and again. This scene is classic, Rock was just such a badass. Manliest man that ever lived. Always makes me think of the Onion: "Does this shirt make me look gay?" "Yeah, but like Rock Hudson gay, not Freddie Mercury gay." Never gets old!
Rock Hudson ... now that man was jaw-dropping gorgeous -- and also very funny and talented. Rock Hudson, Gregory Peck and Marlon Brandon *gasp, swoon, faint*
To all the 'why did we need to know' or 'why was it important' if Rock was gay. Are some hets still needing to toss that old line & issue around? Following that logic should result in every het star not sharing marriage, BF/GF, info because it is equally 'not relevant.' Second point: If you are a film buff - the fact that Rock was gay is interesting - as the clip shows. It's fascinating and ironic and funny that the HollyWood Machine & Rock 'played with' the issue is so many of his films.
Cool -- at about 3:50 seconds, just after the big kiss notice the guitar player standing behind the singer..... playing a very very rare 1961 Danelectro sunburst Guitarlin !!!
Gay actor pretending to be a straight actor playing a straight man pretending to be a gay man trying to be a straight man in order to get the girl. Great!!!
if you havent seen this movie, what you dont know is that rock hudson is playing two guys in this movie. brad allen (the bad guy) and rex stetson (the good guy). shes never met brad allen, so she doesnt have a clue =) this is a great movie.
doris and rock stayed great friends up until the day he died. she was very supportive to him through his illness .i think that the respect and platonic love they had for one another made the chemistry they had on the screen legendary.
Amereican culture in the late 1960's got a bad case of "relavent-itis". The Vietnam war generation started dissing romantic comedies like this. Not that that war wasn't a serious issue--but the whole critical emphasis was MASH and The Graduate and Hair and Love Story. Light humor was on the ropes. Hopefully we've outgrown that nonsense and can appreciate any movie for its own merit. I don't know about Doris Day's hairdo--but she was a babe! Fweet!
well for one he was in the closet..but for another..in his day the religious right didnt yet control the republican party, and the republicans had a strong libertarian streek...like barry goldwater.
I always just stare in disbelief at doris day's hairdos.. I mean, wtf?! Men had great hair in the 50ies. But the women looked as if they were wearing helmets. Great singer, good actress.. but those hairdos make me crazy.
This man was my dream and my ideal in the 50s! Could never have imagined that someone so handsomely masculine could be gay. And I had probably never heard about such .... Remember I saw a very romantic movie with him called "Never say goodbye", very touching and sentimental but he was so beautiful that I almost fainted when looking at him :-). Would have like to see the movie once more.
@louisalit really? just read aloud what you said! "Could never have imagined that someone so handsomely masculine could be gay". But knowing he is gay is changed your opinion of him? straight or gay you wouldn't have had a chance with anyway.
Hudson was a strange character - a gay man who always voted Republican. Despite going to gay bars and nightclubs he continued to strongly deny he was gay in interviews, long after his movie career had ended.
hahaha...I'm cracking up...this is hilarious.a gay and closetet actor who plays a straight philanderer who pretends to be gay.welcome to Absurdistan:-P
Kinda funny when Rock talks about men who are close to their mothers and collect recipes...don't care what his sexual preference was...too bad he isn't alive today...his fans still love him!!
Funny, but all I can think of when he kisses her is, "He just ate dip! Ooooh, stinky breath!" He was so handsome, though. I love their movies together!
They brought out the best in each other. He was a charming and deft comedian around her, and she was a three-dimensional, full-bloodied woman around him. One of the great on-screen couples of all time. Except for the unfortunate "you are sick" retort, the whole scheme is very funny (not to mention effective).
if had anounced he was gay in the 50's and 60's his acting career would have been over,it was the times back then they were way diffirent then they are now
Inkenyo, why does it bother you so that EVERYONE and thier mothers know that Rock Hudson was gay? You do know that this is 2008 not 1958, there is no need to hide one sexuality.
I mentioned it because I enjoy the irony that knowledge added to the scene. Also, as a young gay person, it is nice to see yourself reflected in history. By all accounts Rock was definitely gay, his wife/beard was a lesbian and he had two long-term male partners after they divorced.
@hisnameisjuicydave Thank you! It never ceases to amaze me that people who insist it "makes no difference" always seem to be the very ones who have a problem with the subject being discussed. If it truly makes no difference then why can't we say it out loud? (And people--he was GAY, not bi-sexual or bi-curious or bi-coastal or bi-whatever the hell you're going to come up with next to make yourselves feel better.)
My most favourite film of all...... it has a girl who is cute, smart, has a career & independance and 2 guys a after her.... what else does a girl need? Plus I adore the house keeper. What a character! You can imagine that she was once like the heroine..young and attractive, but she made the wrong choices in life and always regreted it!
Rock Hudson and Doris Day actually only made three movies together: "Pillow Talk," "Send Me No Flowers" and "Lover Come Back." It seems as if there were more, maybe because they both made similar films with other co-stars, or maybe because the "Doris Day-Rock Hudson" formula became a whole sub-genre of romantic comedy.
I said ALOT like Lee Van Cleef's they spoke very similar... Rock's voice was a little more husky, but his voice of course we know now wasn't natural, in fact nothing was... well of course his looks were.
Up until his tragic death, Rock was one of the happiest men in Hollywood, and unlike some gay people today, he had a great sense of humor. I'm sure he thoroughly enjoyed the irony of the gay switcheroo motif here and in Lover Come Back. Also, he was adored by his female co-stars, even those who knew all about his private life. He and Doris used to laugh so hard making a film together they sometimes had trouble geting through a scene...
