D5000 has the nice screen that makes aiming reach-around shots possible and a built-in (time-lapse) interval mode, to have the same with Canon requires extra external hardware and spending extra money. Some of the program mode presets are also nice if being lazy/rushed or handing off the camera to somebody less experienced. Those unique features are what tipped my decision in favor of the Nikon because I'll actually use them.

Other than that, they're both good cameras.

The Nikon is the better camera, I played with them both before purchasing, the D5000 was easier to use and I personally thought that the image quality was superior. So what if the Canon has a slightly higher MP, I shoot most of my images on the Medium mode anyway, so what if the Canon does full HD video, I bought this type of camera specifically because I wanted to shoot stills, that feature will never get used! The features on the Nikon are far better, I'm glad I chose it over the Canon!

@rizwankhan1989 canon t2i let you control video mode manually, you can do anything with it, this t1i is good for casual video. off course with this you will have control over your lenses, with your handycams you will have to stick to whatever crap they sell you. go with the t2i, or the d90, they're both awesome still and video cameras. just keep in mind that they will be shaky... very shaky

No. The reason being that it only films with 20fps. Go for a real film camera if you are not going to be taking very many pictures and the cameras primary use will be videos.

Interesting test, Geek-Trend. A little bit superficial, but hey, it's YOUR video, and it's great that you published it. I'm a controversial Canon fan who has a Nikon D5000 due to opportunity reasons. I like the D5000's picture quality (to simplify), and controls, but I regret the lack of a Depth-of-field preview button, and lack of high-speed flash sync (both available at the Canon).

I guess it get's down to a question of price - the D5000 is quite a bit cheaper.

Regarding the Live View, I would also note that the Canon 500D not only has a much better screen, but has a much better focus mode.

In Live View, the Nikon D5000 can only use the very slow contrast focus (like a point and shoot), while the Canon 500D has a "quick focus" mode which allows the camera to flip the mirror up and focus normally instead of using a slow contrast focus.

The result is that the Canon 500D can focus much more quickly and more accurately in Live View.

I'm sorry, but I really have to disagree when it comes to the live view functionality.

It's true that the Canon 500D lacks the rotating screen, however it has a 920k pixel LCD (640x480), while the Nikon only has a 230k pixel LCD (320x240). The Canon screen is literally four times sharper, resulting in a screen that gives a much more accurate and useful reproduction of what you're looking at, especially when using it for manual focus (making it more useful on the Canon 500D).

I use Canon because I take a lot of outdoor photos but if you need it to snap around and not for photography purpose just go for Nikon. Nikons are great and very sexy looking gadgets they are also cheaper in price and great in quality. Canons are boring.. is its meant to be for professionals that are after quality images. Upper likes of nikons are offering the same but pricy

Wrong. Dxomark rates the D5000 18th, above Canon 1d and far ahead of canon eos 500d or 550d, the D5000's sensor is far superior than any entry-midrange canon available. It uses the same exact sensor of the D90, which is ahead of the D5000 in dxomark by 1 point. The d5000 overall is a very powerful midrange camera.

I was talking to Black's Photography . . . if you are focusing in Fashion , Moving objects (sport/animals) or/and landscape , Canon is the better choice . It has better colour , and more lenses to choose from . It is more pixelatted than Nikon though . I haven't used my t1i yet but I've got a week to test it :S
