I think it came from the influence of foreign martial arts in America. In my opinion I feel it may been due 2 when the Flips migrated from the island to America and became cheap labor. Historically its written that the first wave of Asian 2 come 2 the U.s. was in the early 1600's. I imagine it was more of a bond built between Black Americans and migrant workers and a each 1 teach 1 type of thing took place. I believe that could be where certain styles came into place.
Then as time progresses more influence's where added. Like Professorkhashon7 spoke on the influence of nunchucks in the 70's. So I looked into some more research and remembered Bruce Lee. So I looked up Jkd. Totally agree with u about the rhythm and chi are basically the same things. The tapping of the elbows or clapping they hands , somebody bout to get hit. Some feel 52 do not exist , well man has hated what they could not understand for the longest. So continue hating.
the crowd went wild and all the younger kids watching the fight began copying the moves...thats how 52 grew in the hood..52 of today is missing the rawness that it had back then...kinda like old school hip hop to rap music of today..it was a different time which can not be recreated.
i think the real history of the art can only be told by NYC OG's that were in and out of Rikers Island, who lived in the hoods of NY during 70's 80's era of 52 in NYC. matches could be found in any fist fighit n hood. i spoke to a friend of mine who grew up in coney island projects in brooklyn and he recalled a fight where guy caught the other guys punch with a block..held it and kissed his opponets hand..released the block and landed a 1-2 punch!!
i dont really agree with the "african" connection in regards to 52. It was primarily developed in Rickers Island jail in NYC and traveled into the hoods of brooklyn, queens, bronx. it was basically a flashy style of boxing that would humiliate ur opponent with defense and counter punching, speed etc. i think it kinda died out in the mid 80's due to the crack epidemic and guns. it seems like it is evolving again now as more of an art form than a flashy street style of boxing.
