@backinthecrystal Amen. If he was "then assassinated" that would mean he was dead from the shooting. "Assassinate" means "to kill a public figure" not "to try to kill."
This video has been edited at the 4:26 mark. Chancellor goes on to refer to a planned dinner meeting between Neil Bush and Scott Hinckley, John's brother. It has been edited from virtually every copy of this particular newscast.
I love the special report intro, with the NBC voice. Whenever you saw that intro and hear the voice say 'special report'... you knew something big is happening. Nowdays, breaking news is in virtually every news segment. Watered down man.
"Nowdays, breaking news is in virtually every news segment. Watered down man." I know exactly what you mean. Everything is BREAKING news. What a joke!!!!!!
I was one block from the GWU Hospital when the shooting took place. I loaded up the camera in my backpack, photographed Nancy Reagan's limo racing to the hospital, and then free-lance covered the unfolding story. Still have that box of slides...
Back when the term "special report" actually meant something. For that matter, if the term "breaking news" came up it was something important, not just something they leave on the screen all the time to make everyday news look interesting.
Only wish Hinckley had been a better shot. Reagan is the most overrated, useless puppet of a President in American history. Thanks to him, countless efforts of blacks to gain their civil rights were undercut. Thanks to him, the age of politics, which put rhetoric over actual governance kicked into high gear. Thanks to him, it became acceptable for a bumbling, idiotic, simpleton of a man like George W. Bush to get elected President. The scope of this man's 'achievements' is wildly overblown.
@cbaldwinjr LOL Well you say because of Reagan morons & idiots can be president well i guess your Chairman Oba Mao proves you correct since even a pile of &#$ has more brains then Oba mao does. Colin Powell would be a great president for any party so don't sit accusing me of being party or race based at least Reagan actually stimulated & turned around a bad economy unlike Oba Mao. Name one thing Chairman Oba mao's done that's benefited anyone let alone in a good way. 775 days left til he's out
Who said I was a fan of Obama. Amazing, your response only FURTHER proves my point. What does Obama have to do with anything, you bigot? Reagan did no such thing. That has been proven time and time again. If anything, he made the country WORSE for the majority of the country (i.e. the non-rich). And don't get me started on all of the civil rights damage that jelly bean eating idiot did. To turn it into race only FURTHER shows what I said in my OP. Thanks for the validation jackass
@hilarioph Assassination attempt occured on March 30, 1981...CBS News and Dan rather held a moment of silence for the "late James Brady" who was pronounced dead by the media.
The Secret Service Agent (inthe gray suit) is one brave guy to willingly take a bullet for our President. The black guy, who is also an agent immediately took control to give immediate orders to the other agents to get the President out of there, all the while alert with gun drawn, & then hustled Hinckley to police squad car for the arrest. Too bad nobody shot Hinckley to save taxpayer's the expense of a jail term.
@altfactor Some local stations used their own card. If you take the NBC tour in Burbank they mention they (NBC) had to change their logo because it was too much like one of their affiliates.
hey marckymarc... true enough... though not sure it was a case of the "media" hiding it.. more like doctors and the white house kept a lid on it... so not to cause a panic. if anything.. media ran with what they were told.. and didn't press it.
Agreed. You can only say it, or show live camera shots of the scene, or the person's house, or have people comment on it, for so long before it's just unnecessary.

You can see there is NO way Reagan could be hit by an explosive bullet that richochs between the door and the car. A friend of the Bush family shoots the president. Google it.
His condition was very serious, not "good"--he lost half the blood in his body, had a high fever and in the following few days he almost died of infection. The news media kept all that from the American people.
Here, here buddy! Here is what the media also left out...
Losing half the blood in his body - finding a donor to match Reagan's blood type.
High fever - nothing a simple NyQuil or other over-the-counter meds won't fix.
Infection - don't know what that cure would be, but it would be something.
If I reported that big story that day, I would not only mention the symptoms from being shot, but I would also report the cures. So once Reagan is cured, he'll be back on his feet.
The world would be a much better place if the shooter knew how to use a gun.

Just have to wonder if the Secret Service did more when Hinckley went after Carter in Nashville in 1980, this wouldn't have happened.

I was surprised NBC was still using this particular "Special Report" open in 1981.
I had thought that portion with the red and blue the "N" logo had been replaced with the "Proud N" (the peacock superimposed over the "N".

At the time 24 hour news (CNN) was just getting started, so we still had the "big 3"
for our news coverage.
The White House was cautious, too, not to give too much info, when not much was known.
