yes well the xbox and pc versions are nothing alike. the pc version has remained literally unchanged for years. Its a roster update, slight change to how to score goals and several fixes/breaks of the career mode. Year after year, virtually the same game is released and the menus get harder and harder to navigate.

I'm not completely sure but I think I heard somewhere that it would be all new in 2009, i.e. the next game. And come on, how many years can they use the NHL 06 engine? But I guess if they've been able to use it for three years it's not impossible that they use it once more.

The sad thing though is that in a way I think that out of NHL 06, 07 and 08 with the same engines I think 06 is the best. I don't find the 'skill stick deking' very good in 08. I sort of prefer the skill moves in NHL 06.
