What did all these Eastern European immigrants to Gary have in common? They were Jewish. Gary Indian had a large Jewish population. A. Martin Katz (1964–67) became major in 1964. Jews are as racists as the anglo saxons and refused to integrate with the black population. Gary would have thrived if the Jews were more open minded.
@andrewrocks10 BS man, that population is less by a bit in atl and yet its still going to hell, i was mugged twice in atlanta, and now that i live in indiana i have a handgun carry permit, and if i ever have to go to gary i'm carrying my gun and not letting any of the locals get near me so that wont happen again.
@LocustsOfSteel As a white man and a frequent visitor to Gary, I can tell you that you don't need your gun and you have nothing to worry about. Rather tnan scaring the locals away by brandishing your gun, you could engage with them and learn something about your Indiana neighbours.
@indiana1977 I do engage the locals in conversation, I'm a rather friendly guy, but regardless of how you engage others your still at a disposition when in a bad neighborhood and unarmed, get a couple of stab wounds for no good reason and you'll see things in a slightly different hue.
It'll be only safe to revive Gary when the local PD is replaced with private security agencies like Blackwater Worldwide, Armour Group and Executive Outcomes.
Haunting to see the inside of the City Methodist Church with people actually inside!
So sad, what happened to Gary. We have to admit that the loss of jobs is the huge reason why Gary went down, but I think the racial element--the difference in values--is also a huge reason.
i dont think ne body is blamin ne one race here gary is fucked up im from hammond and the lack of good mill job has affected the whole northwest region from what i seen and the city has historically always been known as a very racist place
Actually? United States Steel was built in 1909. And named Carnegie Steel. The name was changed in the late 20's. I know. I worked there from 1976 to 1983. The rail mill had a huge beam that had Carnegie Steel on it. (As you walked in the Broadway Street, main gate.)
Gary is the most dangerous city in Indiana. More killings than any other city in Indiana.
@PsychoReaper49 I agree with you. When will people stop being ignorant assholes and realize we are all humans? Dividing is allows things like gary to happen.

@girldiesel You are wrong, it was founded in 1906, not quite early enough to considered a founding city.

I should say, the difference in values and ALSO in experience. We are all products of our family/culture/regional values and background.

The White Man did not destroy GARY.
The White man did not destroy DETROIT.
White flight ? Damn right.... The White Man does not destroy, burn....
So what is the common denominator in Detroit and Gary? History speaks volumes.

It's the human races fault.
They want shit changed?
They want this economic crisis to disappear?
Well, stop electing officials that only wan to destroy this great land.
Peaceful protest is the only way to solve this.
Or noncompliance in the United States.
However, we know how stupid the human race is, not everyone would go a week without doing anything.
We are FUCKED!!!

Well it's been 8 months, How many "peaceful protests" have worked for you?
