  • This guy Andrew (Andy) Bellwood worked for William Pickton..he was a heroin addict who Pickton took under his wing & Andrew worked for him not realizing what Pickton did until one night Pickton himself told him what he did to hookers..wonder where Andrew is now? Well he looks better now than he did when they found him in the alley on an overdose..came back from the dead...

  • most police are actually cool.

  • yea... ive had shit with em too... they usually suck. Had my assed saved once too. stuck on the 4th floor of a burning building. cops and firemen saved my ass... Ill never forget it. we are all a mix of black and white I suppose. its just hard to admit. Hopefully you will not see their dark side in your face again.

  • human rights prevail.

  • That arm of hers that's open and raw is not the result of picking at it; this woman obviously had a knife at some point and under the influence she cut her arm open to get at the imaginary bugs that were burrowing into her skin. I noticed how she sort of brushed it off when first explaining it; making it sound like it was just a minor thing. just my hunch though, really...

  • It's so nice to see caring police officers :)

  • Wow... what nice fellows, these cops... Here in Tucson, they just beat your ass.

  • @ironicjesus These are a handful of caring police, they are called heartless most of the time. I agree, these guys are compassionate, but I had personal run ins with a few, and they could care less and were very judgmental.

  • My wife have had experiences dealing with cops in the USA and we had no problems at all. There are good and bad everywhere.

  • OMG that arm is horrible. that is some serious picking. good show though.

  • You know what … I stay with a joint or maybe 2 a day. Through good information and personal intelligence I already decided in my teens that I would stay away from the hard stuff, almost 25 years later of ganja smoking I noticed I sticked to my own rule. Better, I guess.

  • Good to see some good cops

  • this kind of thing doesn't happen with cannabis

  • This is pretty typical of cops in the Eastside. They simply cannot arrest everyone for drug related crime. And they begin to get to know everybody down there, and they become like colleagues at work.

  • I saw that rotting arm while eating, i stopped and thought: CHALLENGE ACCEPTED.

  • that arm probably got amputated gees... drugs are fucked up

  • after seeing this my dad and I started working on a film in our area. local kids had a hard time relating to the people in this city being that we came from a smaller town.... same issues just smaller town. Have a look at ours here.

  • safe houses,, needle exchange,, medical treatment - SAVE LIVES - EDUCATE.

    STOP THE DRUG WAR ....

  • The cops in Vancouver seem cool. But then again Canadians are renowned for being really nice people. You should see the cops we have here in the UK.

  • @underboss87 These are cops that are in a show, showing kids what happens when you do serious dope, dont have a stereotype about all us Canadians and cops here to be all nice. Vancouver has a pretty big record (mostly RCMP - Royal Canadian Mounty Police) of being corrupt or mean. Sure, I've met nice cops, and I've known about asshole cops too (never have been arrested for anything). The people here are average, not mean, not bitchy.

  • @WhiteSugarFive

I have friends who live in Canada (originally from the UK) who say that Canadians are very nice people, so I think my points are justified. You say that "people here are average." --- come over to England sometime and I think you will change your opinion very quickly.

  • these cops are way to nice i dont think there real

  • Cops like this make me have more respect for police officers. Sure they could be like the gestapo police in the United States and arrest anyone with so much as a roach. Instead these cops film the heavy toll drug use takes. Clearly, the consequences of drug addiction is punishment enough.

  • @MadTown314 Winner of worst metaphor of the day.

  • Look I am no big fan of the Lower East Side but to be perfectly honest not everyone who is an addict took drugs voluntarily. My cousin went to a house party years ago and someone decided to be mean and slipped him some bad drugs. He has been a vegetable ever since. All I'm saying is that calling these people filth isn't right and saying that they should be shot is even worse. At any time it could happen to any of us.

  • @Fireflythecrippled A lot of Vancouver's home grown street people were former long term patients at Riverside hospital and other mental health facilities. Funding got cut, patients were thrown out on the street after years on psychotropic medications with no way to afford them and started taking everything and anything to "mimic" the effects of the prescription drugs.

    I applaud your compassion.

  • @Fireflythecrippled

Hi! What you wrote about your cousin is very sad....I am so sorry for him.Is he hospitalized? Was the drug(what type was it?) put into his beverage by stealth? How is he at the moment?I do hope that those people who did this with your poor cousin will pay hell for this! Such people deserve the worst....All the best for you and your cousin!

  • "just smokin a bit o' the old heroin eh? move along partner." gosh no wonder we have a problem in that area, these cops are too nice.

  • @sebway23 what else could you do? even if the cop takes it away from him, hes gonna get it again. if thats the only thing that makes him happy let him have it.

  • yeah that girls arm was seriously hard to look at. The fact that she kept shooting in there was even more disturbing

  • How much does it cost for a kin graft nowadays? let alone multiples for each festering wound. If you ever wondered why our health care system is maxed out. The financial cost to everyone is huge from the DTES.

  • thats is one nasty arm! what a filthy fucking animal! they should shoot everyone in the down town east side excution style

  • which part of this movie does the guy on the sidewalk to the freestyle rap??

  • to the top commenter.. i'm a huge opposer of the VPD but i do really like this cop in particular, unfortunately the powers that be are in charge, and noit people like him. maybe larry campbell oughta come back to bc and help us out here, eh?!

  • That cop is hot! But not just that,he looks like very nice person.

  • oh my goodness what was she shooting, plutonium?

  • @tatidel87

All it takes is one heat resistant bactrium in the water that you've cooked your fix with and that's the end result.

People, in desperated, have used their own saliva to cook and ended up with limbs amputated. In the desperation of wanting to "get well" people make some pretty poor decisions, sometimes.

This is why it's imperative to keep safe injection sites, like InSite, open.

  • @lesterclaypool1 yeah, i know a guy that shoot up with water from a creek, that water sometimes stays there for up 2 a month w/out movin, so now hes 27 n has 2 walk w/ a cane...wonder why :S

  • somehow his walk reminds me of robocop ;O

  • Stay off Drugs Kids!

  • damn that shits fuckkkkkkkkkkkd

  • I do not agree with the message that these people just started partying and just happened to have addictive personality and now they are addicted to drugs. It has very little to do with your personality and absolutely everything to do with childhood trauma. 100% of the women who live on the downtown east side have been abused and thats why they have no home, thats why they are drug addicts. Not because they have a personality that lends them self to drugs.

  • @mrpupcake

It's not the reality of most of the indiividuals in this film but it is a good message to give to suburban kids who will never see a foster home or an institutionalized setting other than school.

  • wow, it's amazing to see police actually being sympathetic to the addicts and trying to help them knowing that making an arrest of some guy with a dime of heroin isn't going to do anything except take that cop off the street for a while while they make that arrest and paper work. that cop is smart enough to realize arresting that individual will do nothing for him. i'm sure if it was maybe say someone who would benefit from an arrest he would have made it. like a new user. great video

  • Some people might as well suicide, what's the point of such a thing? You can't call it life

  • why dont they arrest them? around where i live the police arrest you for almost anything. and what do the addicts do during the winter time?

  • @best496

These men are doing their job, they are serving and protecting the members of their community. The young man at the opening of this film would have been dead, Nicola would have went hungry without them.

Some police forget than an arrest should be the last option after you've tried to serve the peson by giving them another option or protected them by getting them the help that they need.

To answer your last question, Vancouver winters are mild so many stay on the streets year round.

  • here u have 2 kinds of cops the nice ones then u have the other kind who just love to beat you to a pulp and they do it in front of everybody no mercy, specially if they have an excuse if ur high or acting stupid they love it, they will fuck you up

  • I agree Police in Canada are so polite. I'm in Alberta, our police officers are so nice :) They got great humor.

  • Wow some people are terrible at doing drugs.

  • fair play to the cop for not taking his gear or at least pushing the situation further. taking their heroin is only going to cause more suffering. its not as if taking the mans gear from him will get him clean, only cause more crime to pay for the fix he lost. in my opinion legalised heroin for people alredy addicted would solve alot of problems. i still dont know what id do about crack and meth which seriously destroy some people???

  • @subdon2k you are so right, in america, the cop would have searched him, hassled him wrote him tickets maybe arrested him. that doesnt help him.

  • my boy hit that strong pack and fell out....haha

  • My best friend lived in Vancouver for a year while attending college. She told me it was bad, but I never fully understood how drug-ridden the downtown eastside really was until now. I'm glad she's home safe now

  • @missmisa drug addicts are inherently violent and bad people. I have known many nurses that have love working in the downtown eastside. I think it's not a good thing that people marginalize and ignore the people that live in the downtown eastside. There are a lot of people with addictions in the DTES but there's also just a lot of people who are very very poor living down there. It's a bad thing that they're concentrated in that area. The lack of safe housing is ridiculous.

  • never seen in my life such good cops , in my country they don't act like human being , they just don't give a damn about your life .

  • Comment removed

  • Kids who have been abused and freak out used to be institutionalized. Wives too. Now it's the downtown east side.

We have to stop the abuse of children, which leads to this. And it goes on and on and on, with little recognition of the real problem. More, but not enough, done about it.

Out of these ranks will come our truth and real change.

    Drugs are just the symptom.

  • @margot980 I agree. I think sometimes we forget that most of the people suffering from addictions living in the DTES have had a long history of trauma; they were not born this way, circumstances in their lives happened. And people with addictions can be helped. It's wrong to think that most people who suffer from an addiction will always be battling that addiction. Addiction is treatable. We can help people learn to live their lives a better way.

  • @SPORESgirl i agree! but ppl who once were addicted do not "heal" their problems it is an ongoing battle for LIFE my wife recently od'd and died from iv drug use! this shit isnt a joke it DOES KILL

  • She explained that she would hallucinate and felt/saw bugs crawling under her skin and would scratch and pick at them. Every time she'd use, she'd cut at her skin and then she would inject heroin into her wounds when she'd use, causing the infection. She said she had two skin graphs but they wouldn't take since she'd inject into her wounds...

  • ya some ppl can do blow for a while then drop it

  • god bless the young people in the downtown eastside....

  • I wish we had cops like this in Australia.

  • Make the Rich Pay

    Join Anti Poverty Committee Coalition...

I have live in Vancouver for 40 years.

most people that has mental-illness ( & addiction ) are not born with mental-illness.

it is the human society that push them over the edge, & turn them into drug addicts...

  • This is WAY more effective than any DARE program lesson!

  • @piggerma I was actually shown this video AT the D.A.R.E Presentation.

  • ya whats he going to do arrest him for having a addiction thats killing him so that he can delude himself into thinking he made a difference?

  • he catches the guy smokin dope and just lets him go?

  • why would they call it Through A Blue Lens ?

  • Man,the police force in Canada,is so diferent from the police here in Brazil...if you compare, they are like educated angels, and the police here, stupid demons...

  • fuck the cops are good but the girls arm is minging man

  • damn that cop is amazing, he catches two different people with drugs and tells them to move along...i wish there were cops like that in los angeles

  • @Tortalone If they made an arrest everytime they caught someone doing heroin in east hastings we would need a jail the size of east hastings!

  • they need to take and lock her crazy ass up for a 72 hr mental evaluation . that arm almost made me throw up. her hand just dangling there, nasty junkie

  • Yes, all this is the result of drug addiction, but what is the cause of drug addiction? Why does somebody try something that she knows is illegal and bad for her? Self-hate.

Call it low self-esteem, self-defeating behaviour, self-destructive behaviour, the root cause is a deep, abiding hatred of self.

And the way to assuage that self-hatred, and prevent self-destructive behaviour is...

    Folks, any ideas?

  • @Fersomling That is definitely the case for some people. My brother got into it to self-medicate for his bipolar illness (which of course just amplified the problem). I would imagine some people who have serious problems at home (abusive parents etc) may start to use it as an escape & throw caution to the wind. However, some people, perfectly normal, tend to 'try it out' in a social gathering, and naively believe they couldn't possibly get hooked after just a little try.

  • My god, get her in in a strait jacket and patted room!

  • when i saw her arm i was like "oh my lord"

  • *vomits on himself* i lived in bc befor but i was told to never go to hasteings , AND JESUS CHRIST HER AR*VOMIT* AHEM ARM

  • im addicted, im addicted to cheez its and cheeze whiz,,, sometimes i spend about 30 min punding cheezits and cheeze wiz, i feel so out of control, since ive come home from iraq ive gained about 30 pounds,,, its taken over my life, help me

  • This documentary must indeed be a great incentive to quit drugs if you doing them.

  • HOLY FUCK her arm!

  • This might sound weird, but being a smoker, i realize that addiction is not something to play around with, and it has always been the thing in the back of my mind when it comes to thinking about drugs like these.

  • @mpwelk what i dont understand about smoking is how can you let a little stick get the better of your will power!!

  • I guess you don't smoke.

  • i used too but gave up the first 6 weeks were tough but i was determined to get the better of the smoke!! and geuss what it worked

  • gosh this is almost painful to watch... these poor people

  • wonder wat happened to her arm =/

  • More kids need to watch this in Jr high.

Thanks for posting this I have been looking for this video, for years.

  • Typical American...A mentality like that explains a lot

  • This is in Vancouver, you goof.

  • I think he is referring to Mahaney82.

  • Im addressing Mahaney82's ignorant comment.

  • My mistake.

  • @TheAnonredpill Thanks for uploading this. I have always been brutalized beaten up, humiliated by cops but these guys are actually trying to make a difference.

We don't have cops like this in the City I'm in in th U.S. That ladies arm,I thought I'd seen everything but my God,what does that?

  • damm that girls arm is rotting...jesus!!!

  • @pzgdr oh god i hate this part

  • @pzgdr i had just started eating a pizza when she pulled it out :|

  • @Marko767 pepperoni?......if you kept it down your a stronger man than I.

  • @pzgdr funny tht u knew it was pepperoni

  • nicest cop ever omfg

  • @novalefe most vancouver cops are really good guys.

  • @novalefe Yea cause in the U.S. they would arrest every one of those people just to fill prison beds.

  • @novalefe i was thinkin the same

  • nicest copS, plural, ever... unbelievably mellow. never seen cops behave like this.

  • @reddirtg Its no secret the lower east side cops have their priorities straight. Imagine if some sheriff's dept. idiot came across that guy smoking the heroin in the alley? He'd be tasered and arrested in 2 seconds Id bet.
