Coming from Vancouver (and not being a Canucks fan), I can tell you that hockey here is more than just a game. This is a way of life for people here. This is specifically why I stopped being a fan of the team. This is a city that had one of the most imfamous sports riots in North American sports history when they lost 1994 game 7. This is a city that even after the Olympics still says that winning 1994 game 6 is the best sports moment in the cities history. It is definately not just a game here.

Being from Buffalo, the culture is that it is more than just a game. It's all the city has. I agree with you that people overreact a lot, but I also sympathize with those who feel sincere disappointment when their team loses. Although interestingly enough, Buffalo fans may curse and swear and possibly break stuff in a drunken rage, but win or lose, they don't have the reaction of other cities. When the Bills lost the Super Bowl, the team was welcomed back with open arms. That's sportsmanship.

My belief why people do this is because its one of the few things that people put their love and devotion into then to be let down at the end makes them sad but instead of sad they get fierce with anyone or anything thing that stands in their way. Almost like a parent when their child lets them down.

I understand where you are coming from, but I disagree just a little bit. I actually don't mind people throwing fits because of loses because it shows that they're passionate about their team. I'm a NY sports fan and live in the NYC area and you don't know how many people I see get pissed off at the little things their sports team do wrong on a daily bases. I think it is quite cool to see how much a sports team can bring out the emotions in people. That's just my opinion.

@InquistiveJoe Haha, good point. That's just how much we care about winning. I went to a NY Giants vs Philadelphia Eagles game in Philly years ago. The Giants beat them in overtime and after the game was over, people were flipping cars and burning other teams merchandise. I guess that's just what society has turned into. Everyone wants to win and will do anything to win.
