Fact: NPS has strict food protocols at all national parks, mostly because of the amount of foreigners and back country hikers who frequent the parks. These people tend to accidentally act as disease vectors, which can cause a heavily visited park to act like a huge conduit for diseases to spread. It is true you should be able to buy and eat what you want but this is an issue that could affect people who did not chose to eat the apple. Regardless, it's not that big of a deal. Eating an apple without washing it CAN make you sick, but most of the time you won't. I'm positive that the benefits of eating apples outweighs the risks of eating them without washing them.

Lastly, I'm pretty sure the apples given out have already been washed before being shipped.
