I saw this band the night before they did this studio session, which was a live TV recording with no edits in the WHYY studios the next afternoon. This Jay Chattaway chart was recorded by Maynard but never released by Columbia. This arrangement was just put in the books at the time of this vid. Maynard inspired me and quite a few of us on the NY scene to go on to play professionally. He was a consummate performer and one of the greatest brass players ever, especially in the 50's, 60's, and 70's.
@noclams - dude, I agree 100% about inspring young musicians to play. Virtually every drum & bugle corp player still imitates him!
I knew a couple of the guys in the band and loved going to their concerts, hanging with them and playing their music. We did several Maynard tunes in a college band I was in - Don't let the Sun Go Down on Me, Hey Jude, La Fiesta, Mac's Park, etc.
I think God handed him a Golden Trumpet when he arrived. This is rare indeed here. He never goes below double E. yes, the breathing technique is clearly visible and another yogic reward.
@altima169 - it's called 'circular breathing' and every wind instrument player should know how to do it. But can you imagine the tremendous air pressure MF had to control while doing that?!? wow!
@scargile MF did yogic breathing. He spent some time in India learning how to do it. Circular breathing is a great skill for all us trumpeters to learn.
@altima169 Well, I thought this old dog had learned a new trick, but after researching 'yogic breathing' I'm not sure we're talking about the same thing, As a young tuba/bass trombone player we were taught yogic breathing (still do it today naturally). However, in my early 20's I learned how to circular breath. Imagine filling your mouth full of water then spitting it out while breathing in through your nose. This is what I see MF doing at the end of this chart, no? What am I missing here?
@scargile An old trumpeter friend of MF told me it was yogic breathing and the story about MF studying in India. And he did this instead of circular breathing. The video shows him manipulating his diaphragm but he does not fill his cheeks in order to circular breath. That is the sign of his style of yogic breathing.
@altima169 You are 100% correct - my mistake. I knew about his time & studies in India and have since watched several more videos showing exactly what you describe. There is no classic circular breathing but rather 'the wave' of yogic breathing. Whatever the technique was called, the man was a monster! I'm just glad I got to see him in person many times. RIP
Listening to this, I understand why Maynard never recorded this...there are some very noticable intonation problems. Maybe due to the key, I believe it's d-flat concert...Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Maynard! But this was not one of his better sounding charts IMHO....Bone solo is great but the band is OUT OF TUNE
@TisoyAko93 It's what you're supposed to do when you're learning trombone, since it makes it easy to find third position. Even though once you progress, you change your position to stay in tune, you still do it out of pure habit.
@TisoyAko93 i do it as a matter of habit (3rd and 4th position), one of my instructors way when, the great Bill Moser, promised to chop my fingers off if I didn't stop....i never did and he never chopped them off.
Maynard and Randy are jamming in heaven. There will never be another Maynard....and we don't "just" love him for being the best at what he did...It's who he was. Over 4 years has past since his death, and I still can't believe it. Maynard lives.
Randy Purcell was a great with Multi phonics - he could play one note while humming another - the guy was great. He did shave shortly after this recording . . . .
This features the arranging and playing talents of one my huge influences from my hometown,Randy Purcell. One of a kind as a person, and as a musician.I will miss him always!
@charvinaldo Haha, I wonder how many people have asked him that, this is not a question guys like maynard want to hear, but since this is youtube, with power and good tone and control anytime anyday from around 1950-1990 he could easily hit a double C, now we have all heard him play higher, but, on trumpet or flugelhorn, he could scream a good full triple c, of course he did not all the time or as much as that double C for obvious reasons, but I think its safe to say around a triple c, to answer

This song needs a lot more vocally sung words in it, and a whole lot less trumpet, and a whole lot less brass instruments for that matter.
I don't know WHY some musicians take a beautiful vocal song and do THIS to it. If these guys were entertaining in Jabba The Hutt's lair, the floor would open up, and the pit monster would eet these guys alive. And THEN you'd hear some screeching and screaming. HAH -- I crack me up.
There will never be another Maynard. And to those who are criticizing and knocking, either you have no clue about Maynard's rare and unique talents, or you're just a hater who never got beyond the middle of your section in high school.
I saw Maynard many times during my younger days and can honestly say that he was one of the most genuine and amazing performers I have witnessed - even to this day.

What an awful noise, some musicians think that playing loud is always good, in this case it aint. The trombone player needs some lessons, any one hear a tune ?
Shut the hell up if you don't like it don't listen, this was amazing and the trombone player needs to give lessons so that more people play like him. Its a big band.
Oh what I'd give to play half that high on a trumpet but I guess I'll settle for clear. I love listening to MF. I did laugh at the caveman joke. Hairdos are from the 70's just like the song.
i usually don't comment, but this man is a musical genius. and if you really knew how hard it was to play an instrument you wouldn't be judging. he is awesome.
First time I run across this guy so I don't have a lot to judge him by but, musically...overplaying is not Musically sound. I hatede this version. Showing off distracted me from the escence of the song. I'll check out other videos of this guy and hope it was just a one time deal with all this egocentric fan fare.
1. Use whatever pressure you want, I used medium to heavy and was able to hit the same register consistently. Louis Armstrong used very little pressure and did fine : ) 2. Maynard used Jettone mouthpieces. 3. Maynard was one of the best because of so many people he entertained and got excited to mimic him...he was the standard...
True. But some people have messed up their chops by pressure. Also, I agree though lol. I use pressure after a while and I play decently fine lol.
Louis was awesome lol. But Maynard did use a Jet tone, but that doesn't add range. They have big mouthpieces as well lol. And Maynard only had the Jet Tone cause they, like others also, made the convex/no bite rim he loved. He was a walking lung. ALL AIR. He talks about it in a 13 part clinic video on youtube lol.
i wouldnt watch manyard to learn to play high. hes basically swalling his trumpet when hes playing high. you want minimal pressure on your chops. watch how allen vizutti plays high. he has like no pressure at all and i hate him for it it lol
that is so flawed. the reason teachers say that is because pressure in the beginning student is very hazardous to tone and their overall playing. but ascending very far into the upper register there is a balance of air AND pressure, not just air. now, i'm not saying it's all pressure. but there is a fine balance of both. air can't get all notes to come out. if that was the case then every altissimo player would be able to hit quintuples, cause i know their air is amazing
Thats not true. I appears that he is using pressure because he puckers his lips out into the mouthpiece. And inf1nity is right, there has to be a balance, there is no such thing as minimum pressure, it doesn't exist. You have to use at least some pressure to play the trumpet. I use little pressure to play and I can get double C's easily. But if you think I use no pressure when I'm playing a double C you're kidding yourself. I just don't use EXCESS pressure.
Yeah, using pressure makes it harder to play altissimo stuff. Pressure is only needed to change to your desired tone, appropriate to whatever style you're playing.
In response to mathias, you can model yourself after whoever you want, everyone has their opinion on who's the best. The only thing is you can't really learn how Vizzuti does it from watching because he's making it look easy...at least with Maynard, you can see his method of breathing.
Yeah FitzHorns, nobody's perfect, big deal...let's go through and point out every little mistake anyone's ever did, how much better is that going to make us feel about ourselves...and this is a little one by far compared to anyone else who's tried playing something like this. Mistakes do happen in live performances, it's too bad that the recording industry has given everyone this naive impression of perfection. Even Herseth missed once in a while, but he wasn't playing anything this hard.
my high school jazz band did this exact song! copies of the original charts! i played the first trombone part and solos and my director played maynards part. this song has changed the way i feel about jazz forever!
i also, radar was able see Maynard live, when i was in high school. around 95-96 i believe, maynard came to town and showed in the high school gym, believe it or not. I feel privelaged to have seen and heard him play
I am saddened to hear of Randy Purcell's death. He and his playing will be missed. I already get sentimental when I hear these recordings - I was privilaged to get to be there to hear these songs performed live. The energy and emotion were fantastic.
Thank you so much for posting this recording. It's too bad no records were released with "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me" back in the day.
Maynard's gone, now Randy's gone. One by one my idols disappear...
Randy will be missed. His son Shawn and I will be doing a tribute on Groove Bone and on WEFT-Champaign in the near future. Another great and important trombonist that has left us.
Who cares how Randy looks? This is jazz history - and I mean gone, past. Maynard has died and Randy may be on his last legs in a nursing home. I am his sister and this video brings lots of happiness to our parents - who are 87 and a half and 90 and still healthy. Randy is 63 and very ill. Close your eyes and listen!
Maynard used a jet tone with a v cup, i don't really know wat company prob. holton leblanc cause i know he used those for a wile, and stan mark and lynn nicholson both played lead i believe
Sorry to hear about Randy Purcell. He scheduled to teach at a camp in Maryland, cancelled out, next thing you know he is with Maynard.
I went to Jamey Aebrsold camp with Chris Braymen, great guy. He was the only one understanding David Baker's ideas well enough to ask a good question.
Cris was on
Hollywood, and the Live in San Francisco album. Fireshaker solo. Also with Full Faith and Credit, Slide and Dave Eshelman Jazz Garden Big Band.

my high school jazz band did this exact song! copies of the original charts! i played the first trombone part and solos and my director played maynards part. this song has changed the way i feel about jazz forever!

My dad saw him 2-3 times and wanted to take me but, my 8th grade year he passed away. All the greats are going and we won't be left with much.

On The Contrary.
Yea He Was Great.
But There Always Be Someone Who Can Be Able To Play Well.
While It Won't Be The Same Talent Doesn't Hide.

i also, radar was able see Maynard live, when i was in high school. around 95-96 i believe, maynard came to town and showed in the high school gym, believe it or not. I feel privelaged to have seen and heard him play
papasmurf62713 2 years ago 2
if you thought maynard was good then, you should have seen him play be-bop when we was a lot younger before he started to destroy his chops

What a sad loss and what a great player he was. RIP.

I heard that it was supposed to be on "Primal Scream" but got bumped for "Cheshire Cat Walk". Poor choice IMHO

The word you're looking for is "ledgers."

jlvyn13. "Stafflines" extending beyond the staff itself are called ledgers.

@thewizzzzzz i'd like to see you go that low. Lol

Randy will be missed. His son Shawn and I will be doing a tribute on Groove Bone and on WEFT-Champaign in the near future. Another great and important trombonist that has left us.

Randy Purcell died this evening - age 63. Complications from living a crazy life is the best description. So, the sun came down on him.

Maynard...always the best. Heard him live in about 95 or 96 in Australia. 16 piece band sounded like 30 people playing.

Where can I get that doublecup from 30 years ago?
I Haven't played that in a long time.
Really want to again.
Maynard, YOU WILL ALWAYS BE MY HERO!

To JazzyBlues804,
Who cares how Randy looks? This is jazz history - and I mean gone, past. Maynard has died and Randy may be on his last legs in a nursing home. I am his sister and this video brings lots of happiness to our parents - who are 87 and a half and 90 and still healthy. Randy is 63 and very ill. Close your eyes and listen!
leslieupchurch 2 years ago
Alright, Randy is great, but he looks like the caveman on the GEICO commercials. No disrespect
