i wanted to do my under grad in the US and get some job,any job,if i was born in america i would have saved some money and become a travel writer and would've been a back packer, however in india(im from india)if you are not a skilled worker you live in the slums,i didnt have the money to afford college in america so i chose an integrated law degree so that i just have to spend one year studying in america, and get a good job there, until i become a citizen and then persue my real dream TRAVELLING
The lawyer complaining should sue the employer for gender discrimination. The employer called you a "bitch." Do you really want to work in a profession that is hated so much that one of the greatest writers (Shakespeare) said "kill all the lawyers?" Shakespeare's works are taught and applauded at most public schools. Most lawyers are Arsholes because they hate themselves and want to take it out on other people.
I know lots of lawyers. Most regret becoming one and all have huge debt that only a lawyers salary can pay. Don't be a lawyer, be an engineer. Most 4 year engineers earn about the same as lawyer and don't work 60 hr a week.
@bellbm55 60 hr a week? Try 80. Routinely. I fucking hate it. I think my area (trade law) is known even in the law world as having almost unbearable hours.
@BlackLabelSlushie - If you don't bill enough, you are out. If you want to be a star, you gotta bill like crazy, which translates to 10-12 hour workdays at minimum plus weekends. Then you might get a bonus at Christmas after killing yourself all year. Not for me, thanks.
@bellbm55 - Heck, any white collar job will do, as long as you work at it. My buddies who went to the Big 5 firms after college are not doing any worse than me, and they don't have the stupid debt... and they all bought houses before me because they were earning money before me.
I work at a law firm with a girl who just graduated law school with almost $200,000 in student loans. I think I'll skip out on law school. My dad is a lawyer and he's just miserable all of the time. Too much stress. You can't leave work at work. :( I see lawyers all the time and they just look miserable.
@anh757 - Stats bear it out. 50% of licensed lawyers in CA don't practice. The 50% of lawyers who are in active practice, half are drinking or using drugs. That's why there is mandatory substance abuse training required by the State Bar for us.
I was told if you are a dedicated worker who does the very best, then you will succeed in attaining The American Dream. Most firms I interview for will not even give me a chance to demonstrate my skills and tell me "don't call us, we'll call you." The American Dream has turned into a nightmare and now with over $114,000 in student loan debt at 10.4% APR, I asked if my loans can be "deferred." I am now working at a call-center. People yell at me on the phone. All I wanted to do was shepardize
@legalman1980 That's awful -- $114,000 and no one will even give you a chance. I hope people read your post BEFORE shelling out and going to law school. Thanks for posting.
@GollaGandaLova You can learn more on your own, than a "public" education gives on the pleadings and procedures of law, which are not law. They are the "actions" on how to behave in court. People can learn more about law, in their spare time than most attorneys at law learn over their entire pre/post collegiate courses in law.
When you are done, you are much better off, knowing law, and not procedure, and not 1/4 mil in debt to boot. Besides Lawyers are Professional liars.
@legalman1980 - I know the feeling well. I didn't take out the full ride so I didn't have the big debt, but it was still enough to suck. I suffered for 3 years as a lawyer, being miserable and hating life every waking moment. Then I decided to do what I love and I don't regret it one bit not being a lawyer.
The only good thing about being a lawyer is that people do tend to give you some space because they don't want to mess with you too much because they don't want to fight a lawyer.
I have an undergraduate degree in pre-law and, during that time, the teachers told us to learn how to "shepardize, shepardize, shepardize." I started to shepardize in doing legal research and liked it until I went for an interview with lawyers who lauged in my face and said "nobody shepardizes anymore!"
Then I went to law school for 3 years, A Tier 3 School all the way!! I got my motivation and inspiration by watching "The Paper Chase" over and over on dvd. I graduated "with honors" w/ no job
@bespo23 I think it's fair to say that most people hate it. Not all, but most. And the problem is that it's not the sort of job that you can just switch off from when you leave the office. Jobs at the moment are VERY hard to find owing to cuts.
@bespo23 I'm a 2L studying for finals right now. I took a study break, and typed "law school sucks" into the search bar. This was the first thing that showed up. All I can say is, truly, law school sucks.
The life of a future lawyer = extreme misery. It's so sad to talk to my peers or my elders who have taken this path and are so unhappy. Seventy-five percent of them would not do it over if given the opportunity to go back. What are you to do when being an attorney is all you've ever wanted to do with your life??
@divalizzous One of the worse things is that it's so hard to get out of once you're in. It feels as if you are trapped forever -- especially with the current jobs market.
people do not know how bad law school is. Its not something where u can work hard and push your way through and finish on top like in undergrad. Its a poltical system on how to get chummy with the teachers so they can get u their grades u want, and get on your law reviews. And then it does not end there, u have to get more ass kissing to get law firm job, all to work 90 hrs for 60 k. the only reason im staying is because i want to finish and take the bar. its crap
@redskins2k - My buddy landed a big law firm job paying big bucks... then he did the math and figured out he was making $35/hr. If you don't make partner in 7 years, you are done. They dump you for a cheaper new associate.
Ha. This is very true re life in a law firm. OK, maybe not the bit about the marrow up the ass! But yes, once you're depressed, you can really call yourself a lawyer.

@Believerification There are far easier ways to make decent money than being a lawyer or doctor.
Lawyers and doctors have the potential to make big money, though not all do
(in the coming years, fewer and fewer will, with the glut of lawyers
and depressed salaries for doctors).
You do get societal prestige ffom both careers (especially doctors),
and in the case of doctors, job security, but the price you pay in personal time, schooling, and education is exhorbitant.
