Wow so that is a tourist head? That must be the best way to attract tourism, offer them a shrunken human heand and say "this is what we do to our enimies." At least it will make sure the tourists behave themselves lol.
There was a Science Channel show.. maybe Brink.. maybe Sci Fi Science.. heck it might have been on National Geographic. They showed an invention that made food inside a computer. The guy took the piece of food out of this Jetson styled box and he ate it saying it was very basic and bland. They they made a mechanical device that had elementary moving parts. All from a computer just like the Jetsons. If you saw this show message me and let me know where to find it again. Thanks!
By the way, I have seen lately an artist, forgot his name, who put up an exhibition with dogs chained to a wall who haven't been fed over weeks and looked in horrendous shape. He called it art. He was allowed to do it and even SPCA didn't say anything about this.
I think in the time of this head's creation it was perfectly normal for the indigenous people to do so. Isn't this your definition of capitalism using their own notion of law?
Its funny how people suddenly start to stir up their emotions about this being culturally wrong, repulsive or plain sick. There were far greater horrific deeds done during our lifetime (take Cornelius Sulla - roman dictator - who eradicated populations from the face of this earth. literally killing over 20k people in front of the Senate to influence their decision)
This item has a lot of history behind it and the practice of this ritual has been incriminated. No wonder its expensive.
I love shrunken heads, and I really want one. I would never sell it if it was mine. It seems that the only thing important for him is how much he can get for it....
When they say Tourist piece, they're not talking like going to the African gift shop and grabbing one. These are still antique pieces, the practice has been outlawed internationally as well as the trading ing them (new ones that is).
I like how the guy says its a tourist piece. So then and there i thought the thing wounldnt go over much maybe a few hundred. Then out of knowhere 10k. I was staring at the guy like wtf.
This is a 'tourist' head. What that really means is that instead of someone being killed over the charge of witchcraft or killed in battle, some murderous thugs pick someone at random and murder them just for the skin on their skull so that some tourist can take home an expensive souvenir. Somebody died to satisfy a tourist indulgence. They fail to make note of that in the program and leave it like collecting shrunken heads is no big deal. This gets a thumbs down. Aiding and abetting.
Do away with Oddities. Never once watched this show. Move it to some dead cable channel where it belongs. Bring more of space shows. It's called "Science Channel." Stay with the name of the channel... =/
@TheGenuineChristian Shrunken heads can be historical and scientific, though it's not really a shrunken head. The skin is carved off the skull, wrapped around a wooden ball, and then processed. So... it's just human skin from a head, not the head itself. Hence the head is not shrunken, the skin of the head is merely preserved in a way to suggest that the head could be magically shrunken. No magic, no voodoo nonsense, just disturbingly twisted mummification of skin.

@bluebalute Tourist heads were usually sourced from the morgue, rather than living victims.
Teamwinfan 7 months ago
@Teamwinfan I don't doubt that but there is/was a problem with the heads being acquired elsewhere.
