  • oh i see g1, never mind

  • Evans g2 or g1 ?...i want whatever those are, thanx.

  • Pretty awesome sounding DG...

  • @brandobean Hey Brandon! Thanks, man!

  • Dunnett snare?

  • @NerfLad Keplinger! 5.5x14 stainless steel.

  • @bleener It sounds good! I like the spread alot... does it like to tune low? By the way, I'm diggin' those fat flams!

  • @NerfLad The Kep can definitely tune low - I prefer it in a higher tuning, but I've flopped it out for some recording and it gets enormous sounding.

  • @bleener Sweeeeet. I've got a steel snare with a surprising amount of versatility as well. I think steel gets a bad rep because it's used in so many awful starter-snares.

  • @NerfLad There's definitely nothing "starter" about the Kep! It tips the scales at nearly 20 pounds, too.

  • @bleener I'm sure there's nothing starter about the price either! What did it set you back, if you don't mind me asking?

  • @NerfLad I got it from Keplinger for $450 as he was selling it for a previous customer that couldn't play any longer. A new one would be in the $800-ish range. I also have a black iron and brass snare from him.

  • @bleener Very cool. Never payed more than 400 for a snare... How do you like the iron drum?

  • @NerfLad The black iron is a darker sound than the stainless - great for fat backbeats. Man, I'm really sorry about the high-end swirlies on this vid; it was the export function of Final Cut X, not my micing. Never again...

  • @bleener I feel... like... I'm going in and out... of a whirl pool... in slow motion....

  • 8x12, 16x16?

  • @jmdrummer7 Correct!

  • @bleener My kit is similar to yours, 8x12,16x16,16x22, classic maple in waterfall bubinga. I found that clear Ambassadors also work well on the toms, nice resonant tone and they don't wear out as fast as people say they do.

  • @jmdrummer7 I've tried a bunch of Remos on these drums and just can't get the sound I like as well as I can with the Evans.

  • @bleener Yeah, Evans does make great heads.

  • Is there something wrong with the audio?

I'm getting a "swirl" in the high end.

    The toms sound great.

Single ply is the way to go in my opinion.

  • @dww0902 I think the mic that's just above the floor tom and is panned hard-right as the "right overhead" is a little too close to the ride/crash on that side of the kit and it's picking up a lot of the cymbal movement causing a phasiness in the top-end of the mix. My bad and won't happen again! :-)

  • @dww0902 ACtually, I'm listening to this again and yes, there's an issue with the high-end that was caused by the YouTube conversion; going to see if I can fix it...

  • Looks like you're using some newer mic placements than some of your previous vids. The condenser in the center and a smaller diaphragm behind the floor tom. It looks like you have some overheads, too, maybe centered front/behind the kit...

I've been trying some of these things out, too. Any particular placements that have really wowed you? The drums sound great as always!! Great playing, too!!

  • @cwoguinn Thanks for the compliments! I try to mix up the micing often and I use these videos and tests on my own playing as experiments for things I may want to use in sessions with clients. The mic in the center just above the kick is a Shiny Box ribbon, not a condenser - its figure-8 pattern is really focused on the snare and kick beater while rejecting the wash from the ride directly next to it. The mono overhead and the mic behind the floor tom are panned hard left and right.
