  • Wow, if the for the first time when I saw the movie it would've ended like this - I would remember this movie as a piece of shit and never watch it again. As it is right now I think the movie is a masterpiece.

  • Excuse me while I vomit. Sorry but I'm allergic to cheese.

  • Meh. Team 1995. I'm American, but the 1995 version isn't rushed, it doesn't change around Janes words, and it follows the book extremely well. This one is alright, but the 1995 version captured the essence better.

  • I LOVE THIS ENDING!!!! Who doesn't long for happy endings??:(

  • OMG I LOVE THIS ENDING!!! <33333

pride and prejudice is my favorite movie of all time!

  • "The scandal!" I <3 Brits.

  • I don't think it's about being "American" as much as it is about digressing from the story and the standards of propriety of the time reflected in the book. In seeing this scene, as someone from the US, it actually perplexed me as to why it was shown in this manner. I never knew until tonight that there was an alternate ending specifically cut for US audiences. That's my two cents. You can all continue to fight amongst yourselves now. lol,

  • What's up with all the UK natives bashing us 'yanks' for a good heart felt ending? Do none of you believe in romance?

  • Comment removed

  • @coffeeandharrypotter We believe in romance but not in a dirty way

  • OH MY GOD. I'm usually disgusted by romance, but holy baby jesus! This film was so enchantingly sweet and the love so beautiful. The kiss was so wonderful and sweet!

  • How is this ending cheesy?! It is so romantic! Forgive us AMERICANS who love sappy cheesy endings.

  • @FitnessCole I totally agree

  • oh we get you're happy! stop calling her Mrs. Darcy!

  • oh. it's when they're married?

  • This movie is amazing!! Keira is a wonderful actor, and "Mr Darcey" is an extravagant character. :D

  • i think the original version without this scene is much better. the cheesy "mrs. darcy" repeated over and over just ruins the mood

  • Why does there always have to be some cheesy American Climax.....

Can´t they be happy with what they have, a beautiful classic romance!

  • @yaeldekker thank God this was only in the north american relase version.

  • Why does there always have to be some cheesy American Climax.....

Can´t they be happy with what they have, a beautiful classic romance!

  • best ending ever

  • I'm glad this ending isn't in the 'normal' version... it kind of overdoes it.

  • oh never seen this ending before it was definitely different but sweet

  • Where did u get this? :P

  • @ulvsta01 this is only in the US version of the movie. This is an additional last scene.

  • @Alhuasa well after the father gives his consent the movie really does end. This is a different ending probably a bonus in DVDs. And, long live Peru! (I'm also peruvian)

  • This movie (including the ending) is one o the only things to allow me to go into a blissful trance where everything is perfect... And incandescently happy.

  • @w@ Mr Darcy~!!!

  • i think this is probably my most favourite thing in the world.

  • this movie always makes me smile :D

  • i love this ending! its like weve been waiting for that kiss the entire movie!

  • Hahahaha your tite:) Alternative/alternate = big difference. Just like tentacles/testicles

  • @filmfelineadmin

this is the non-conformist ending. :)

  • D'AWWWWWW

I'm not one to get giggly on chick flicks but oh man, this movie was adorable. haha

  • Um, I live in America, and I'm curious. How did the other version of the movie end? Did the credits just start rolling after her father gives his consent? Or did it stop after Darcy meets her in the field?

  • @femalephantomdimes5 that's not fair... you got to watch this beautiful amazing ending????? i live in peru and what i got to watch ended after the father gave his consent.... sadness.. :( well at least i can watch this ending here,,,

  • even fairy tales have kisses. it made the ending perfect. when i watched it, i felt it was missing something, until i watched this.

  • @Creaturesinsideme but this is not a fairy tale. that's the problem. why everything should end up like a fairy tale? this is the adaptation of a beautiful novel. I saw the non-american version and I think the end without the kiss turns the story perfect.

  • the sweetest kisses I 've ever seen...

  • ah yes, the American ending...

  • @ScienceReasonBelief oh yes Americans are smart :) -and no, im not american.

  • @Creaturesinsideme

well, it's actually more about how Americans MUST have their happy ending... :)

  • When i read the book the ending left me wanting a little more like i wanted to hear about her wedding or her life with Mr. Darcy but this ending just filled that void and so now i am SATISFIED!! ~ ♡

  • @AnimeWaterFall ...if you want to read about Darcy and Elizabeth's "ever after" I sugget reading the book "Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife" by Linda Berdoll ..she writes in a very "Austen-esque" style and I think you will THOROUGHLY enjoy it!

  • @AnimeWaterFall No problem! I hope you enjoy it! :)

  • Hey don't stereotype the Americans... I mean this ending is okay but the British ending isn't any better. Personally I like the BOOKS ending but maybe I'm just a crazy American.

  • sometimes even good movies overdo some things. A romantic drama should focus on setting up the audience for many various conclusions keeping them on their toes for the most part and never letting the mystery of a situation become unveiled. The end i think was too much. It needed less sweet talk and more of a bluntness to the end perhaps with them just staring at each other with only little dialog but meaningful and "clever" perhaps " I am... Mrs. Darcey" blunt, clever, and savory

  • This ending is beautiful and fits this version very well. I've seen many versions and this one I believe focuses more on the emotion the characters go through. It's more internal than say the BBC which is more external by following the book. This scene and the movie I think do a good job showing the different ranges in emotion that the characters go through than other verions.

For those thatabuse the American stereotype, get over it. Perhaps the world would be better if we looked past those.

  • Comment removed

  • does anyone have the link to the british ending? i cant find it anywhere :(

  • @autumnwind94

You don't need to look for it either. The "British" (Spanish, German ...) ending is the scene in the library between Elizabeth and her father. The film ends with the humorous words of Donald Sutherland about his younger daughters. The only scene that is missing is this one at Pemberley.

  • Americans...Ughh

  • @Dominum haha...your post stopped me. i love the simplicity of your summary of us overly-caffeinated, road-raging, supersize-me, impulsive, classics-ending-changing Americans.. i don't like 'us' all that much either much of the time. or at least the 'us' that are loud and obnoxious and that seem to make and create the headlines and the news. regardless, jane's stories have touched many of us to our very core. i'm not an expert, but i love what i know of jane. thanks.

  • @happyshiney

I'm quite glad that you were able to understand what I intended you to. No worries, you can love whoever you please. And I don't think I'd have to elaborate on being an American, cause clearly, you've got it.

  • I don't understand why everyone is up in arms about the American movie version ending with a kiss. The BBC version with Colin Firth ended the same way, with a big ol' smooch in the wedding carriage so clearly the Brits like their kisses too!

  • All girls dream of being the "incandescently happy" Mrs. Darcy.

  • This is the alternate ending for the US the Brit version ends in the field when she wakes up and walks out to find him walking to her..

  • Hmmm... This is the same ending that I've seen... And my DVD is the U.S version

  • thank god that they deleted this scene this would ruin the whole movie

  • Dammit! I wanna be Mrs. Darcy!!!!!!!!!!

(The book is unbelievable, please read it!)

  • @shortstack33 I laughed cried and had some of darcy's hurt pride when she refused him the very first time! My fave austin novel!

  • @CrazyGood88 ITA with you!

  • @shortstack33 ITA?

  • @CrazyGood88 lol sorry! I Totally Agree :D

  • @shortstack33 oh. ok! gotchu! lol!

  • My Lord, I can wait for my Mr. Darcy...Mr. Darcy....Mr. darcy

  • He's so romantic!

    I totally prefer THIS ending!

    ALTERNATIVE ENDING RULES!!!!

    hahaha

mrs. darcy... kiss... mrs. darcy... kiss... mrs. darcy... kiss... mrs.darcy... kiss... MRS. DARCY... KISS!!!!!

  • @xoxoEce well if u look at the comments most of the ppl posting liked it...

  • This is the ending that came on my DVD. Then again, i'm in Canada, not the States. How does the other version end?

  • @PirateonFleetStreet it ends with the scene of Mr. Bennet.

  • im so jealous!!!

  • Mrs. Darcy *-* why can't he call me like that at least once D:

  • why didn't they put that in there?!?!?! I love it. I waited the whole movie to see them kiss. Dangit.

  • this scene is kinda sick

  • Mrs Darcy *swoon* If only there was a Darcy in this world!!

  • oooh i love this movie! we need some mr darcy's in this town

  • blah.

  • Comment removed

  • @havering3 Right, because England produces so many great movies. lol Though I will hand it to you folks for Austen... ;)

  • pemberley is where he lives....wish there was an actual darcy....better than edward...atleast darcy is human...but both r figments of imagination.... of a man!!!a real man....

  • That is so sweet and awesome that I almost cried and I love how he keeps on saying MRS.DARCY so romantic and I've never seen the entire movie so this makes me want to see it even more

  • Apparently since I live in America, this is the only ending I got :( Which begs the question: THERE'S ANOTHER ENDING?? I knew I lived on the wrong continent....

  • @ajoyfuldawn: You aren't missing anything. Literally. I just watched what I guess is the UK version on Youtube. There were tons of deleted scenes and the movie ends immediately after her father givers her permission to marry Mr. Darcy. It felt very chopped off. Even the A&E version has a better ending. It's more true to the novel as well, but it's like 6 hours long.

  • Ugh!I hate this ending!!!

  • I love the places they chose to film this movie. Like out of a dream. Enchanting to say the least.

  • Darcy´s house is Chatsworth, near Chesterfield and the Peak District.

  • @Beatleschick1 I love the place too. And the best thing is that everyone can go there, because as i know it was filmed in Chatsworth House in UK (Peak District National Park, not far from Sheffield).

  • I'm a huge fan of the book and I thought this movie was a beautiful adaption of the story. It's not meant to follow the book piece by piece but to get to the heart of the story.

No the kiss wasn't in the book but it was one small addition to the film that portrays the happiness in Elizabeth and Darcy's new domestic life. It doesn't take anything away from the story or change it in any way.

I personallly thought it was a very sweet scene. One of the most satisfying kisss in movie history!

  • @OmgitsNeens Which movie version do you like he most? Because t seems to me that you have analized very well this amazing book.

  • I personally like the 2005 version of the book because it works as an entertaining film as well as staying true to the essence of the story. I'm a movie lover just as much as a book lover so for me it was perfect.

  • I agree with you. I adore the book, and although they changed a few things, I love the 2005 movie, because they stayed true to the essence. To make a film always means offering an interpretation of literature. I liked the interpretation of this director. He created a beautiful peace of art. The whole style of the movie stays true to the period - romanticism.

  • Very well said!

  • What is the original ( not american ) ending? Does anyone have a video of it?

  • You have seen it. The film ends with the words of Elizabeth' father (Donald Sutherland) about his younger daughters (a quote from the book).

  • it ends when keira is walking at dawn and the sees mr darcy walking up to her. They talk, i dont rememebr, somehtng like he declares his love again then they stay together and you see them bend like hugging-ish and the sun rising behind them. BETTER ENDING IN MY OPINION :D

  • Perhaps they added this as the ending in a later batch, because the dvd I have of this, which is British has this as the ending and not as an extra scene. I think either ending is great. I don't see an issue. Some people want to get up into arms over the silliest things.

  • @lizochka:

    Don't worry, I am not in arms, I'm quite a pacifist. :-)

But it is a fact (you can easily prove it by investigating) that this ending was only produced for the US-audience. On my DVD (spanish) it is not the official ending, but an extra scene. Therefore (because it is not the official ending) they didn't even synchronize it in Spanish or German. If a German or Spanish wants to see this scene he has to watch it in the English version.

  • Oh yeah, I think I remember that. I still don't think they should say it's an alternative ending, movies mess with the endings all the time!

  • Someone made a good point on another P&P video clip about this ending, they pointed out that in the book, Jane Austen eludes to how much affection they show each other after they are married. Saying that Georgiana was uncomforable at first with how much affection Elizabeth and her brother showed each other, but Elizabeth told her that it's ok to show affection for each other after you are married. So I think the kiss was right in line with that.

  • It is not about faithfulness to the book. This ending just seems too slushy to me. In my opinion the humorous words of Donald Sutherland about his younger daughters are the much better ending. (This is what I think about the film as a piece of arts, it has nothing to do with the fact that everyone - me too - enjoys to see a couple kissing if you like them. And I do!)

The ending of the 1995 miniseries isn't faithful to the book either. In the book there is no wedding scene and no kiss.

  • I have just finished the book and I noticed that in your words there is a misunderstanding about the feelings of Georgiana. She doesn't feel uncomfortable with the affection they show each other (the book doesn't mention the affection they show), but with Elizabeth' "lively, sportive, manner of talking to her brother". "He, who had always inspired in herself a respect which almost overcame her affection, she now saw the object of open pleasantry."

  • that's not even an alternative ending, it's same as on the movie!

  • It's an alternative ending because Jane Austen never writes this part in her book. The book ends with a double wedding.

  • No, the book tells us about the second proposal, about Elizabeth' conversation with her father and mother, a conversation between Elizabeth and Darcy (she wants to know when exactly he fell in love with her) and (in the last chapter) some facts about their life as a married couple. There is no wedding scene in the book. The wedding scene of the 1995 BBC-miniseries and the kiss in the wedding carriage are inventions and have nothing to do with faithfulness to the book.

  • By the way: Who wants to read the book finds the original text for free on gutenbergDOTorg

  • Of course it's an alternative ending! "Pride and Prejudice" ist a european movie (Great Britain/France) and the movie ended with the conversation between Elizabeth and her father. The "kiss ending" was only produced for the US-version of the movie. In Europe the alternative ending is part of the Bonus material on the DVD.

    Greetings from Europe!

  • Everywhere else, too, did not have this ending, I think. At least not in Asia. And though it is sweet to some extent I sort of prefer the movie without it.

  • @2566greenday It's a "alternate ending" because supposedly the original ending (the version shown in the UK) ended with the scene where Lizzy is leaving her father's study. The American or alternate ending has the kiss at the very end. So yeah, the same ending that was shown in the US is the same one that's on the DVD.

  • In my opinion this ending is just awful. Their relationship is so much better without this. Their love is shown in far better ways throughout the film, and it just seems to mean so much more when it is simply fleeting glances across the room. The scene that ends with their foreheads together is just plain adorable!

And plus, this scene makes me laugh so much every time I see it. The first Mrs Darcy is cute, albeit a bit cliche. The ones that follow are just plain hilarious. xD

  • oooh no I hated the british ending for the film. It just left off without even a chaste brush of lips!? Impossible!

  • I don't care how they worked it in, but they had to kiss at some point or it would have been a complete waste of time. That's what the whole movie was leading up to. It's a love story for heaven's sake. And this movie is "based" on Jane Austen's book. It's a movie, made for entertainment purposes, not a documentary, sorry. And the characters were already married when they kissed here, so I don't feel it was against the social rules of the time. Loved it!!!

  • The movie was not leading up to kissing, but to her finally taking his hand. His hand was shown in more than one scene. After he has helped her to get into the carriage, once more at Pemberly when she runs away from him and finally in the scene in the dawn when she touches him. A woman touching a man's hand meant much more then than it means today.

  • I just love this movie so much it makes me cry every time

  • The UK ending is better to me (and I'm French so no, it's not all a patriotic thing)...

Their relationship remains mythical and special without this final scene.

It becomes kinda 'labeled' with this scene.

  • But I do think it would've been great if the kiss was included in the second proposal scene, and if they'd at least shown the double wedding. Like in the 1995 TV series, the ending showed the double-wedding, and Lizzie and Mr. Darcy kiss while they depart in the carriage. I think that was a wonderful end.

  • Quite conventional and not very passionate if you as me. :-)

I like the hand-symbolism of the 2005 film more than that. In those times the touch of a hand meant much more than today.

Think of the "sex-scene" betweeen Michelle Pfeiffer and Daniel Day-Lewis in Scorses "The age of innocence". The only thing she takes off is her glove.

  • glad it's not the ending I saw. If they were to kiss it should have been in the 'your hands are cold' scene.

  • @Kangarieux I know! That's what I thought, too!

  • *puke*

this is such a typical hollywood edit...meh

  • Gostaria traduzido para portugues

  • Haha, yes sorry for all the Jane Austen purists out there but I do agree with tlpatches. Americans want to see a love story..and this ending for us is the complete package. If it would've ended with lizzie talking to her father that would have not been cool for Americans.

  • @missmoelove You're right about that. We like some type of ending at least.

  • Well... then dont you think that Americans should choose books with kisses and sex to make movies from?

If they want Pride and Prejudice and Jane Austen the should stick to it ^^

  • Um, the majority of American romance films do have kissing and sex in them. You obviously haven't seen any. You also need to do your research. This film was made by Working Title films which is a British production company and this ending tested better with American audiences than with British audiences so they left it out of the UK release. Like I said before, because Americans like lovey dovey romantic resolutions.

  • Oh, and I also think that it wouldn't have made as much money in America if they had left out this scene at the end of the movie..period. That was probably the whole reason why they left it in there for American audiences...so it would make more money.

  • there are a lot of books that need things added to them because authors may spend pages describing a scene that can be shown in a few seconds. in addition, by saying that it is based on Pride and Prejudice, the film is taking mainly the main themes and conflicts, and creating a different feel for the movie, a sort of modern rendition of the story to entice others to read the book and to fall in love with Darcy and Elizabeth. Besides, they kiss for about 2 seconds. lighten up

  • why didn't they include this in the movie... (though I know it's not in the book)

  • The didn't need a kiss in the book so they wouldn't need one in the movie, but it was sweet nonetheless ;P

  • and they didnt have anyother ending in the dvd

  • omfgoodness..it is just a kiss.. what is all the fuss about, really. the kiss itself is vey clean and innocent.. if you think something different from that kiss, then you obviously have the dirty mind here. i understand that in the novel, it does not mention Darcy and Lizzy kiss, but what is so wrong to see them kiss ONCE in the movie.. obviously after the ending in the novel, Darcy and lizzy will eventually kiss... and i think it is quite romantic

  • ooohh...wht the fuckin' endin for eurovision the original dvd doesn't have this stupid mr.darcy's film.....it ruins the ending,,,i'm glad i did imagine the movie with my own ending kiss scene.

  • Wow, what a brain-gougingly bad final scene.

  • true

  • I ve seen it in a european version some years ago and there was no such scene there. No way. The film ended with the last scene of the father talking to Lizi. This is such a surprise. And I do agree it is contrary to the spirit of the whole film. I prefer the implied kiss that is in the air than this.. american or not.

  • Mrs. Darcy :]

  • i'm sorry this ending just kills the movie. Throughout the movie, we can see & feel the romance between the two perfectly well without this scene. we don't need a kiss to prove their romance is real or whatever, in such an elegant movie.. eurgh:(

LOVE the rest of the movie though.. watched it tooo many times XD x

  • why is this tha alternative ending? why not the main one..? i have only discovered this ending yesterday.. i mean they dont kiss in the whole movie, not that i mind because they are so in love, but this is so different.. the best ending..

  • actually, it is the alternative ending. over in london or whatever, they'd probably throw a fit if they saw their beloved Jane Austen's book be turned into something like this. (even if it is perfect) the director person thought that we americas would more, i guess it's the only word i can use, sex in the movie, even if it's just a kiss. you have to admit, americans love the kiss scenes in almost any movie. :D

  • @tlpatches

I never complain about a good kiss. X3

  • That's the original ending!

  • I'm sure Keira didn't mind, I wouldn't

  • thanks a lot

  • hi can someone translate what he says I do not understand English (and write in English I translate it) thanks

  • Darcy: How are you this evening my dear?

Elizabeth: Very well, only I wish you would not call me my dear.

    Darcy: Why?

Elizabeth: Because its what my father always calls my mother when he's cross about something.

Darcy: What endearments am I allowed?

Elizabeth: Well let me think. Lizzy, for everyday. My pearl, for Sundays. And Goddess Divine, but only on very special occasions.

Darcy: Ah, and what shall I call you when I'm cross? Mrs. Darcy?

  • Elizabeth: No, no, you may only call me Mrs. Darcy when you are completely and perfectly and incandescently happy.

Darcy: And how are you this evening Mrs. Darcy? Mrs. Darcy. Mrs. Darcy. Mrs Darcy. Mrs. Darcy.

  • that is my favorite scene out of the whole movie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • thx for the text

  • Mr Bennett: hehehe....

  • If I can get more of Lizzie & Darcy's relationship I'll take it!

  • This ending is much better. I was disappointed by the original ending.

  • yes...and the spanish version too....but i like more this ending...it's so romantic!!!

  • Agree! We need to see them one more time after the approval of the father. This is so lovely.

  • The UK version ends with the father laughing.

  • Aw that stinks.

  • i loved the uk ending :) it was so sweet that there wasnt anything physical going on

  • what was the original ending? is it with no kiss but are they still in the mansion or is it a completely different setting?

  • mrs. darcy... mrs. darcy... mrs darcy... mrs darcy... mrs. darcy...

oh god, a wanna my own darcy

  • lol!

    totally agree!

  • SO where exactly does the UK version end?

  • I thought this was the real ending? Confused.

  • I prefer this ending! x)

  • ...that ending has nothing to do with the book nor with the mood during the whole film..... come on!... thats not mr Darcy! not all!.. the film was perfectly adapted until this ending... and it was the sexiest I've ever seen before without knowing this alternative ending!

  • I love pride and prejudice the book over all the best. Of course the advanced vocabulary is quit challenging but it's worth it! I also think that this movie did a fantastic job! But...I hated atonement with Keira knightly in it. I loved the acting but atonement was just bleah i didnt like. It's just me who doesnt like it not the movie XD

  • exactly!! the film needed no adding to the end.

It contained the best two kisses never happend

.... now its is cheessy and ordinary...!

  • But remember that this ending did not become a part of the movie ;)

  • aww i love the ending :)

  • Keira is so cute... Mr. Darcy is even cuter.. :D

  • I THINK I JUST MELTED. I love this movie! :)

  • oh, seriously?? XD lmao. that was definitely the best part. :))) so sweeeet.

  • I get weepy EVERY time!!

  • this ending is BRILLIANT.

a litttttttttle bit cheesy but still good!

    they shouldn't have cut it...
