The sister's may be spoiled but I noticed they say thank you and seem to appreciate what their parent's do for them.However,they have a 21 year old living with them that doesn't do anything.This is season one so I don't think the economy was as bad then so she should have a job and the 18 year old dropped out of high school so she should have one as well if she's not in school.
I'm sorry I'm sure alot of people are going to argue with me but the black mom is WAY off. My best friend of 10yrs in black and we did exactly the same thing all throughout school. Scored exactly the same... all... throughout....school. Identical school records and she got a full ride scholarship to a university, the uni we wanted to attend.. the reason? Even with a decent school record it was because she was black thats what she and several of my friends received, admittedly! I wasn't as lucky

I am frustrated though that throughout these years they have seen their children' wrongdoings and have done nothing to fix it (e.g. in regards to their education & lack of respect for money). Even then (whenever the show was filmed), when they still had an influence over their daughters they seemed too complacent to try to correct their ways.

I don't know...as a visible minority, I do find that you have to be as good or better to be looked at successful. I'm Scottish and a lot of the collages favor kids who come from harder backgrounds one working parent etc and all our major universities are free because they are government funded, whereas i think american ones are privately owned aren't they ? so there's more room to be swayed by a large cheque. @cosacr I don't know if that's fair... Its not as if she's happy about it. She's a pushover. The problem is that her husband is a pushover as well. There needs to be a balance, at least one tough parent or we see the results... Useless, lazy, disrespectful children.

@Boobalopbop You're right. Looking at the video again, I can see that the parents are not happy about their daughters' spoiled personalities. I am frustrated though that throughout these years they have seen their children' wrongdoings and have done nothing to fix it (e.g. in regards to their education & lack of respect for money). Even then (whenever the show was filmed), when they still had an influence over their daughters they seemed too complacent to try to correct their ways.

I treated everyone with respect when I came to this country, blacks blame me for slavery, even though none of my family even lived in this country and I have Hispanics telling MY family stole Mexico from them, when they have no idea that I'm part Mexican as well they only see WHITE . People ONLY look at color these days that is racist, no matter color you are. The jobs I try to get are in business buildings and such, now everything in California requires knowing Spanish. SMARTASS.

I don't know...as a visible minority, I do find that you have to be as good or better to be looked at successful. I mean, when my cousin was pregnant, they knew the sex of the baby, but didn't want to tell her because they thought she would hurt herself or the baby if they told her it was a girl. She found out because she randomly asked "Oh, is it still a girl?" and they said yes.
I'm sorry if this sounds harsh, but you can't know what it's like to be a minority until you are one. Sorry.

I don't really think a person can say I "have" to be somewhere to feel that impact. It's not necessarily someone burning a corss on your lawn, it's when you're around people who say "Rajiv? Yeah, let's not call him, he probably can't afford our product. Call Paul instead." Things like that.

hmmm call me weird, but i think what shelly is doing to her kids is pretty great. we need more parents like her. when my son is older i hope hes like her kids. i mean, the whole chore thing is pretty crazy to me...but the studying is great.

Children should have time to be children. They don't need to be studing all the time. Also, if my daughter ran up 3000 dollars on my credit card, I'd maker her get a job and pay it back.

Exactly, you can only be a child once. Not to mention studying correctly will alleviate the need to study constantly. Teach your kids how to study instead of forcing them to stare at a page all night.

I'm pretty sure it's NOT hard to get somewhere when being black or Hispanic ,when you can get free scholarships for just being a certain color. Blacks have NO REASON TO COMPLAIN ANYMORE THEN ANY OTHER RACE. I can't get a job because I'm white, WOW, shouldn't I have one..since it's sooo easy for us. Living in America, racism has just shifted, when it should be completely gone. Race shouldn't matter AT ALL, too anyone and nobody has to be inferior to anyone for any reason.

Agreed. They only need to be decent at school and not be a complete fuckup for scholarships whilst white people have to do a shitload more (and compete with all races).
It's BS and I can't even find a summer job to help pay my tuition because of the economy.

Not true...I'm Latina, and I didn't get any financial aid to pay for college, because of the BS system they have that won't help out middle class families that are "too rich" to qualify, yet don't have the funds to pay everything out of pocket

I'm Scottish and a lot of the collages favor kids who come from harder backgrounds one working parent etc and all our major universities are free because they are government funded, whereas i think american ones are privately owned aren't they ? so there's more room to be swayed by a large cheque. Shame :( just move here, although food and a place to live might cost a lot :P

Those spoiled girls lead rather boring lives, doing nothing, headed for nothing.
I'd rather be in the strict home just for the fact that they dont have a choice but to do thier school work.
Given the CHOICE, most kids would not do it.
They'll thank thier strict parents when they're older and they do have more oppertunity to be choosy about thier life, because they'll be able to go for better jobs, etc.
Strict parents should find some balance though and let the kids chill once in a while.

'm so happy that my mom had me cook and clean, because now that I live alone, I can do it. Also, I'm glad that I know the value of money, because while other people have no money at the end of the month, I put away every month. It's important to give a child a proper upbringing.
