If you're looking for a multi-fuel stove with great proven reliability, check out the Optimus Svea 123R. Just bought one and it works great. It's on the heavy side, if you're counting grams, but for hiking or backpacking, it's great.
@12marinecorp I have had the Brunton Flex stove for about 3 years, and those types of cookers are great as long as you have access to the fuel. The Isobutane is more costly, only available in larger towns (relevant if backpacking), and is only efficient above 25*.
There are many options out there and I don't know that any one of them is the best. Alcohol is more efficient at lower temps, but will not go as low as white gas. Unfortunately, white gas stoves are more bulky and higher weight.
Looks like a good cook kit/stove. I recommend that you use a windscreen whenever you use Esbit even with this stove. Any wind at all has a negative effect on Esbit. Also, if you would like to carry more tabs with you just take them out of their blister packs and wrap each tab in foil and throw them in a ziplock.
Esbit cubes are supposed to take 8 minutes to boil water and burn for 13 minutes. also the stove has those holes for oxygen and the wind won't effect it much.
I am interested in the pop can stove boiling water in 3 to 4 minutes I would like to see that
@packrat557 I will be trying to get back to this stove. I am interested in what a couple of folks have mentioned about the alcohol stove being used, sticks, etc. I will work on it. Thanks for the info on the Esbit tabs. They are a new product for me, but I did use them to make coffee with my Crusader water bottle setup, while dove hunting in the field yesterday. They work great!
Hey i dont know has some said it already but the esbit fuel tablets DO light up with knife and firesteel IF you just scrape soem small shavings of the tablet. Those will ignite from firesteels spark, and get the whole fule cube burning easily.
This might help, your meant to light the feul with a match, windsheilds help, and if you want to boil water faster you can add another feul block, hope it helps...
Esbit never claims to boil water in under 8 minutes. It's just not that much BTUs. I, too, would like to put a Trangia in that base and see how it performs.
My big gripe with most alcohol stoves/burners is they're so flimsy and easy to topple over. This looks like it would be a much better base for a little fry pan. I like to actually cook - not just heat water.
firesteel? It works if you put a piece of coton under the tab.... but one thing i dont like... I never put the stove inside my pot after I use the toxic tabs.... 29.99$ too much... anyway 5* from me
I'm curious...I was just on R.E.I. website and very interested in that stove, but only with an alcohol stove. Have you tried it that way yet? If not, could you maybe post a vid on it in the near future...thanks :o)
I have not tried it with an alcohol stove. I have one of the stoves though and will try to remember to check it out, and see if it will fit inside the base.
LOL Faol. The Esbit will light with a Ferro rod, but you have to get a few shavings of the esbit first so it can take a spark. Its extremely hard to light without doing that. They are decent backups or to pack a few tabs for fire starting as you said. I wouldnt rely on it as a primary.
Yes, it was. The $120 handmade knife threw crap for sparks. The inexpensive Mora Clipper showered them. Another reason to not judge a knife by its price.
Esbit is harmful!!! Especially in rooms.
You remember Zyklon B---> holocaust?
prussic acid/ hydrocyanic acid/ hydrogen cyanide and so on.

@HDCYTFAN They are grill lighting matches that you can get at China-Mart, K-mart, Target, or many larger grocery stores.

GREAT VIDEO AND IM SHURE YOU FIGURED THIS OUT THAT ESBIT ONLY LITES TO A EXPOSED FLAME.... GREAT VIDEO I SUBED
LaneMaddox00 1 year ago
Esbit doesn't take a flame easily, you have to hold a flame on it for about ten seconds.

it does not work with flint thats what sucks about it

a very nice stove.........maybe the boil time could be reduced if something was placed under the fuel tab to raise it a little ?

Efficiency can be defined in a number of ways. Weight ratio, boil time ratio, compactness ratio etc... compared to another aspect.
Thanks for showing the video of a new product.

Hey Faol, that stove looks like it could be a great wood stove. Maybe stick some twigs in there. Have you tried that?
ihoppy 2 years ago
No, I haven't tried that yet, but I will be checking that out when I check the alcohol stove use as well. Thanks.

Great, if it works out, make a video!

Nice stove...but I agree, an alcohol stove would be much better in that. I think I'll look into that one. Thanks for that :o)

is the solid fuel holder do hicky removeable? looks like it's held in with a screw
arolfsen 2 years ago
It is just riveted into place. You should be able to just drill it out.
faolbushcraft 2 years ago
I think the problem is that the base has too much height...
Lowering it to 3/4 or 1/2 of that height would probably make a tramendous difference in boil time.

Beast12101 pointed me towards a video he did, where he shaved it off. He also did one on the Esbit as well, but I missed both of those somehow.

You may be right. I had not thought of that. I may try that and report back.
