  • Wow. I've seen this live, and listened to version after version of this song as people cracked, got lost in the changing tone and attitude, and missed the whole point. THIS is SPECTACULAR. She is phenomenal. Blown away...

  • she is so fantastic and beautiful. can't count how many times I've watched this.

  • Sara and Patti on one stage?! I don't know if I could have handled it live!

  • Incredible.

  • @LaCageAuxGypsy I'm well aware what "pop" stands for - that was actually my point! lol So I think this is the first time I have ever heard anyone imply Sondheim's music is popular. If only! I mean, he certainly deserves household name status. But the fact of the matter is that the majority of casual theatre goers never grasp onto his shows. You know what they say, "You don't leave your brain with your coat at the door when you see a Sondheim show."

  • Having seen seen the original Broadway production several times, I can tell you for a fact that Sarfa Ramirez is better than the original actress who performed this role. It's worth noting that Stephen Sondheim never really liked this song and it was cut from the movie version that hal Prince made with the late Elizabeth Taylor. He might be swayed if he watched Sara perform it!!

  • her version of this song is so haunting! I love it.

  • her version of this song is so haunting! I love it.

  • Saw the broadway production yesterday. Sara totally own Leigh Ann Larkin.

  • I would have liked her to slow down the faster part just a liiiiittle bit, but besides that, she's an AMAZING Petra!

  • @carriewhite410 agreed - though still impressed by the lack of breathing haha

  • Can I pull an Ursela move and steal her voice? Please?

  • I like this, but I don't love it. There's no denying that Sara's voice is incredible, but I don't like the way she handles the fast sections; she sounds more angry than excited, and her tone is really heavy. The verses are beautiful, though!

  • It is so nice to hear a woman with her voice sing this song, it is so different compared to the Leigh Ann Larkin type voices, not to say she isnt great, cuz she was

  • Luscious and riveting! I love her!

  • Wow she is amazing!!!!

  • Talentosisima, su voz y sus actuaciones son maravillosas, ella es mi inspiración.

  • One can quibble with some of the stylistic choices, but it is a pleasure to hear this song performed by a woman with a big enough voice to own the song. As often as not, this song gets the best of its singer. That did not happen here. Her sound is gorgeous.

  • @Lalitalien1 Sonheim can be VERY poppy. Have you not heard Rachel York's version of this or even Susan Terry's version, and don't even mention the version from "An Evening with Sondheim" totally rockin' out and groovy. I'm sorry, I think Sara KILLED this, I loved it.

  • @Kenya101 Sondheim can be poppy, absolutely. But scooping and sliding between every note show lack of technique and gets old after 1 verse.

  • @Lalitalien1 @Kenya101 I have no idea what your definitions of pop are, but Sondheim does not write pop music, certainly not in this show. One could do a pop-styled cover, but it still doesn't make it a pop song. Sondheim doesn't stylize his songs to be hits infused with a rock-inspired sound, which is what pop music is. There are songs in Company that were orchestrated to have a familiar 70s feel - that's as pop as you're going to get from Sondheim.

  • @Kenya101 sondheim is not poppy, sondheim is sophisticated, sondheim is at the top when it comes to musical theater and requires experienced and highly trained singers

  • @GreenGoddessofGaia Why do you assume that pop music can't be sophisticated? Try transcribing a Janet Jackson song, and then come talk to me about sophisticated.

  • @Lalitalien1 Liz Calloway. That's who sings it on A Stephen Sondheim Evening.

  • sounds phenomenal for the most part. I just think she moves around just a SMIGE too much and it makes her breating a little crazy at parts.

  • how great is sara?!

just perfect. amazing voice. gorgeous lady.

  • She makes it look so effortless!

  • Perfect!!!

  • I love Sara's voice! and she has the funniest facial expressions. but I think she looks so much better with dark/black hair

  • what a beautiful, rich, and powerful voice Ms. Ramirez has... I think she played this role perfectly, and it's one of the best renditions of this song I've heard!

  • meow!

  • This was 2002, also starred Patti Lupone as Desiree, George Hearn as Frederick and Marc Kudisch as Carl-Magnus.

  • I wish it was on DVD.

  • I agree. Vocally perfect. If anyone has disagreement with the direction that's another thing, but Sara's performance is spot on. An absolute dream Petra. I think @die4meandonlyme doesn't get the part at all. Sorry, she must have been awful.

  • so i know i'm a little late on dies4me complaining about this performance but dear god woman are you insane?!?!? there is such a liveliness in sara's performance! she's prob some ingenue that thinks that all sondheim's work should be done completely legit. sara embodies all that this character is...her energy matched with her subtly with her movements are breathtaking...that is all

  • In response to Sara on TV. I agree that she belongs in the theatre and not on crappy network TV, but to be honest it's a good way for her to make a lot of money for four or five years, and then she choose whatever theatre she wants to for years to come!

  • dear god she's incredible!

why is she on grey's? dont get me wrong, she's my favorite character, but it seems like her true love is music and theater, and there's none of that on the show. i guess its something different.

i wish i could see her perform. i'm sure its so much better in person.

  • couldn't agree more, except i don't even like her character in the show that much. doesn't do her justice. she can do much better

  • Because, unfortunately, there's a lot more money to be made on television than on Broadway, particularly when your show's a hit.

  • ABC saw here in Spamalot and offered her a role in any show she wanted. She picked Grey's cause she's a big fan. I wish they let her sing on an episode soon. Her voice is incredible.

  • ..What didn't you like about this performance?

I mean, the character just got done having sex and now she's openly discussing her views on promiscuity. Sara rocks it.

  • oh no! You must not have understood the role :/

  • absolutely gorgeous. both in looks (and especially) in voice. and her acting is amazing. love to see people do sondheim justice. I just wish there were more singers/actors like her on broadway now. go back and show them all up sara!!

  • This role is sooooooo perfect for Sara. She has the perfect look for it and her voice is glorious in this music!

  • I think she and Izzy should do a sing off in Grey's Anatomy...so everyone can know how AMAZING this woman is haha!

  • The whole production was amazing, but Sara's singing was so soothing to my soul. She's radiant!

  • wow, talking about real talent :-))

  • Sara Ramirez Luuuuuuuuuuuuuv u

so much .. and missing u

  • STUNNING.

  • Was Patti LuPone Desiree in this production?

  • I think she might have been. I think George Hearn was also in this production as Frederick. There used to be a video on youtube of LuPone doing "Send in the Clowns". I think it was taken down.

  • WOW! I wish Sara would do more Sondheim -- she's AMAZING! Spamalot was a waste for her talent and voice. I know she's paying the bills with her medical show but this girl has unmatched talent and should be doing serious musical theater.

  • She may be a big TV star now, but this--stage and voice--is her forte and her calling; NOT a TV melodrama soap!!

  • I was there. Front row. I fell in love with her that night. It was called a perfect production. She was a reason why.

  • @tadwinkle you're so lucky to see her so nearly!! I wish I could see her acting front of me. =)

  • Such a powerhouse! I like how she gives Petra a playful sort of persona in this song, it really works. Her and Susan Terry do the best with this song, imo.

  • it was i this year??

    she really sings amazing!

    awesome voice!!!

  • Oy SO AMAZING. I CAN NEVER GET ENOUGH OF THE SARA!!

  • She's so fantastic. I hope she'll do musicals still, now that hollywood has swept her up..she's tremendous

  • I totally love her!!! Her voice is spectacular!!!

  • I heart Sara Ramirez. she's just AMAZING

  • this is easily the most mesmerizing interpretation of this song i have ever seen or heard

  • agreed

  • Agreed!

  • AGREED.

  • Her voice is so mesmerizing here...

  • I love her voice

  • i want her back on broadway! NOW!

  • Phrasing was a little wonky here and there, but dear lord, does this woman have a Voice.

  • You're not lyin! I could listen to her all day long! She's just amazing!

  • wow, she really is amazing!

  • WOOOOOOOW. Wow.

    Rock on, Sara.

  • Probably either the best or second best performance of this song.

  • I agree, honestly i think i might like this better then the original

  • Totes.

  • I agree that Sara's version is good, but if you haven't seen Susan Terry's version...

    Well, youtube it.

  • Susan is very good. I find Sara's more earthy and real though.

  • I can't stop watching this video.. or anything Sara Ramirez. Is there a support group for this?

  • I don't know if there is a support group but if you find it let me know!! On second thought... Don't because I love watching her over and over! Especially when she sings!!

  • Dude if there were I suport group, i'd be the dan group leader! LOL! You should see my room!

  • IDK, but if there is, I'm in :)

  • she is so fantastic!

  • Beautiful, earthy, uninhibited and oh, that amazing voice! Really, a perfect interpretation of a great Sondheim song.

  • she would play this part! haha love itt

  • Sara come back to broadway we miss you :(

How about the album at least :)

  • Agreed! That girl can't keep us waiting foreveer!

  • yes ... she stood out in A Class Act for me - she stole that show!

  • Every time I see Sara I'm more amazed by her! She is beautiful, talented, funny, and did I say beautiful this woman has it all!

  • Doesn't she? :) She just blows me away with that voice!

  • damn, that's all i can say. i've seen many wonderful interpretations of this song (and it is SUCH a wonderful song), but this has to be one of my favorites. very fresh, and new.

  • Two words: facial expressions.

  • Six words: Sara is the master of it ;)

So sorry about the "-1" i acidentally caused on your comment :( I hit the wrong one! : /

(Is it just me or did that sound a little bit nasty? LOL)

  • That's OK :) She IS the master of it!

  • Oooh, someone has taken care of the mess I accidentally created on your comment! And I got a chance to prove that I do know how to spell 'accidentally'. ;)

  • That's always a good thing! Lol :P

  • Sure is ;P :D

  • She never ceases to AMAZE me...

  • Ya she is truly amazing, ummmm I don't really know what year, but it's quite old I would imagine from when she was just starting out.

  • Yeah. She looks blonder, so I would imagine it was a while ago.

  • @bigsararamirezfan I think this is from 2002

  • JESUS! She is SO insanely talented. Man. just wow.

  • Cosign. She's just...wow. There are no words.

  • Holy CRAP. This is what Juiliard does to a person! This is by far, one of the most amazing performances I've seen of her! Just listen to how long the applause lasted!

  • YAY more McSara-awesomeness! :D Thank you so much for posting this. What year might this have been?
