Love this movie and this scene in particular!! I read both of the books this movie was based on "Lay this Laurel" and "One Gallant Rush" . . . one was better than the other, but I can't remember which anymore . . . well, neither were bad, so read them both! Brilliant movie!
This was filmed outside an antebellum home in Richmond Hill, GA that was owned by a friend of mine. Ed Zwick had filmed the formal outdoor party scene, and If I recall correctly, it was "Second Camera" that filmed this scene. I was in full dress Union Cavalry gear with a Hardee Hat, and was just more or less standing around watching things as they were being filmed. It was as they filmed this scene that I realized that there was going to be something extra special about this movie.
Add me to the many who will always honor the 54th and their sacrifice. I am moved by their story and what it means to me as a African American. I am so proud and moved to know that these men bled and died for a cause that they believed in. Although they lost the final assault on Wagner, those who died will never be forgotten.
I really love how, in this scene, we see not one but two main characters finding solace and comfort in the brotherhood of the54th, which was theirs all along. Trip we see openly admitting his pride in and love for the regiment as he realises he had no need to fight against them, but for me it's the look of tacit recognition on Searles' face that does it for me. Up to that point, he never really identified with the other men so much, but Trip's line "We men, ain't we" clearly chimes with him.
I just get chills when Morgan Freeman's Character speaks of "Our Great Gettin' Up Mornin'" - something all Christians are looking forward to.
I used to walk past a bronze mural - in the Boston Common - dedicated to the 54th - on my way to the dentist when I was a kid. Didn't really understand what it was as a child.
Love this scene. Reminds me a little of the lockeroom right before a big game. Its the bond that they share. That win, lose, live, die, they do it together.
and i love this movie. deal with ur false sense of superiority.
of course if i had been born back in the day i would have defended Wagner and put my crosshairs on ANYONE IN BLUE attacking Southern soil. its that simple. to helll w/ ur biased bigotry.
Im not American, but I was obsessing with the American Civil War during my Cultural Study studies... I surely was clapping and humming to that scene, and still am 2 years later, movie is amazing! Mhhhh Mhhhhhhhh mhhh mhhhhh, oh my lord, lord, lord, loooooord
in sunday school my teacher asked me to pick a song to sing and i chose this one and started singing. everyone joined me then after i got in trouble :)
This is why i truly believe that more than half of the percent of black people are great strong willed god fearing people, and shouldn't be judged by what the smaller percent of black people do. amen to all my brothas, oh my lord lord lord
@RoninAquila First their savior is Hebrew, second technically it was the Muslims that first went into Africa and introduced slavery to them. European Christians didn't travel African land until about a hundred years after Middle Easterners had brought Islam, slavery, and monarchy into Africa. Plus Christianity promised equallity and freedom for the faithful, that's what brought them in. The family cohesion kept them devout.
@rangersneak Though it does not help that (in America, Australia, Europe and Asia at least) mass media, including those published by the Church UNIVERSALLY depicts Jesus as a snow-white-Caucasian; and that unfortunately is the face of the savior that entire generations grow up with.
Aggravating this further is that there is NOT ONE Black or Asian saint, further reinforcing the Elizabethan Heirarchy of racial righteousness.
I'll stick with Buddah, who regards me as a human, Thank You.
@RoninAquila in 1620 the second group of slaves brought to america were freed and the enslavers imprisoned because of bible verses out of deuteronomy and exodus. In 1854 the whigs, anti slavery abolitionists, and christian quakers formed the republican party and it main mission was rid america of the evils of slavery and yes it was a christian movement.
WHERE THE FUCK IS THE REST OF THE MOVIE???.. ALL I EVER SEE IS FUCKING SIDESHOWS AND EDITS HERE AND THERE...THE SINGING WAS THE GOOD PART, BUT WHERE THE FUCK IS PREPERATIONS FOR BATTLE WHICH IS THE NEXT SCENE...
For some reason my SS class was laughing at some points in this movie, like in the end, when Shaw is dead, how the Colored man falls on him they started to laugh, besides me..... immaturity, plus it's kinda wrong. Why would you laugh at death? Oh well.
What im talking about is that they were not allowed the basic rights of citizenship and yet they still chose to fight for this country instead of trying to pick little stuff apart like you are. don't forget that alot of white people died to end the evil of slavery.
This is Patriotism , not asking for a handout just asking to do their part for the war.God Bless these Men Americans by choice not by Birth, Our young people could do well to inherit this spirit and example rather than modern day thugs and gangsters.
@1kellisman what the hell you talking about, by choice not by Birth. THEY ARE AMERICANS, BY BIRTH, SINCE 1787, written as 3/5ths. which means they didnt have a choice. BEFORE THE CIVIL WAR IN 1865/. OUR WHITE OLD FOLKS COULD DO WELL TO INHERIT THE TRUTH, that their infringement, means they are the lazy ones, that lack spirit and face, and industrialism. MODERN WHITES, ARE IN TOO MUCH FALSE PRIVILEGE. IT GONNA BE A SHOCK WHEN THEY FIND HOW STUPID THEIR VANITY IS.
Denzel in this scene is the greatest acting I have ever seen.

One thing I find curious about African American Christianity:
Was it not Christianity that disposessed their Ancestors, took them from their homes, robbed them of their own Gods, cultures and heritage.
And to rub salt in the wounds, tell them that their TRUE savior is a white man.
And yet African Americans remain so devout to a God that has dehumanized them, disposessed their heritage and rendered them second class citizens.
Curioser and curioser.
