Interestingly, it's not the great Tony Pabon singing here but the underrated and superb cantante Alberto Gonzalez who sings this with such sentiment and desire for his Micaela: ''Micaela, the B-side to I Like It Like That, which also was a chart-topper and radio favorite in its day. This one’s a cha cha boogaloo in Spanish, sung by the group’s lead vocalist Alberto González and modeled closely after Joe Cuba’s mega-hit Bang Bang'' - FANIA WEBSITE
the album was released posthumously because Tito Puente died on May 31, 2000. Ironically, Rodriguez also had a heart ailment, but he refused to undergo bypass surgery as Tito Puente did but ultimately died. On December 1, 2000, Pete "El Conde" Rodriguez suffered a heart attack and died at the age of 68.
@fusagasuga13 Sorry to say, but you're mistaken. Pete "El Conde" Rodriguez is NOT singing in this group. That's ANOTHER Pete Rodriguez - and he's still very much alive. Many people make the same mistake in confusing both performers due to them having the same exact names. Pete Rodriguez singing THIS song was raised in the Bronx of P.R. parents. Pete Rodr. & Tony Pabon, both raised in the Bronx, created this band. Pete 'El Conde" Rodriguez is completely a different performer.
Pete "El Conde" Rodriguez only recorded two albums in the 1990s with one of his hit songs "Esos Tus Ojos Negros" being released in 1993. By 2000, he was hired by Tito Puente to provide lead vocals for a tribute to the late bolero singer Benny Moré.
Just a year later in 1964, Pacheco and his lawyer Jerry Masucci founded The Fania All-Stars, a combination of the best Latin singers and musicians at that time. Pete's first album under the Fania label was Canonazo. Between 1964 and 1973, Rodriguez and Pacheco recorded seven albums including La Perfecta Combinacion (1970), Los Compadres (1971), and Tres De Cafe Y Dos De Azucar (1973).
Pete "El Conde" Rodriguez was a percussionist who started playing bongos at the age of five. After working with local groups in Ponce, Puerto Rico, he moved to The Bronx during the 1950s. While singing and playing the congas in a Bronx bar, he was spotted by legendary bandleader Johnny Pacheco. His first album was titled Suavito, which was released in 1963.
Pedro Juan Rodriguez Ferrer (January 31, 1932 – December 2, 2000), better known as Pete "El Conde" Rodriguez was a salsa singer born in Ponce, Puerto Rico. His son, also named Pete Rodriguez, is also a salsa and jazz musician.[1]
VERY LITTLE BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION EXISTS REGARDING THE BUGALU KING, PETE RODRIGUEZ. EVEN BASIC THINGS LIKE DATE OF BIRTH, EARLY LIFE, AND WHAT HE DID AFTER THE BUGALU PERIOD ENDED (I THINK HE DID A FANIA ALBUM BUT WHAT ABOUT AFTERWARDS? AND MOST IMPORTANTLY: WHAT HAPPENED TO THIS GREAT MAN?? THERE ARE OVER 200,000 VIEWS AS OF THIS WRITING. IT'S OBVIOUS THAT PETE RODRIGUEZ IS A MAJOR FORCE IN LATIN MUSIC ***STILL***. PLEASE ADD ANY BIO INFO YOU MAY HAVE!
No se como hay tanto imbécil para la música que no le gusta un tema como este, así no le guste el boogaloo, deben apreciar la buena música.. ignorantes!!
@allbuttssoldout I'm From Barranquilla Colombia and we like this Newyork Rican original version .That original 33 1/3 RPM. (REVOLUTION PER MINUTES) Son people from Cali did not have on that times this kind of LP players so they had no other choice than to play it on 78 rpm. That way they like faster. This is the real Latin boogaloo and Pete Was the King!
it's very good this son, o sea en castellanito esta cancion a causado furor mmmm y quien no se acuerda de ella en CUPIDO CARTAS DE AMOR CON BUENA LETRA...JAJAJAJAJAJAJAJA ES LO MEJOR LOS RECUERDOS HERMOSOS QUE NOS TRAE
Having reached my sixth decade I remember those days when I was 15, when this music set trends, with unusual swing, and forty five years later still unsurpassed.
People did not dance salsa to boogalu in the 60s! Why? Salsa as a name for a type of music (yes no such thing they just squashed a thousand different styles in there and called it salsa), salsa as a dance style, and salsa as a culture DID NOT EXIST YET.Yes Fania kingpins Johnny Pacheco and Jerry Masucci had already started the label by '64 but it didn't take off til the late 60s. In the mid-60s Boogalu was KING. So what was boogalu dance like? Well it was Latinized version of 60s black r&b dance
As others have already noted, THIS SHOULD *NOT* BE TAGGED "PETE EL CONDE", TOTALLY DIFFERENT PERSON!! This is the Bronx Boricua of boogaloo fame, Pete Rodriguez who is NOT the same person as the great native Puerto Rican sonero Pete El Conde Rodriguez. Boogaloo Pete was Nuyorican from the Bronx. Pete El Conde was from Ponce. Both were superb artists BUT THEY ARE TWO DIFFERENT PEOPLE. Okay? Resume dancing...Ay mira micaela
@GUALLACOL How could they be compared? Nuorican Pete was not a sonero, Ponceno Pete was not a pianist. As for songwriting: I can't compare the two. Comparing boogaloo to salsa dura would be like having to compare maybe something like jibaro music to bomba. They are complete worlds unto themselves. Now, having said that I cannot compare Petes, I can tell you that they are my musical santos. Life would be a mistake without their music (and of course Maelo and Cheo but that's a different story).
@GUALLACOL I know nothing. My many great Puerto Rican teachers who taught me history culture and music, everything that is great in living life are the masters. THEY boogalu on the cosmic highway of eternity, I just am a student. But thanks. I think.
Friend, please do the research. Beny More fled to Mexico b/c Cubans wouldn't allow him to perform before the racist lilly white Cuban society. Look it up. More lived in Mexico 4 15yrs, where he also felt the racism. Cubans hate to admit that PR's, & other Lat. Amr. musicians are just as good, in some cases, better.
La Lupe/ Celia Cruz owed their success to whom? Right, Tito Puente/Tite Curet (both P.R.). Many Cubans are talented musicians, but PR.'s have proven time again, they 2 r talented!
@LabanTall The Piano does NOT make this music. It's actually the tambourine, the claps, and the shouts that distinguishes as Boogaloo. The rhythm though is Cuban and it's called Son Montuno If you like this chances are you will also like "Castellano Que Bueno Baila Usted" by Benny More.
You seem to be unbiased. Let me know what you think after you hear the song I recommended.
Yeah, actually the piano DOES make this music.Mambo which dominated the late 40s,50s,and early 60s was very bass heavy, brass heavy, percussion heavy, right? Cachao, Puente, etc..right? I agree the hand claps and shouts are a distinctive aspect of boogaloo but it's the placement of the piano front and center as both the rhythmic anchor and the melodic lead instrument that differentiates boogalu from mambo and connects it directly with salsa, where we get Richie Ray, Papo Lucca, etc
@jdmaccord9396 I won't refute what you just said. However, I will add that I have heard songs that change from son montuno to boogaloo by just adding plamadas and tambourine
@Tropicoco123 You know that's very interesting I never thought about that. It would be kind of like changing the clave, BUT using, like you said plamadas (handclaps) and tamourine. I'll definitely have to listen for that, as I go through my AfroCaribbean music collection this weekend. I'm not a professional/trained musician but I try to listen to music with a musician's "ear" as best as my limited musical abilities allow. I appreciate that insight. Many Thanks.¡QUE VIVA LA MUSICA!
WHATEVER YOU SAID,?????? ANYBODY KNOWS THIS IS SIMPLE AND PURE CUBAN MUSIC-THAT IN NEW YORK THEY GIVE DIFFERENT NAME TO THE CUBAN MUSIC SO THEY COULD SELL IT AROUND THE WORLD!!!!!! LOOK IT UP!! AND LEARN!!!! everybody COPYING THE CUBAN MUSIC - THE ORIGINAL AND THE ONE
@RomancesyBoleros CUBAN RYTHEM? LOL, PLEASE DON'T MAKE ME LAUGH.SO NOW, IT WAS CUBANS PASSING THEMSELVES AS PUERTORICANS IN THE 60'S THAT CREATED, IN NYC, THE BOOGALOO AND MADE IT TO THE TOP OF THE CHARTS? LOL, PLEASE, I'M PISSIN IN MY PANTS, YOU ARE REALY FUNNY, AND IGNORANT, AND AN IDIOT. AS FAR AS I KNOW, CAUSE I WAS HERE IN THE 60'S WHEN THE PUERTORICAN SALSA, BOOGALOO EXPLOSION STARTED. THERE WERE NO CUBANS INVOLVED. PLEASE, STOP THIS NONESENSE. "EL SON" WAS CUBA'S RYTHEN, NOT SALSA, LOL
@HerecomesLori JAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJJ BITCH SEARCH ON WIKI CUBA HAS CREATED MORE THAN 70 RYTHEM......GUAGUANCO-GUARACHA-SON-TROVA-SON MONTUNO-BOLERO-CHARANCHA-PREGON-CHANGUI-TIMBA-ETCCCCCC CUBA IS THE HOMENLAND OF THE LATIN MUSIC''''''' LATIN JAZZ ALSO CREADED IN CUBA,,ETCCCCC PR ALWAYS HAVE BEEN USA PROPERTY,THAT IS WHY THEY TALK SHIT AFTER SHIT!!!!AND GET AWAY WITH IT!!

@allbuttssoldout LOL, YOUR NICK SAYS IT ALL. LOL. IN SPANISH, IT MEANS, "TODO CULO A LA VENTA" ALL ASSHOLE FOR SALE", LOL NOW I'M REALY PISSING IN MY PANTS,LOL WHAT A NICK FOR A BLOG LIKE THIS. ASSHOLES CAN'T TALK, EXCEPT YOURS, LOL
THIS IS WAS ONE OF THE ERA OF THE FAMOUS "FANIA ALL STARS" FROM THE 60'S.ALL OF THEM NEWYORICANS. PETE "EL CONDE"RODRIGUEZ WAS ONE OF THEM. NO MATTER WHAT OTHER PEOPLE THAT WERE NOT IN NYC IN THAT ERA, WANT TO IMPLY THAT IT CAME FROM CUBA, BUT THAT IS TOTALLY WRONG. THE PUERTO RICANS CREATED THIS RYTHEM AND MADE IT WORLD WIDE FAMOUS. THEY SANG IN ENGLISH AND IN SPANISH, CAUSE THEY WERE RAISED IN NYC. CUBA DANCED TO GUAGUANCO, RUMBA AND MAMBO, NOT BOOGALOO NOR SALSA. THEY CAME LATER, WAY AFTER..
@HerecomesLIE NOT TRUE GO TO GOOGLE ANS SEARCH THE HISTORY OF "SALSA" AND THEN TALK!!!!!!!!! CUBA INVENTED "SALSA" IS JUST SON -CUBAN MUSIC SIMPLE AND PURE!!!!!!! CUBA INVENTED GUAGUANCO-RUMBA,MAMBO,GUARACHA,BOOGALOO,SALSA,TIMBA,SON,TROVA,BOLERO,FEELING,PACHANGA,CHANGUI,GUAJIRA,CONGA,DANZONETE,LATIN JAZZ,CLAVE,COMPARSA,ZAPATEO,PUNTO GUAJIRO,CRIOLLA,CANCION,BUFO,TONADILLA,ZARZUELA,ETCCC

@HerecomesLori Cubans dances and screamed Salsa long before any Puerto Rican did. Little bit of info for you: the first Latin track to arrive to New York was called "El Manicero". Sonora Marancera Benny More Conjunto Casino Jose Curbelo Chico O'Farrill Miguelito Valdez Roberto Faz ARSENIO RODRIGUEZ. Look them up you'll gte the original tracks of thos so called "Salsa" songs
@Tropicoco123 Back in the 30's/40's, in NYC, the big band leaders may have been Cuban, but who were the majority of the musicians playing in the band? Puerto Ricans!! You need to read up on the music history yourself. Stop using 1959 as an excuse why Cuba stop "exporting" their talent. Cubans/P.R. both groups were here at the same time since the 1860's. You have to admit. Puerto Rican musicians added a serious kick to what Cubans call "el son". P.R. gave the music some serious edge!! Jus sayin
@allbuttssoldout Back in the 30's/40's, in Havana, the big band leaders and musicians where most, if not all, Cuban. They all were able to travel to NY, Mexico, Europe and come back to Cuba anytime they wanted. That ended in 1959 closing the market for them. The market was opened up again in 1990, the time wish marks the beginning of the Timba boom. So for 30 years Cuban music evolved and nobody knew about it; only when the market was temporarily opened by Jimmy Carter and Irakere was (cont)
@Tropicoco123 and Irakere was able to show the world how far Cuban musician had evolved their music. Everybody knows that PR's have added some kick to what Cubans call Son, but Cubans have done so too, and everybody else that has played the music. And sorry but Fania All Stars, Johnny Pacheco, Pete El Conde was all Cuban music. As a matter of fact most bands of the 60's played boogaloo (Guajira con Soul) and guaguanco son; where's the folkloric music of Puerto Rico in those generas? Nowehere.

@RomancesyBoleros JAJJAJAA NO ME DIGAS...JAJJAJA OYE,PERO DE DONDE TU SACASTES ESO.JJAJAJAJAJA LA SALSA Y EL BOOGALOO NACIO EN NEW YORK EN LOS ANOS 60'S...YO BAILE CON TODOS LOS GRANDES DE ESTE GENERO, Y HASTA LOS AMERICANOS BAILARON ESTE RITMO QUE LOS BORICUAS HICIERON FAMOSOS EN NEW YORK Y EL RESTO DEL MUNDO...NECESITAS UNAS CLASESITAS DE MUSICA,, PORQUE ESTAS MAL INFORMADO...JAJAJAJA PUERTORICAN POWER, BABYYYYYY...WEPAAAAAAA
@HerecomesLori PORFAVOR TU ME VAS A DECIR ESO A MI DICELO A OTRO TONTO,"DE LO QUE TU LLAMAS "SALSA" VIEN DEL SON Y NADA MAS IGUAL QUE DEL MAMBO,GUAGUANCO,RUMBA, TODOS RITMOS CUBANOS , NUEVA YORK NO INVENTO NADA,LO QUE LES DIJERON ESE CUENTO PARA PODER VENDER LA MUSICA CUBANA Y PODER VIVIR DE ESO TODA LA VIDA!!! PORFAVOR ESTUDIA MAS LA MUSICA CUBANA!!!!!! MIJO SIN CUBA NO HAY NADA DE BAILE,SI NADIE LO HACE COMO LO HACE CUBA!!!! OK
@RomancesyBoleros PUES NO SOLO TE LO DIGO, SINO QUE TE LO ASEGURO, MIJITO.UDS. EN CUBA, SOLAMENTE HAN CONOCIDO, LOS RITMOS DEL HUAHUANCO, MAMBO, RUMBA...UDS VINIERON A CONOCER LA SALSA Y EL BOOGALOO MUCHO DESPUES DE HABER SIDO CREADA Y HECHA FAMOSA EN EL MUNDO ENTERO Y EN NUEVA YORK POR PETE RODRIGUEZ, WILLIE COLON, JOE CUBA, TITO PUENTE, TITO RODRIGUEZ, HECTOR LA VOE Y MUCHOS OTROS BORICUAS.LA EPOCA DE LOS 60'S ELLOS AQUI LA LLEVARON A LA FAMA Y SE CREO EL NUEVO RITMO LLAMADO BOOGALOO Y SALSA
@Slysgame BABY, I KNOW THAT. RUBEN BLADES WAS THE ONLY NON PUERTORICAN DURING THE BOOGALOO TAKEOVER OF THE CHARTS IN NYC IN THE 60'S.RUBEN BROUGHT HIS OWN LATIN FLAVOR TO THIS RYTHEM, CREATED IN NYC, AND THAT NOW,LOL, SOME CUBAN'S ARE TRYING TO CLAIMS AS THEIRS, LOL, WHAT A JOKE, LOL, CUBA DID NOT EVEN KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS TRYTHEM, UNTIL THEY CAME FROM THEIR ISLAND IN BARGES.THEY SPOKE NO ENGLISH, AND THEIR RYTHEM WAS RUMBA, SON MONTUNO, NOT SALSA, NOT BOOGALOO. MAYBE FIDEL WROTE IT?LOL
@HerecomesLori You are talking out of your ass man. Mongo Santamaria, La Lupe both Cuban musicians who interpreted bogaloo in the 60's.
Cuba didn't know anything about that rhythm?? Have you ever heard Castellano Que Bueno Baila USted by Benny More. If you don hear the huge similarity in the piano and rythm you're definitely deaf.
Informate.
@Tropicoco123 Cubans NEED to stop accusing P.R.s of having "stealing" their music. When Chuck Berry, Fats Dominoe, Buddy Holly first came, they were considered to be the "founding fathers" of rock music, then Elvis he got pushed aside by the Beatles/Stones, so on. Music, like art - it evolves! La Lupe credited her success to who? Tito Puente, Tite Curet both P.R.; Beny More fled Cuba for Mexico b/c white Cubans looked down on him. Cubans only look at history when it's convenient to them!
@allbuttssoldout BennyMore sang with Mariano Merceron and Bebo Valdez while he lived in Cuba. He went to Mexico because he had an opportunity to work with Perez Prado there. But his fame seriously grew when he went back to Cuba directing his own big band. What does Beny More going to Mexico has to do with what we're talking about? The Puerto Rican musician Rafael Hernandez lived in Cuba for 5 years becuse the opportunity to direct a philharmonic there was presented to him?
PORFAVOR TIENEN QUE DARLE GRACIAS A CUBA--- ESTOS MUSICOS QUE LA MAYORIA AN IDO A CUBA-COMO ROBERTO ROENA-PETE EL CONDE-GILBERTO SANTO ROSA,ETCCCC TITO PUENTO HASTA ESTUDIO MUSICA EN CUBA-PETE EL CONDE DIJO QUE CUBA SIEMPRE A TENIDO SONEROS!!!!! @topogalactico aaah No! This is Pete Rodriguez, Tony Pabon is the lead singer. This song was originally done in 1967 waaaaaaaaaaay before Sonora Carruseles. Though the band was formed in NYC, the musicians were from Pureto Rico!!!
@allbuttssoldout YOU ARE CORRECT.THIS BAND WAS FORMED IN NYC AND ALL THE MUSICIANS WERE PUERTORICANS..ONE OF THE GREAT BANDS OF THAT ERA PETE "ELCONDE" RODRIGUEZ, AMONG MANY OTHERS, HERE IN NYC MADE FAMOUS THE BOOGALOO, A MIX OF LINDY AND SALSA.THEY GOT TO THE TOP OF THE AMERICAN HIT PARADE IN THE 60'S. AMONG OTHER WERE TITO RODRIGUEZ, TITO PUENTE, JOE CUBA, WILLIE COLON, HECTOR LA VOE, RUBEN BLADES, & MANY OTHERS, MOST OF THEM FROM PUERTO RICO AND RAICED IN NYC, EXCEPT RUBEN BLADES VENEZUELAN.
@MachuPicchuTours Obviously 1) you're NOT Puerto Rican, 2) you don't know much about music 3) Every P.R. on the planet knows that this is Pete Rodriguez. JUST SAYIN

@fusagasuga13 Sorry to say, but you're mistaken. Pete "El Conde" Rodriguez is NOT singing in this group. That's ANOTHER Pete Rodriguez - and he's still very much alive. Well it was Latinized version of 60s black r&b dance
jdmaccord9396 9 months ago
Como baila bugalu!! (insert wolf whistle here)
jdmaccord9396 9 months ago
@jdmaccord9396 So are you saying that Pete from NY is better than Pete from the Island?
GUALLACOL 9 months ago
@GUALLACOL How could they be compared? Nuorican Pete was not a sonero, Ponceno Pete was not a pianist. As for songwriting: I can't compare the two. Comparing boogaloo to salsa dura would be like having to compare maybe something like jibaro music to bomba. They are complete worlds unto themselves. Now, having said that I cannot compare Petes, I can tell you that they are my musical santos. Life would be a mistake without their music (and of course Maelo and Cheo but that's a different story).

I do love this - I discovered it after I found his boogaloo music - disputing Pete Terrace for 'El Rey del Boogaloo'.
It's the piano that makes this music.
Can anyone suggest more tracks like this ?
LabanTall 1 year ago
@LabanTall The Piano does NOT make this music. It's actually the tambourine, the claps, and the shouts that distinguishes as Boogaloo. The rhythm though is Cuban and it's called Son Montuno If you like this chances are you will also like "Castellano Que Bueno Baila Usted" by Benny More.
You seem to be unbiased. Let me know what you think after you hear the song I recommended.
Tropicoco123 1 year ago
@Tropicoco123 - very nice. There is a full version on Youtube - search for "Dance as if EVERYONE is Watching!"
LabanTall 1 year ago
@Tropicoco123
Yeah, actually the piano DOES make this music.Mambo which dominated the late 40s,50s,and early 60s was very bass heavy, brass heavy, percussion heavy, right? Cachao, Puente, etc..right? I agree the hand claps and shouts are a distinctive aspect of boogaloo but it's the placement of the piano front and center as both the rhythmic anchor and the melodic lead instrument that differentiates boogalu from mambo and connects it directly with salsa, where we get Richie Ray, Papo Lucca, etc
jdmaccord9396 9 months ago
@jdmaccord9396 I won't refute what you just said. However, I will add that I have heard songs that change from son montuno to boogaloo by just adding plamadas and tambourine
Tropicoco123 9 months ago
@Tropicoco123 You know that's very interesting I never thought about that. It would be kind of like changing the clave, BUT using, like you said plamadas (handclaps) and tamourine. I'll definitely have to listen for that, as I go through my AfroCaribbean music collection this weekend. I'm not a professional/trained musician but I try to listen to music with a musician's "ear" as best as my limited musical abilities allow. I appreciate that insight. Many Thanks.¡QUE VIVA LA MUSICA!

Tropicoco123 1 year ago
@Tropicoco123 Back in the 30's/40's, in NYC, the big band leaders may have been Cuban, but who were the majority of the musicians playing in the band? Puerto Ricans!! You need to read up on the music history yourself. Stop using 1959 as an excuse why Cuba stop "exporting" their talent. Cubans/P.R. both groups were here at the same time since the 1860's. You have to admit. Puerto Rican musicians added a serious kick to what Cubans call "el son". P.R. gave the music some serious edge!! Jus sayin
allbuttssoldout 1 year ago
@allbuttssoldout Back in the 30's/40's, in Havana, the big band leaders and musicians where most, if not all, Cuban. They all were able to travel to NY, Mexico, Europe and come back to Cuba anytime they wanted. That ended in 1959 closing the market for them. The market was opened up again in 1990, the time wish marks the beginning of the Timba boom. So for 30 years Cuban music evolved and nobody knew about it; only when the market was temporarily opened by Jimmy Carter and Irakere was (cont)
Tropicoco123 1 year ago
@Tropicoco123 and Irakere was able to show the world how far Cuban musician had evolved their music. Everybody knows that PR's have added some kick to what Cubans call Son, but Cubans have done so too, and everybody else that has played the music. And sorry but Fania All Stars, Johnny Pacheco, Pete El Conde was all Cuban music. As a matter of fact most bands of the 60's played boogaloo (Guajira con Soul) and guaguanco son; where's the folkloric music of Puerto Rico in those generas? Nowehere.

Cubans only look at history when it's convenient to them!
allbuttssoldout 1 year ago
@allbuttssoldout BennyMore sang with Mariano Merceron and Bebo Valdez while he lived in Cuba. He went to Mexico because he had an opportunity to work with Perez Prado there. But his fame seriously grew when he went back to Cuba directing his own big band. What does Beny More going to Mexico has to do with what we're talking about? The Puerto Rican musician Rafael Hernandez lived in Cuba for 5 years becuse the opportunity to direct a philharmonic there was presented to him?
