I have never been to Brazil, however I am Guyanese American. my whole family is from Guyana, directly above Brazil and we now live in NY. I am doing my graduate study on the cultural patterns of members in the African Diaspora. I think it is a bit of a blanket statement to say that black people in any country outside of Africa are full black. we have post-colonialism to thank for the array of complexions and features in most Islandic, Latin American or North American countries. Still, Brazil ha
Bahia is only in the eyes of foreigners (Gringoes) a black state because in their country, they are being taught that it is without questioning or doing their own research. Fact is Bahia (like other north eastern states) have many black/dark skin people, but professors who knows how to research their true DNA have proven that majority aren't full black at all. Majority are blacks mix from European (Dutch, French, Portuguese, British and Irish) and Natives roots. Minority are full black.
@ImGonnaKillYou2nd that's not the point of they are still called black if they are black. black is black, but to understand the how complex it is you should know their background.
@ImGonnaKillYou2nd In the west of Brazil, there aren't many blacks. though black is black, because black they call negro or preto there, what's normal. Facts are Majority of them in the west are white, second mulatos (black mix with white), third Amerindian (Amazon indians), minority cafuzos (black mix with amerindian), blacks and asian (japanese, chinese and from india)
Hopefully one day we can both have the living experience of both countries so we can exchange more iideas! It's one of my dreams to live in Cuba for a while!
Hey people check out MARGARETH MENEZES in the trio MASCARADOS or AFRO-POP BRASILEIRO. IT IS ALL GOOD!! Great people ,Great energy great music!! She is an ecletic Brazilian singer from Bahia whom had her Son Elegipo played all over in the beginning of her carrier, nowardays she plays everything and her carnival music is VIBRANT along with other non carnival music. Her new hit SELEI, SELEI is awsome and COCO M is awsome too!!! Love it!!!
@nigerianlove12 well I'm a mixed Brazilian who was born n raised in the Northeast whose got family from everywhere in the country and even though Bahia has a lot of dark skin ppl (mixed black, native indian and white) I never heard ppl descrbing it that way, aside from foreigners who seem to have a hard time grasping Brazilian culture. Rio has very strong black roots also... It's about a certain misidentity "feeling" and that's hard to explain. Die and ressurect as a Brazilian to get it! LOL
@tatianasevero being brasilian has nothing to do with it. Im Cuban and there are states in Cuba that a majority black/mulatto, one doesnt have to be cuban or in your case brasilian to see whats obvious.
@nigerianlove12 What I'm saying is that no one who knows Bahia well would ever describe it as a black state as It goes way beyond that. And even though we are both latinos, you can"t compare both countries at all. Brazil historically speaking has always been 'the odd one out' for its size, diversity, culture, language and values, not only in Latin America but worldwide. I can't talk about Cuba's black states as I have not been there yet and whatever I've read or may read won't ever suffice.
Responder a este vídeo... What's more obvious to me here is the mix. Differently from countries like the US, France or UK people from different races blend in. We are not scared of describing anyone as black, japanese or whatever. But there is no actual "barrio", "gueto" etc based on race. We all carry the same sense of misidentity when it comes to racial background. There's no diff dress code, behavior, language, set of values or location that could demonstrate that.
@scnorcali11 Yes Salvador, but I was also looking at Rio. Not sure where to go for a 1st timer. I am interested in the garotas de programma. :-) Are the prices lower in Salvador?
To the people who are trying to deny that white Brazilians are racist toward their black countrymen and that racism results in discrimination by race thats deeply rooted in their institutions and culture. In fact black Brazialians are at least a century behind black Americans, and a great part of their problem is denial by white Brazillians of their anti-black racism! And that's the long and the short of it!
...because he doesn't have a decent white-collar worker career.
That's what this brilliant music video has to do with the economic situation of the Afro-Brasilians. Enjoy your system, Brit, but let us enjoy our music. Olodum ROCKS!!!
@OlodumRocks Yeah, just let the blacks dance and sing and send them
back to the slums where they belong with no education or opportunities. Why should we discuss something as meaningless as racism when we could just shake our ass.
Many afroamericans are travelling to Bahia, (especially Salvador and Cachoeira) to meet with their roots, because african culture has been better preserved here than in Africa, where it has evolved and changed. There is an institute or organization in the US that organizes those travels. Maybe the ones is interested should contact the American Brasilian Institute in Salvador: ACBEUBAHIA or the consulate.
Im not trying to divide...i was refering to obama knowing his ancestors in his case it was only one generation...you can be chinese if thats going to make you happy but you cant label other people the wrong affiliations.

Here in Brazil we don't like to make that kind of distintction, after all we are all the same, all human beings although with different backgrounds. Maybe you can write that difference in your birth certificate, nothing else, why is it necessary? Here in Brazil, all people are wlecome, we don't discriminate any group, we like every kind of human being, come check it out for yourself !
Must also remember that there is severe economic discrimination in Brazil. I never saw any Afro Brazillians at the international or local airport or restaurents in Brazil (SP & Rio) (only cleaners & waiting staff). There is a huge, unbelievable economic divide in Brazil. As a general rule of thumb, the darker you are the poorer you are. When I try to discuss this with the middle classes they get very defensive.
@ duduvissotto I agree there is discrimination in most Western countries but that was not really the point. I was trying to focus on the level of discrimination and that fact that it is way higher in Brazil than anywhere else I'm aware (in terms of economic disparities) For instance in the UK it is not uncommon to find British ethnic minorities in the medical, legal, senior business and politics etc.
I understand Brazil is a massive country and i've only visted SP, rio & santos (
It certainly makes sense what you are saying, sorry for the misunderstanding.
You actually do see minorities in the medical, judicial and political fields here, although not as significant as in developed countries.
As a white person, with European (German and Italian) descent, I guess I can say that unfortunately that's a demographic fact here but this sort of figure has altered a lot over the last twenty years and hopefully it will continue following this direction/path.
@JusticeNature I usually read political news from many countries, including several European states, UK, Germany, France and Russia.
I don't really recall many British politicians with "African", arabic or any other minority descent, certainly no Prime Minister at the House of Commons. I know this ethinic disparity is more evident in Brazil and most emerging nations but it's a widespread one, it only varies in degree.
I agree that ethnic minorities are underrepresented in the British political system (the stats are 7.88% of the population are ethnic minorities & 2.32% in parliament are ethnic minorities). But, this is not the discussion. 'Ethnic disparity' is more evident in Brazil than most countries. I agree with you.I'm not trying to divide or cause uncomfort, I'm simply saying there is a massive problem with equal opportunities in Brazil that needs to be addressed.
Do you have NO answers? You seem to be ok in making spurious comments but not good in answering them. Just because you are an unhappy ethnic minority in the Uk, stop bringing your miserable, race obsessed politics to Brazil!
If you ask me a question I'll try an answer it. I'm not sure what has hit your nerve. It was a few weeks ago but I was just commenting on the injustices in Brazil...there is no rule in youtube to just discuss exactly what is in the video.... so take your prozac and say a few prayers, may help.
Verdadeiros silvicolas. A cidade fede o povo fede. Salvador nunca mais. Pessimos restaurantes e quanta gente ignorante.
Quanta pobreza. oxente do inferno
I lived in Bahia, in rio vermelho, for more than a year, 2001-2002, and the people I met and got to know and worked with (I lived in a poor part of town), they were some of the best people in the world. They should never have used the old-style pleasantry "meu rei" on someone so ignorant and , perhaps?, prejudiced, as yourself.
to anyone who loves life, and this World: go visit Salvador da Bahia!!!!!!!!!!!
i have to agree. i am in Bahia now and have enjoyed the culture immensely. i have been robbed at gun point, but have also had random people invite me into their homes to share a meal during holidays. the current president has a lot of support and Brasil, as a nation, has accomplished some great things recently. living in a developing country and watching the people strive to improve their land and lifestyle (mostly by emulating our great Nation) is inspiring. cheers!

SALVE, SALVE SALVADOR, TERRA D ALEGRIA!

Bahia.
Netfortal 3 years ago 6

Verdadeiros silvicolas. A cidade fede o povo fede. Salvador nunca mais. Pessimos restaurantes e quanta gente ignorante.
Quanta pobreza. oxente do inferno

jaydias13 4 years ago 2
Yes, "notria" , i agree with vitorius.
Ty
tunkamoose 4 years ago 6
i have to agree. i am in Bahia now and have enjoyed the culture immensely. i have been robbed at gun point, but have also had random people invite me into their homes to share a meal during holidays. the current president has a lot of support and Brasil, as a nation, has accomplished some great things recently. living in a developing country and watching the people strive to improve their land and lifestyle (mostly by emulating our great Nation) is inspiring. cheers!
