I remember a few years ago that my best friend's little brother would call me China all the time because of Chinese Gatekeeper Girl. All because I said aloud "don't call me China" *aru*
I see, the Scarlet Devil is Chinese, then? 'Cause my old Nihongo no sensei had some interesting shit about Chinese and Japanese going at it, heh heh. :j
@LemonMeringueFox Isn't it something along the lines of "Watashi" which is me or I ( This may be wrong since, I am not japanese! ) and Touhou means East?
"LordVeldrin: sure. sure. chill. got it. your name's Hong Meiling. understood. so, next is... umm... you hear that too, PineappleDisciple? not China! her name is Meiling!"
@ArmezhiaTakashi actually, im hungarian. just took a liking to animes a few years ago, which are japanese in origin and most english dubs being lame, or not available at all. so as i kinda like how japanese sounds and since i already got my english close to native level, i decided to start learnig japanese with the same method. by watching stuff that i like in that language. AKA just like a child learns their first language. learning kana was easy.. my problem is with the kanji. ^^
Ahh... Language assimilation. Dump someone in another language and they learn to speak it pretty darn quick. Which is exactly what happens to fans of this stuff. I learn new Japanese words almost every day.
(hai. hai. ojitsuke. wakatta yo. anata no namae wa Hong Meiling desu. wakarimashita. ja, tsugi wa... ano... PineappleDisciple-san mo kikoeru ka? China janai! kanojo no namae wa Meiling desu yo!)
That I already knew. Never played Lotus Land Story (hooray for technological advancements that are also impairments). I was just stating a possible character similarity and POSSIBLE theme similarity.
@ExzcellionGamma Even trying to think of how annoying (or how it'd work) it would be makes me want to punch babies. Please. Never bring this topic up again.
Kurenai Misuzu: the "kun" pronunciation of her kanji, using native Japanese vocabulary
Hong Meiling (Hon Meirin in the Japanese accent): the "on", or Chinese, pronunciation of her kanji ( Even 1000 years ago Japan just took about half of their vocabulary from somebody else's language)
In the fan world, Japanese fans were debating over the kun and on pronunciations, so somebody had an idea of intervening with Chuugoku, that is, China.
I love how everyone gets nifty titles like ''The Youkai of Darkness'' or ''The Eternally Young Scarlet Moon'', but Meiling just gets ''Chinese Girl'' 'xD
@jettythesunfish Oh, I know, pretty much every character gets at least two or three different titles ^^ But I was only talking about the titles in EoSD! =o
Now that I think about it, I wonder how she migrated from China to Gensokyo... o 3o I'd kind of assumed that they were all born there, and that only some really special ones like Yukari could travel between the outside world and Gensokyo =o
@EpicVonepicness Back when EoSD came out, there was confusion on whether to read her name with either the Japanese or Chinese reading. So they just started calling her China because it was easier :P
@EpicVonepicness I think it originally came from 2ch. People there couldn't come to an agreement, so someone said they should just call her China because it seemed she was "most easily identified by her clothes."
China's boss theme has the name of the company that makes Touhou games (Team Shanghai Alice) hidden in both her stage and boss theme. That is one of the many reasons as to why Meiling is one of the best characters in the franchise.
@PokeNaruBleach ... jeez. I can't really take text talk as un-serious unless there's some kind of INDICATOR. Seriously, we know what words are being said, but we don't know what tone their being said in.
@ShiningFlare100 it wasn't completely towards you, the comment was to everyone who keeps saying that china isn't her name, which is half true at the same time. they just refer her to that because she is a master of chinese martial arts and something else that i don't remember. so, don't take it personally. also, that dumbass comment was completely rude and i apologize for it.
@ShiningFlare100 no, you didn't go overboard. what i said was unneeded and rude. if you didn't know that was her nickname, then i had no right to call you dumbass and i am very sorry for it as well.
