He should of made it into a go kart. i tuned my carb and got slicks for it now i get 50mph im guessing i slammed the gas on a rainy day and i started drifting from side to side trying to gain control and man that thing is way to fast to be a go kart if ya ask me :D
@35Berrin It goes that fast because you geared it to. If you gear it to go 50 at its max rpm, it will. If you gear it to go 25 at max rpm, it will, and will have 2x the torque.
Those GC engines burn up cam shafts thats why they stopped making them. The GCV160 and GCV190's don't have that problem because they are vertical shaft engines. The oil in the crankcase can pool up in the valve cover and keep the plastic cam from melting.
i have a question about this engine. i have the exact same engine that is on a generator and im thinking about puting it on a go kart. the one i have has a rod sort of thing that comes out of the crankcase and when you start it up it rocks back and fourth for a couple seconds and then settles and the engine runs at a constant speed but when i pushed the rod forward it felt like it was pushing back and the engine made a rattling noise. I was wondering if this engine would work on a go kart or not
hey you should check out mine, i put it on a go kart and it ran great! until the master link came loose on my chain and flew off into my lap :P haha got that on camera
theres motors are tuned to have the load of a pump on the shaft. without that, it causes it to surge. once you put a load on it like a generator like you said it will probably smooth out
yeah like some people already said. These engines will surge at full throttle. Because they are tuned for maximum load with a pump attached to the shaft. Without the pump the engine is surging. once you attach a pump or a generator the engine will run smooth.
@MultiKhaz I am trying to get a honda gc190 ohc for my mini baja offroad bike that had a chinese jiangdong pos engine that broke teh intake roker arm mount because of excesive play. Will it surge like that at full throttle with me on the bike? Just wondering.
@Motorfordtoyota . All you would need to do is find the shop manual for that engine, mount the engine on the machine and run it. Then if it surges, adjust the governor according to the manual.
hmm....You may want to look into whether or not the governor is set properly. I had a briggs that would hunt and surge because the governor was outta whack.
Try spraying all the carburetor passages with gumout and blowing everything out with compressed air. Sounds like it is starving for fuel, as it will run good with the choke partially closed. I don`t know if this engine has any idle or speed mixture screws. Probably not. Especially in Kalifornia on the left coast.
i had the exact same problem with my gx160 on my generator. It would hunt and surge when i toke the choke off fully, so i found that the problem was a clogged pilot jet and 99 times 100 that is what causes the problem, The great thing as well is that you don' have to remove the carb
Well would ya look at that! Just look at it.

Clean the carb. Then put a load on it. Adjust the setting with the load on it.

like others have said. its likely the goveroner not set correctly for the lack of load

You need to clean out the needle valve in the carb. It's always the problem with there honda's.
