The original glitch from SMB1 for the infinite lives. Nintendo just loves that glitch, and to hide the fact it WAS a glitch, made it a trick instead. To keep it implimented even here is pretty awesome.

You do the first jump manually, obviously. You have to time it right yourself. Once the turtle is stuck, you don't press anything, and you'll automatically keep jumping on the turtle, but only if you timed it correctly.

Old trick is old. Nintendo purposly set that koopa there for the specific intention to do this trick. Since the first Super Mario Bros. WAY back on the NES this trick has been possible. Nintendo even acknowlaged its existance in the 9-volt intro cutscene in Wario Ware: Touched!

The difficulty of the Mario games were always about the levels, not losing lives. If you get game over, you'll have to go back and play the previous levels all over, now where's the challenge in that?
