really good recipe. until i read the comments i wasn't sure that you worked in the food industry but so much of that recipe showed your food knowledge is more than above average so that's what i figured.
and for the record i wasn't offended at all at the use of the term ghetto. maybe where everyone else is from its some massively offensive term. but its just urban slang to me, and that's clearly how you intended to use it.
@brianwurst1234 you're right, bhut jolokia peppers, aka 'ghost peppers' are the hottest around. Fortunately I used the weasel words, 'probably get', leaving room for bhut jolokia peppers. I'm going to have to go to market and find some now. Thanks!
while I'm not discontinuing my ghetto series I will be releasing a concurrent series on the same channel in the new year (2010) that should be completely flat (inoffensive). The recipes will also be more basic. I'll be doing another series as well that is more budget oriented. Thanks for the input.
because many people living in North America have to be offended by words/names/ideas because no one is actually beating them with sticks and stones.
Metaphors aside it's 'offensive' because I'm white and while I am poor, and do live in a poor neighbourhood it's not a ghetto. It's also offensive because people don't realize where the word ghetto came from, or how it's evolved.
Recently a workmate said to me: "It's offensive because lets face it, you're not hip hop"
I didn't realize, please explain more as I'm quite familiar with the history of the the word ghetto. The formal definition is a part or borough of a city, especially one that is more of a slum and/or occupied by minority groups. The word's origins are likely to be Venetian for slag, or alternatively from the Italian borghetto, diminutive of borgo borough. Since then ghettos have come to be occupied by minorities ranging from the Irish to African Americans. Please enlighten me on the offense
So does your "ghetto chili" recipe refer to a food product that is a "a borough of a city, especially one that is more of a slum and/or occupied by minority groups Chili"?!
No. "Ghetto" in your usage refers to something that is variously low-class, poor, lazy, ignorant, and one that only became a term in slang after the image of *black* ghettos. Match this with the oh-so-simple character of your recipes and you're trying to make videos that are for lazy/ignorant people. Get it together son.
I was merely indicating the history of the word ghetto and the formal definition as I thought the offense may have been taken to be culturally specific. Unfortunately I ran out of characters before I could get into the modern parlance. That of course being of reference to or concerning inner city life, poverty, jurry rigged/improvised/homemade. Check it out in the urban dictionary if you don't believe me....
Also in case you were wondering I presently live in the downtown core of a major metropolis. I am also impoverished as I'm a WORKING COOK, I live well below the poverty line and I home make and jury rig everything. You tell me to get it together, but you've been on YouTube since 2006 and you don't even have a video. So think twice before you tell someone to get it together.

You do realize that ghetto is an incredibly offensive term for your "web personality" of a lazy/poor/ignorant cook, right? I mean, really, "ghetto"?!
