A little generic on the presentation, true. I miss the Pally and the Druid tho -- those were my two first and favorites in LoD. Gotta love the Druid animation as he steps forward too.

lets hope this screen is for beta's sake, phishization said it bluntly yet correctly.. this really resembles free to play MMO character selection screens. i think for a game to be really great it needs to indulge, involve and draw in the player in EVERY aspect. @Vanles25 you know , you press the credits button on the login screen or whatever.. sometimes they have easter eggs in them, usually tells about who made the game , has their names and such. special thanks and all that. damnit i want flashy entertaining ending credits.
@deadvex Yes SC2 had a boring ending credits, twas simple and very basic not unlike what they did in their past games like Warcraft3 it keeps you watching because it's entertaining. Even SC1 credits is better than SC2, not getting my hopes up in D3 ending credits. :P
Though these simple but fun features made the old blizzard games truly awesome.
i cant say that ive seen any of the char selection screens for the earlier diablo games but i was kinda underwhelmed by this, sure hope its just a beta screen
They added portraits and changed the default portraits, but the MENUS remained largely intact. They added a graphical detail here, or changed one there, but the menus themselves did not really change as much as you claim. This is likely to be the near-final character select screen.

Options were added, and some things were changed, but the overall look of the menus were kept the same.
