Holy Fuck, I'm amazed at how similar of a situation I have to yours. My mom is so forceful, signing me up for the randomest shit ever. I totally agree on how when you're not forced to do something, you learn a lot easier. I played piano since I was 2- 13. After I quit I was so happy and thought I would never go back. However, in my junior year of High School, I heard a beautiful piece of piano, wanted to go back, and learned piano fluently. So true!

As for mainland China, with over 1.3 billion people, severe competition and one-child-policy, most parents just wish for their children to have a better life, which could explain their harsh attitude. With everyone else pushing their spouse to playing piano at the age of three, waiting for your child to show musical talent, e.g. at the age of eight, could be way too late... not saying, that I am favoring this all... but I probably wouldn't know better, if I was a chinese parent...

Okay the piano bit is super funny. but as a parent, I do that to my kids who are teenagers. I make2 of them practice dance. One practices acrobatics. I make my daughter play the cello.  my son plays the violin. They hate it, and im like so what. the slipper to the face is a good idea so thanks for the tip. they are bigger than me now and no longer scared to say "No, I hate it". so the slipper might help. lol

i think my parents forced me to take those lessons because they didn't have the chance to learn those things when they were kids. i understand their intentions and am grateful that my appreciation for classical art and music has become an important part of my life. but i agree, there has to be a limit. and i confess that i fell frustrated, the more i advance in these hobbies of mine, the more i grow apart from them, since they dont really trully share these interests.
