  • unbelievable! GREAT BARBRA! THE BEST!

  • What's not to love about this song and talent?

  • Looks like the girl next door, sings like an angel from Heaven.

  • Simply the best!!!

  • The vocal on the box set is a different vocal from the "Barbra Joan Streisand" album. Just listen to that last note and how long she holds it, compared to the album version.

  • What a talent. What a gift. Thank you, Ms. Streisand for sharing these songs with us and your voice. Thanks for this post.

  • So difficult to choose a favoriate Babs moment ... but Since I Fell For You is always on my list. Magnificent Barbra at her best....simply brilliant. 2.38 to 2.53 still blows me away....

  • So difficult to choose a favoriate Babs moment ... but Since I Fell For You is always on my list. Magnificent Barbra at her best....simply brilliant

  • This is my favorite Streisand song also. Completely shocked that this song is never one of the songs she sings in concert. Had a female friend who said she could sing just as good as Streisand. I pulled out this song and told her to match this song note for note and she could not. She never mentioned her name and Streisand's name in the same sentence again.

  • She's in fine form here- wonder what year this was recorded?

    very nice.

  • @harponercam, 1971.

  • This is my favorite sung by Barbra Streisand song of all time. The soaring notes on the octave jump are simply the purest sound I have ever heard. No one can sing like this. No one. Except her.

  • Oldest but Goodest~

  • I fell 4 Barbra in 1974 . . . too late . . . too soon

  • I love Barbra Streisand but Lenny Welch owns this song. Sorry.

  • A voice like a smooth, fine brandy!

  • That note at 2:47 never fails to blow my mind!

  • How many times I could sing this song and feel you stop to listen me cry my heart out,

    "When you just give love

    and never get loved

You'd better let love depart (...)

I can't get you out of my heart

You make me leave my happy heart

you took my love and now you are gone

    Since I fell for you"

  • I read that she developed a strategy for her song when she couldn't get acting work; that she would imagine a character from the classics and make her interpretation from that character point-of-view. So, underlying these interpretations are characters such as Media, Juliet and others who helped her shape these performances.

  • Lenny and Barbra - what a duet that would be singing this song.

  • she worked very meticulously to achieve this piece of perfection

  • dusty's is better.

  • AWESOME Thanks for posting this beautiful video from a truly great artist.

  • this is a nice version but this song is so lovely you can't f it up. Im actually looking for a version that starts out the usual way and then continues insrtumentally then the words come in again but they are totally different as I remember it went "faling in love with love is only makebelieve, falling in love is only make believe, in and out and inand out of live..." then repeats like that and i just loved it I had the old school 12 inch but i lost it if u know what Im talkin about help

  • Beautiful rendition by a great singer of a classic song. Much more heartbreaking when Lenny Welch does it, but this ain't bad for second place.

  • Love that song!

    Thanks for posting

  • YES YES YES! JUST LISTEN TO HER <SO HONEST< REALLY A GREAT SINGER!

  • She still does not do a good rendition. Has to be jazzy not pop!

  • no balls

  • She always sang the most beautiful songs and made them sound even greater - in a scale from 1 to 10 for talent she gets a 20! - it is not human for someone to posses so much Musicianship.

Only Maria Callas had similar amount of Musicianship :))

    -At 2:46 she actually hits a G5 :)))

  • Babs....like buttah!

  • When was this recorded? She is the goddess of song! I get chills when I hear it! It's so perfect in every way!

  • Heart-wrenching rendition. Incredible. Did she ever sing it live? I can't seem to find a live version of this song anywhere.

  • wonderful singer...love miss BARBRA!!!

  • Listen to the album version. She's always a trooper. Can you sing with so much energy and emotion whenever?

  • well she just put an indelible stamp on the song incredible tracking of the song she delivers

  • Makes an interesting contrast with Dusty Springfield's version...Dusty has more emotion in there IMHO, but she can be seen singing it...Streisand ought to have done it straight rather than embellish...the song doesn't need it...

  • Great version.

  • Beautifully rendered.

  • Barbra - what a voice.... it gives me the chills.... just devine!!

  • Too flashy, not a Barbara fan...

  • @etalonmireles Too flashy? Do you go to concerts at the cemetary? And the name is Barbra.

  • @etalonmireles it's Barbra, not Barbara, and if you aren't a fan then why did you stop by to begin with? I smell jealousy

  • Interesting seeing the photos from a few years back. She was apt to wear turtle necks to hide some of the lines and looseness under her chin. Nowadays the turtle necks and lines are gone! She has been liberated, but the miraculous instrument of her nose is untouched. That's the classy way to do it!

  • It's not really from "For the Record". It's from the 1971 album "Barbra Joan Streisand".

  • this is the best version ever, i mean barbra is just in a league apart...

  • Stellar performance from a stellar star!!!!!!!

  • When I listen to Barbara I always feel a lump in my throat. She sings out her heart and soul, there so much feeling, such an incredible expression. The best female singer I know.

  • Barbra ... you go girl !!!

  • Strangely, I heard her version first. Knew it by breath and heart when I was a kid, after Dad left us. Sang it all the time. Now I've heard Nina Simone. So different, but so amazing. I heard Babs with the One Less Bell combo first and cried so hard I had an asthma attack. THe words, the passion, the power, the sorrow. And it's so true. It's a true song about real situations, like mine, still, decades later.

  • This is one of the best version I ever heard....

  • I saw Barbara at the Purple Onion in Greenich village when she first sang people, I'll never forget that night, because truley a star was born...

    the brassman

  • I just got a chill......that was astounding.

  • Not surprised she can bring this song to tears. What talent!

  • Some adult-contemporary stations thought "Where You Lead" was too rough and played this "B" instead.

  • impresionante. La mejor version escuchada en la tierra.

  • Impresionante.

  • Wow incredible!

  • @ItzMeOB Yeah, especially on the "Alright" note!

  • I love Barbara the singer,

I can´t stand Barbara the person,

  • @bigtool66 Expand on this please.

  • Another, classic rendition of an ever so eloquent song................

  • Barbra, You've got THE most beautiful nose in our universe as we know this the second you start singing fo all of us , , ,

    LoveYouTattehleh,

    Frankie

  • Barbra, you've got THE most beautiful nose in the universe. We've all come to realize this the very second you sing for us.

    LoveYouTattehleh,

    Cousin Frankie Cheech

  • I will always love these voice !!!!!

    That's all !!!

  • What a great treatment of this song - typical Streisand - starts slow; dripping with pretty notes and phrases but then, like a rocket, she takes off and launches you into the stratosphere.

  • Incredible, so beautiful

  • early on in her career her vocals werent really that hot at all.... however, like a fine wine her voice has matured and become one of the best female vocalist of all time

  • @slapmyfunkybass not at all true regarding her early voice , the first -third of her early recorded albums were not her best , she was was doing endless club acts show guess spots and at the same time doing Wholesale on Broadway. Her voice was taking a real beating and she was pretty drained by the time she recorded these albums. But listen to her early demos here on u tube and they will knock you socks off. By the time the album People was recorded her voice was in super fine shape astarisborn

  • that website (mp4ify) is actually da bomb for extracting mp3s and mp4s from youtube videos like this

  • Like buttah.

  • One of the more awe-inspiring vocals of Barbra's unbelievable repertoire. This is the era that catapulted her to the height of super stardom and almost God-like worship. An absolute original; like how can one person be so gifted?

  • My turntable is broken, no money for a new one, and I was SO longing to hear this.

  • Sham, shut the hell up you racist pig. Why does there alway have to be a goddam moron like you on these posts.

  • this song is on "for the record" but it was originally on the "Barbra Joan Streisand" albumn

  • Perfection! How could anyone top this?

  • Tenderness, nostalgia, vulnerability, longing and passion!! The Streisand way! Just brilliant!!

  • This is the first time I ever heard Babs sing this classic song. Absolutely beautiful job,,,,as usual.

  • Thanks for posting. Her voice gives me goosebumps.

  • the most influential female voice of the last part of the 20th century by a mile

  • Lenny Walch is my man.

    Barbra Streisand is my girl.

They both do a good job singing from the heart. How can I go wrong i got both of the best Thank you love you both Aloha Loko Maika'i ( from the heart)

And i love them both Thank you

  • Toni T. does a great job on this #!

  • Wow this is awesome, her voice is like butta, she hits a note in this that I haven't heard from her in ages, but tht's my own fault for not listening to her very often these days, Babs forever!

  • How can one say this is Barbra's best? We're talking Barbra Streisand.

But I love this one above so many others! Like Sinatra she is talking to you. I'm listening and trying to sing along.

  • This one is on the Barbra Joan Streisand album; one that I recall just sort of appeared out of nowhere back in '73. Like all of her albums of the 70's a MUST HAVE.

  • Wow I am speechless... Such a voice...

  • I enjoy this rendition of "Since I fell for you," but my conscience says the best version of this song was by Natalie Cole and Reba McEntire. There was just something about them that made the song that much more special and thoroughly amazing.

  • I love babs, but nothing matches Lenny Welch's version

  • definitely the best version of this song ever done....even surpasses doris day's 1964 recording - which is really top.

  • I too like the Lenny Welch version and I bought it in the early 60s. However both versions can stand together without comparison, they are both great interpretations of this excellent Buddy Johnson composition from the 40s

  • XXXXXXLNT as evaH! Babs roXXXX...end of Storaaaay!

  • barbra streisand rocks! her voice is so pure! my idol<3

  • lucy1fanwholovesbabs,

I am also a big fan of Barbra Streisand - her versatility spans all the major veins of music...I even have a track of Barbra singing "Three Little Pigs" live at one of her very early cabaret appearences!...And no! ...LOL...She does NOT make a "Pigs Ear" of it ...She does a great version of that old nursery rhyme...:)

Thank you for making such a positive comment.

    Regards,

    trooper7h

  • Very good performance....

  • jaromir,

Thank you for your interest and your comment. :)

    Best wishes,

    trooper7h

  • A sweet rendition.

  • myraj34dd,

Thank you for your interest and your comment. :)

    best wishes,

    trooper7h

  • @trooper7h

Thanks for posting one of my all time favorite Barbra recordings. Her voice is so creamy and of course she has such wonderful control.

And that high G she hits is breath-taking! One of the best notes ever sung- I don't know how many times I would replay it just to hear her pop it out. Incredible.

  • I think Lenny Welch's 1963 version is the definitive one. Barbra just doesn't put interesting textures into her voice and her embellishments aren't special. I liked her best when she was young and seemed to have a sense of humor about herself.

  • highpsi11,

Thank you for that very interesting comment.:)

...Although it is not one I would agree with.

I have Lenny's version in my youtube collection - and although very good - I think that Lenny tends to go OTT with what I call ...almost a 'yodelling ' effect...

Emotion can be conveyed in a single note by a good singer - And Barbra uses her very considerable acting ability in tandem with her vocal ability to do just that.

    My best wishes to you,

    trooper7h

  • i love Babs but i prefer Reba's and Natalie's version, but just to listen to Babs is incredible !!!

  • krystaloy ,

I have downloaded Natalie & Reba's version onto my external HD along with Reba's version of 'A Sunday Kind of Love' which I regard as the Best.:)

    Best wishes,

    trooper7h

  • I wasn't really feeling her emotion here. Then again I got spoiled by Natalie Cole and Reba McIntire.

  • JaydeSabbath,

I was so taken by Natalie's and Reba's version I downloaded their version on to my external HD...

...It is the song that gets to me...,

However, I do think that Barbra's version is matchless...(to each his own)....:)

    Thank you for your comment.:)

  • can u upload reba/nat's version 2 w/out them talking? plz & ty

  • sshirley70,

Thank you for your comment. and your interest.:)

I'm sorry that I cannot help you with Natalie and Reba's version...

I only know of the version that is on youtube.

Best wishe in your hunt for the version you are looking for.

    trooper7h

  • just beautiful......

  • 19jas61,

    Thank you for your comment.:)

    Best wishes,

    trooper7h

  • luv to hear ronstadt record this.a perfect fit for her

  • smokelean,

    mmmm!...Now there's another interesting comment.:)

I reckon that Linda would make a very good job of this very evocative song.

    Best wishes,

    trooper7h

  • God, I wish I could have her voice.

  • jemjean,

LOL...if you did have Barbra's voice then I would have to become one of your biggest fans.:)

Thank you for that very interesting and thought provoking comment.:)

    Best wishes,

    trooper7h

  • I am a Streisand fanatic. I love everything that she does and literally have all her albums, ALL OF THEM. This has always been one of her best songs in my opinion until I heard Lenny Welch's version. Still love her to death but his version is how the song should be sung. Feelings, depth and with a real aching heart. Babs still number one in my book but Lenny takes the prize with this one.

  • You can't have all of her albums, because I've got some as well...

  • lol, OK, thats a good one. I have a copy of every one of her albums, ok??? She still numero uno tho

  • RRIDLEY100,

I guess we will have to agree to disagree on this one. :)

I have favourited Lenny's version of this song but Barbra's version is still tops in my humble opinion.

It is the nature of the song that does it for me. It is one of the most heartrendingly beautiful Blues/love songs ever written and requires not only exceptional vocal quality but also great evocative vocalised acting ability. Barbra does it perfectly.

thank you for your interesting comments.

    Best wishes,

    trooper7h

  • Babs did do a good job on this song, but she AIN'T the the 1 (the best)!

  • savida34e,

That is the great thing about music...everyone has such differing tastes and favourites.

Please enlighten us as to who's version of this beautiful song is your No.1...?

Many thanks for your interest and comment.:)

    best wishes,

    trooper7h

  • As far as I know, he didn't perform it for us. Luther V. would've sent me to the cosmos on it!

  • Nope! Wrong type of voice. Its too deep and Great Luther would be straining to sing it on key. Trust me, this song does not sound good keyed down below high tenor or above mezzo soprano. Luther was a baritone. Hell, even Babs is straining (for her its a push) to get the lower range out.

  • Insightful.

  • savida34e,

    A very succinct observation. :)

    Thank you for your comment.:)

    My best wishes to you,

    trooper7h

  • RRydnew,

It would have been interesting to hear a Luther Vandross version - But I must agree with your comment.

However, I would like to hear a Jack Jones version...I think he could do it justice.

    trooper7h

  • He could if he had that certain something....I dont know what it is but I do agree he has the pipes for it if not that intangable something Babs has and Lenny Welch as well

  • Lenny Welch of course. Babs is good and Dusty makes it smoke more but...this song is meant for those of the middle voice.

  • I see I didn't win you over, but I'm glad you made his version one of your favorites:) I've subscribed to your channel and look forward to exploring it.

    Tully

  • tully2shoes.

You are more than welcome to visit my channel and I hope that you find some more of your favourites in my collection. :)

    regards,

    trooper7h

  • Thanks for that message. I've been a Streisand fan for many, many years now, and I have the album this rendition comes from. You're definitely correct. It's moving no matter who performs it. I was so surprised to find out that it was composed back in 1945. I thought it was a 60's composition. The composer's sister, Ella Johnson, was the first to perform it.

    Best Regards,

    Tully

  • tully2shoes,

I took your advice and looked up Lenny Welche's version and added it to my favourites...

However, I still think that Barbra's version is the definitive one - for me anyway.:)

    regards,

    trooper7h

  • This song was actually composed and first performed in 1945. Lenny Welch version (1963) is better. It reached #3 on the charts that year:) I was 11 years old then and loved it ever since then. It's here on YouTube. Please listen to it.

  • tully2shoes,

Thank you for the correction of the year it was composed...

It is such a wonderfully moving song that you cannot help being moved by the sentiments it evokes - whoever is the singer.

Thank you for your interesting comment.

    My best wishes to you,

    trooper7h

  • Amazing. Leaves me a bit speechless honestly and even more dumbstruck when I see the number of views it has. The dreck that gets million of views and this gets only 13 K?!? Criminal.

  • SuzMtl,

I understand your feeling of frustration...

For me ...Barbra's interpretation of this wonderful song is the defining version.

However, such is the world of music today.

Thank you for your very interesting comment.:)

    My best wishes to you,

    trooper7h

  • Have patience, my friend. Barbra's fans are of a "certain age" and may take a bit longer to discover YouTube. But when they do, it's only a matter of time before they seek out the golden voice of the great Ms. Streisand.

Will anyone be listening to Amy Winehouse in 100 years? Hard to say. But Barbra? Most definitely.

  • caraphyllis,

First class quality will always resist the ravages of time.:)

Thank you for your support and comment.:)

    My best wishes to you,

    trooper7h

  • If they dont discover Dinah Washington first.

  • Oh yeah-have you checked out Luther V @ the Naacp image awards?

  • This song is simply beautiful...it's on my top five list of the best Barbra songs ever recorded. It sends chills down my spine and brings tears to my eyes whenever I hear it...I wish my generations' music could be this elegant and passionate when conveying such raw emotion.

    Thank you for posting. :)

  • RosesLavender,

The thanks go to Buddy Johnson for penning such a wonderful song...And to Barbra for such a wonderful interpretation,

I thank you for your interest and such a great comment.

    My best wishes to you,

    trooper7h

    Thank you for your comment

  • Wow.

  • escrime11,

    ...And double WOW!.lol

Thank you for that very expressive comment.:)

    best wishes,

    trooper7h

  • this is the song i use to turn non-believers to The Barbra Way. it works everytime

  • theblueangel28,

That is a wonderful tribute you have paid to Barbra Streisand - and one I can agree with, totally.

Thank you for your Interesting comment.:)

    my best wishes to you,

    trooper7h

  • Amazing - I have done the very same thing!

  • DebShany,

    Thank you for your comment.:)

    regards,

    trooper7h

  • Best version of this song.

  • I certainly haven't heard a better one yet.

    Barbra's is the tops.

    Thank you for your comment.:)

  • trooper7h....i agree with you 100%...i just get so tired of people comparing this one to that one and so and so does this better than that one,etc...we know what is good and some ARE better than others....

  • Thank you very much for your interest and your comments.:)

I cannot sing to save my life... Nor am I a musician...But when I hear certain songs and certain singer's interpretation's of those songs- a bell rings inside me and I feel good. :)

  • ...everyone brings something differrent to the table..(ella,sarah,sinatra,etc.) unfortunately the table fell over in recent years....i'm just lucky enough to have been around to hear this....

  • dirtyedna,

    Thank you for your comment.:)

This song by Buddy Johnson - for me - ranks as one of the great love songs of all time. The melody and words are so achingly full of blues and soul.

And that is why any good singer - who also has an actor inside them - wants to bring their version of this song to the public's ears.

So far - for me - this is the version that they all t have to stand comparison to..

  • YEAH, BABY

  • jefferzone61

    Thank you for your comment.:)

  • Oy my heart!<3 Delicious. Right up there with Al Jarreau's version, except hers is more dreamy and from the female perspective. Her voice does my heart in on songs like these. *BIG SIGH*

  • TheRealwendy2004,

I haven't heard Al Jarreau's version...an omission that I will set about correcting.:)

    Thank you for your comment.:)

  • She's just unbelievable. I always well up at the least on THAT note at 2:48

  • Shazbut01,

I totally agree with you regarding that note and I can only repeat what I have said in my info column.

"This version of a Buddy Johnson 1947 composition is a brilliantly heartfelt interpretation of a remarkable soul/blue's love song as only Barbra Streisand can do it.

Barbra just emotes with every fibre of her being and it all comes out in her voice...Wonderful."

    Thank you for your comment.:)

  • I think that she sang it live in London in 1994, but i´ve never heard a bootleg version or sort of, i´d love to hear her hitting that note live!

  • BELTERFAN,

    Thank you for your comment,

Barbra Streisand's version is the tops in my estimation.

  • Barbara Joan Streisand- at the top of my list for quintessential Barbra. Especially Since I Fell and ESPECIALLY "Mother".

  • genr8tionx,

    Thank you for your comment.:)

"Since I fell for You" is such a great love song and Barbra Streisand's interpretation is the tops in my opinion.

  • The best and most explosive diva version of the song ever. Originally from Barbra Joan Streisand, one of her best pop albums. What vocal gymnastics? No, really... what vocal gymnastics compared to today's Mariah Carey'd generation?!!!!

  • PlseScowlMore,

    Thank you for your comment.:)

    trooper7h

  • Just woke up this morning and needed to hear this today. Thanks for the post.

  • Chasson0318 ,

Isn't this a great version of this beautiful Buddy Johnson song.:)

Barbra Streisand is still the tops.

    trooper7h

  • The vintage Steisand was deliciously raw and determined ...and it worked! nothing or no one held her back..can't wait to see her honored tonight by the Kennedy Center...long overdued!!!...this box set is one of my favorite things and so is the song and the artist...would've been great to hear a mix of streisand and lenny welch doing it!!!..wow

  • FASHIONCONSPIRACY,

Thank you for your very perceptive comment.:)

My best wishes to you and your loved ones for the New Year 2009.

    Trooper7h

  • I never realized how sexy Barbra could look. some of these pics show her pretty side!

  • This is a verrry sexxxy song by Buddy Johnson.

...And you know what they say?

You look on the outside how you feel on the inside!

    So!...Keep smiling. lol.

    Thank you for your comment.:)

    My best wishes to you.

  • She said in an interview that she'd gone to a famous Plastic Surgeon to have a "nose job" and "balance out her features" and he told her "well, it could seriously change the sound of your singing" so she said NO THANKS.

  • Jibbie49 ,

Thank heavens for that very honest plastic Surgeon!

And my thanks to you for your informative comment...

Best wishes for this Christmas Holiday and the coming New Year.

    Trooper7h

  • You need to se Dusty Springfields live version. She shows you how you don't have to use "vocal gymnastics" to sing this song!
