I love the fact that there is information like this out there for girls/women out there with hair like ours. I remember being young in the eighties and the only information was Jheri Curls which sucked big time and the "JUST FOR ME" kiddie hair perm. Gotta luv YouTube!(*_*)
I long term transitioned (and well...I guess I'm still doing that). I haven't used heat on my hair for almost a year. I guess I'm going to finally cut all my relaxed hair (about an inch of it is left because they broke off by themselves because of where the 2 textures met and weak points), well, I'll cut of all my relaxed ends like in July-ish. I was saying March before, but like, I want to be about bra-strap length or really close to that before I cut off an inch (or more) of my hair.
sooooo true !!! i waited for my relaxer to leave my hair and now i' m completely natural nooo heat at all because i love how my hair is coming out naturally i don't feel the need to challenge it will straight hair too. this is my third day natural 2nd time around and doing it the RIGHT way nd i curls so good!
Yes, with all the YouTube Help and information out there, Transitioning to Natural is a Lot easier. You get a problem just find the right solution on Youtube. If we had all this information years ago alot of us would have Long Healthy Natural Hair, not store bought...
@joslynjonae omg me too. Well I've been transitioning since mid August and my hair is really thick. It's already short but I think once I hit 5 or 6 months I'm just gonna cut all the relaxed hairs off. I'm scared to cut it now cuz I just started transitioning so I'm just gonna wait a few more months.
If I don't want to do the big chop at all can I just keep my hair pressed and flat iron it out? I haven't had a perm since april 2011 and I see the difference in my hair its becoming thicker and healthier. So thus far I like it I just don't wanna chop it off.
I have a question, my hair was SO badly damaged it wasn't even an inch long, the hairdresser couldn't even wash my hair m scalp was that bad. Two weeks later I got my hair cut (Halle Berry style), colored and permed, that happened at the end of July does that still qualify as "the big chop"? I mean I haven't been to the hairdresser since (too expensive) and I feel new growth, my hair is still short. I'm just wondering.
@bsbncandey The big chop is when you cut off your relaxed hair and are left with your natural hair. Since you say you got it permed/relaxed after you got it cut, I don't think that counts as THE big chop that women going natural talk about. Are you going natural?
@nellycme I talked to a hairdresser and she said my hair was pretty much natural, it's just the ends are still permed, and since I have the short pixie cut like Halle I don't have to do the chop. She said that since my hair naturally curls when it's wet and stays that way that I don't have to worry about starting over, or anything because with the exception of the ends, my hair is already natural. But she told me if I wanted it really curly I would have to get products for it.Do you know of any?
@bsbncandey Ohh okay! You can try Kinky Curly Curling Custard or Miss Jessie's Curly Pudding. There's SO many products for curly girls though... you should definitely google some! There's a lot of brands like Carol's Daughter, Mixed Chicks... etc! Since your hair naturally curls & stays that way it shouldn't be hard for you to find a product that works for you. It's a lot of trial & error to find what you like best.
I REALLY want to do the big chop! I'm 18 and i'm transitioning and my mom is using the hot comb to blend in my new growth with my relaxed hair. I told her I want to see a naturalist whom could cut it off for me but my mom WONT Listen and says the hot comb would do just fine and i dont need the big chop. I already know That If I keep using heat im killing my curl pattern and I'll just have to cut off anyway. My hair is damaged, uneven, and stripped from the perm.
@yasmineply820 Yes you are putting yourself at risk for damaging your natural hair and curl pattern. I am currently transitioning and what i have learned is to try you best not to stress you hair and too much heat will do that. I plan to transition for 10 months and i am on month 3 right now....i plan to keep braids and proctective styles. Protective styles are the best while you transistion. Look up a lady FusionofCultures she transitioned for 2 years and she does excellent unique hairstyles.
@rikka1287 Oh yes I know that now. Congratulations on your 3 month stretch. Ive been transitioning since april but avoided heat since june after i took out my sew in for one month. Im wearing braids now since early sept. and plan on taking them out on dec. Im still thinking to braid it up or do another sew in again for the next 3 months then big chop on april. just to make sure I have enough growth & even it out.
@yasmineply820 Thanks....and congrats to you too since april....thats good...im tryin to be like you lol. And im transitioning from a short hair cut so i already know my hair will be uneven. But have you had any problems in the 7 months you have been transitioning?
@rikka1287 Well.... Not exactly. Its just that Since I have 4c type hair, I was scared on how to maintain moisture and how to manage on whats now growing out of my head. And know that my mom would try to make me heat style my hair as any oppurtunity as she can, especially going out in public, I braid it up for a couple months while searching other youtube videos trying to learn about my hair type. I finally learn moisture techniques, styles, and products. I can advise you some links.
@yasmineply820 See that is the thing....i believe my hair is in the 4 but i can't really call it a type because i spent one half of my life natural and the other permed so i really don't remember how my hair was when i was natural...i just remember it was rough lol...so i am assuming my hair is in the 4's as well. My biggest worry is what to do with it when it really grows out.

I've seen black women with hair down the "there" big chop to natural. I've done the big chop (twice-98 and 04 respectively) and transitioned 2 years solid in braids (09-11). The first 2 times was pre-youtube, before most blogs, and all of this info. Both paths had their own set backs but the braid-trans was the easiest-plus I had a braider that knew how to listen.
I have been transitioning for 9 months. I find perm rod curls work well for me. I pretty much do like you said. Wear it out a few days then I pin up a side for another day or two then make a big puff then by the last day or so I wear it in a small puff. My hair is keeping up well.
i didnt bc either i just braided my hair over n over... n eventually the permed hair fell off i just cut it short so it wud transition by itself plus my permed hair was weaker than my natural hair
wow i really wondered y my hair grwoth wasnt really showin. my hair is shoulder length n ive been going natural for since2007.i can pretty much say that the relaxed hair mostly fell off rather than i cut it gradually. i stopped straightening my hair as often since june 2010. also i notice the scraggly straight hair cuz my hair is natural bt some of it on the left side is impossible to work wit cuz its not ASS kinky as the rest...just really dry feeling. thank you very much cuz i learned alot!

<<<< not a BC'er. I'm 17 months new growth in. I may wait until year 2 or 3... :). I don't have much breakage and my relaxed hair IS healthy and always has been. I'll do a video one day.
I did a long term transition and you are so right, I used heat and I had a lot of damage! I really just started doing the right styles and caring for my hair. Mind you, I have been natural for over seven years!
I did not do the BC and I'm all natural now. It only took one year for my hair to grow out completely. I trimmed/cut it about 2 or three times during that time. I wish people wouldnt automatically put transitioning and doing the BC in the same category. I flat ironed my hair for a while when I was transitioning but after so long flat ironing was not giving me the same results :0 It's a lot to learn and I've found out a lot about how to manage my "new" hair~ :)
I transitioned for 10 months, then one day after I washed my hair, and saw that I had a had maybe 1 to 2 inches of relaxer on the ends, I just cut those relaxed tips. So I didn't do a bc. Back then I didn't even know that was an option. While transitioning I pressed my new growth with a hot comb every 2 wks to blend it with the relaxed hair. I wouldn't recommend that though, now that I know more, I would just wear a protective style like twists or braids during the transition process.
I didn't do a BC... I had permed hair in January of 2002....I wore braids and kinky twist for a year... until March of 2003. The braids and twist stripped my hair of any perm that I did have and bam... natural hair and I was ready to start my love affair with dreadlocs!
@TyRose1984 Were you a teenager when you started to transition? We're around the same age then, I started mine August of 2003 right after high school:)
@DeeJ085 Yup! I was born in 84 though, you in 85 right?? I graduated in 02, all the 85 babies in 2003! I was 18 when I did it, I was so happy!! My aunt would not allow me to get locs until I turned 18, she hated the idea of them. As they started growing down my back and got really really long she looovvveeed them!
@TyRose1984 Yep I graduated in 03, I wore crochet braids and micro braids all through middle school and high school, so after high school I wanted a new look for the new phase of my life. That summer was my last perm.:)
hi i bced about a month ago it really made me happy cause i couldnt wait to do it but once i did it i didnt kno wht to do but im happy i did it cause i dont want messy straight here curly here
thanks that help alot! it has been a month without perm and i'am trying to figure out what styles to do. i had a perm since the 9th grade, so i forgot how my hair looked natural. However i do reflect looking at my childhood pic. it looked great! my friends and family do not think i could pull it off with my usually perm. I will soon fool them then inspire others. lol
Thank you so much for your videos. I have wanted to do this for so long and I did my BC yesterday! I just got tired of transitioning and dealing with the relaxed and natural hair. I planned to transition for a year and only lasted 3 months. LOL Your videos are so informative and really played a big role in my decision making process. Thanks so much!
I did the big chop at 1 inches (had micro-braids). Then, wore my hair natural for 2 years in twists, cornrows, braids, and afros. Then finally, I locked. Started my locs with braids and in the process of growing them out (kept them short for 6 years). Come visit me on my channel. I do have photos of how long my hair was when before i locked. Thanks for sharing and love your videos!!
When I went natural I chopped all my hair off and kept it short - almost bald, really - for about a year. I wasn't trying to "go natural" - I just didn't want any hair! LOL My sister transitioned - she braided hers with extensions for months at a time and cut her ends between styles. It all depends on what look you are ok with, but there are no rules for going natural. Just do what you like :-)

@lilMsJ...I am currently in transition and I understand how u feel. The two textures are the reason I'm ready for the BC. But I do fine it easy to comb my hair while its wet. I have a bottle mixed with water and conditioner and ill spray it prior to combing. Hope this helps.
transitioning isnt that much of a problem but its the part where my natural hair meets my relaxed hair and when ever i comb it i feel like im popping off all my hair i dont know how to comb my hair so i just leave it alone which all in all makes the situation worst..does anybody know how to comb two textured hair my hasir is suffering so much from this i lost about 4 inchs this year from stragilly ends
@lilMsJ have you tried getting a good leave-in conditioner or detangler? I think combing can sometimes be any issues, becuase when you're relaxed you don't think much of it, but it different with natural hair. A lot of naturals say never comb dry hair. So I would at least try getting a leave-in conditioner or detangling spray and using those when combing. I tried to avoid the comb during my transition. :) Hope that helps.
Great video! My last relaxer was in May 2009. I began wearing satin roller sets! I got a 'semi-BC' in October. Then, I got the rest cut off in May 2010. It's okay to take you time transitioning! As Nikki stated, just be careful with heat usage! Don't do a lot of blowdrying and flat ironing, especially after the first month or two of your transition bc those roots will be the ends of your hair once you decide to cut it. Good luck to the ladies transitioning!
@lela2216 I have used them a few times since cutting off the rest of my relaxed ends. It was really nice. It was a curly, cute fro. I wore it out to the club like that one night. :)
Great video Mae! Ya, the first time I long transitionedish. Second time after a texturizer I BCd all the way. And I do agree about the heat damage tip. Good job for pointing that out!
I agree! The only thing with the long term transitioning is that women end up getting frustrated (like myself lol) and end up BCing anyway. Nonetheless, I agree with this vid because the long term is an option that many women take and succeed with. The ladies just need to continue to be patient and remember their goal. Great vid, you gave some great style ideas!
I just did my BC last week. You really helped me decide to just go for it. Your vids are so inspirational.I feel so free now. Its a great feeling. Keep up the good work.
I just BCed an hour ago. I'm so happy I did, because aside from me being impatient, I didn't want to risk changing my mind AND more breakage. To each her own! =]
@Klababy19 Awesome! I wanna do mine but everybody is like are you sure you wanna do that and now I'm like I wonder if I should lol but I'm gonna do it and put on a wig I think. Did you wear it out the whole time or cover it?
@Kaytube19 lol I thought of the same thing. But I have a mac it's from garage band. Mae their hilarious check out their channel! And your afro isssssss soooooo bomb! =]
@Kaytube19 I noticed that too! I watch "theskorpionshow" ALL the time! love them! we would probably be good friends cuz we subscribe to the same channels LOL

You sure don't! I have been transitioning my daughter over the past 9 months... and no big chop.... just hair cuts every 2 months or so... She only has a little bit to go... and she will be 100% natural.
The first time i went natural i did a bc and i didnt like it on me so i just wore weaves to grow it out after that i got a relaxer and literally the relaxer was in for like five min and i changed my mind and rinsed it out. Now i have like a blown out fro lookin thing goin on kinda like a texurizer. Anyway im going natural again but this time im transitioning for two years. I know. Pray for me??? Lol
thank you SO much :D

thanks that help alot! it has been a month without perm and i'am trying to figure out what styles to do. i had a perm since the 9th grade, so i forgot how my hair looked natural.

The best way I blended was rollersetting and wearing it curly. I also did twists which was great for blending too!

@lilMsJ...I am currently in transition and I understand how u feel. The two textures are the reason I'm ready for the BC. But I do fine it easy to comb my hair while its wet. I have a bottle mixed with water and conditioner and ill spray it prior to combing. Hope this helps.

your journey has been great!!! your hair is gorgeous!! Keep up the wonderful sharing and keep on doing you.

transitioning isnt that much of a problem but its the part where my natural hair meets my relaxed hair and when ever i comb it i feel like im popping off all my hair i dont know how to comb my hair so i just leave it alone which all in all makes the situation worst..does anybody know how to comb two textured hair my hasir is suffering so much from this i lost about 4 inchs this year from stragilly ends
lilMsJ 1 year ago

PearlfectJourney 1 year ago
@PearlfectJourney Do you still use the satin rollers now that your hair is totally natural?
lela2216 1 year ago

I just BCed an hour ago. I'm so happy I did, because aside from me being impatient, I didn't want to risk changing my mind AND more breakage. To each her own! =]

You sure don't! I have been transitioning my daughter over the past 9 months... and no big chop.... just hair cuts every 2 months or so... She only has a little bit to go... and she will be 100% natural.
Nice video : )
