I wish people could find the actual arcade for this game and upload it. All the uploads that say arcade on them so far ARE NOT the arcade. They're all the different console versions that have been out, or a revamp of it for the PSP, which is still not this same Arcade version.
it was common to use "redrawn screens" in magazine ads; but using a cartoon in a TV commercial and making it look like a video game sequence !.. it's almost felony :(
That's not the case here. This WAS the arcade game. It wasn't the 2600 version. And as of today, this is also the hardest most impossible game to find in this original arcade version that you see in this cool commercial. All you get now are the console versions that have been uploaded, or the revamped PVP version that's STILL not this arcade version that was out. This was a RAVE of a game back in the day because it was so advanced as far as the look).
it IS the arcade version. the sprites are full size and the on-screen colors at one time and per character are much higher than what the NES could support.
The version shown in the video doesn't match the screenshots of any version of Congo Bongo that I've ever seen. It's definitely not the 5200 or Colecovision versions.
Awesome commercial . . but that's not the 2600. I think that's the 2800 or higher . . or Coleco. Atari 2600 was the system below that with the E.T. and Empire Strikes Back game. And the Pack Man that went beem beem been been :)
That's more closer to the Atari 5200 and 8-bit computer versions. The ColecoVision version resembles the arcade original a bit more with its diagonal orientation.
Yes. In fact, I'm pretty sure Sega invented isometric gaming with Congo Bongo. You're probably saying "Wait a minute. If Congo Bongo invented isometric gaming, why does Sonic 3D Blast suck so badly?" The answer: it was made by a completely different development team who had no idea how to make an isometric game. And by the way, Sega existed long before Sonic or even the Master System.
Your right this game is not for the Atari 2600, and it might not even be for the Atari 7800. This game is probably for the Colecovision, which had way better graphics than both systems combined!
That is also ture, the main downfall of the Colecovision was that there was no software avaliable at that time to take full advantage of its hardware...dispite this the system had exillent grpahics
I'm not sure this was either the Colecovision or Arcade. It actually looked like a mock up / cartoon. The graphics are even sharper than the arcade. Here's Congo Bongo on the Colecovision:
It could very well be, the Colecovison had graphics that were ahead of its time. But yes I agree that the graphics in the commercial do look a little cartoony. Of course video game companies were willing to do just about anything to make there games look better, exspecially before the market crash.
I used to have a bunch of 7-eleven video game slurpee cups.

The atari 2600 and 800 congo bongo were not as good as other versions like the c64 version.

And this is not the Atari 2600 Version. This is the actual arcade footage from the real arcade game.

I was going to say this is the Colecovision (equivalent in power to the original NES).
But after watching it again, I think it's probably the arcade version, which would have been almost 16-bit in quality.

As a child, I remember seeing commercials for Congo Bongo on television. It was most likely this ad shown here.
All I wanted for my 2600 and Christmas was that darned game.
Well, spoiled child I was, I did receive Congo Bongo, but it was nothing like what I had seen.
Pure suckage. My first real duped experience with advertising.
Thanks for the memories.....I think.

Oh man, I remember playing this on... the first Atari emulator I ever had. XP Still, nice memories; an isometric Donkey Kong was a pretty cool idea.

I LOVED playing Congo Bongo, but boy, those monkeys were a menace!

Funny, but I always thought Henny Youngman did the voiceover years ago, but it's clearly not him listening to him now.
I had the Commodore version of this game back then. It was good one for its time.
