  • Wow. This could help even current car owners in obtaining (possibly) cheaper parts. I wonder how expensive it is to actually reproduce the scanned object in metal. And where would you go to do that? This is so cool, and has so much potential in all fields: medicine, art, etc.

  • @imkosherdillbill its actually funny that you say that, because one day itll be as bad as media piracy is today. its wonderful technology but its scary at the same time. and it is already becoming more readily accessible to the average person as the initial patents have just run out, so cheaper variants are coming onto the market. now days you can literally print out any material as well even metals, mind you you will still have to do a bit of finishing before they are actually usable.

  • I can't wait until this can be done with metal. Just heat the nozzle up way higher and heat up the tube transferring it to the nozzle and there you go. A metal 3D Printer. No more need for CNC and other machines. Within the next 20 years or so I think this will be done.

  • Can the digitized parts be uploaded to a database to be downloaded by others who have 3D printers and may need the same part? If all the classic car/vintage aircraft enthusiasts around the world scanned their parts, it wouldn't take long to build up a comprehensive global database of rare parts. You could charge a subscription fee.

  • @Spooie It's not a mold - 3D printing can create inner geometry in a way that no mold or CNC can. So, it just comes down to constructing the geometry in software. Of course, a laser scanner has a similar problem as a CNC - that is, some undercuts and internal structures can't be "seen" by the scanner. Usually you can reconstruct the missing parts pretty easily in software, which you end up doing anyways when you idealize the geometry.

  • @Shika511 Just run alignment. The software will figure out the axis of the positioner, and from then on all your scans will line-up as they are scanned (until you move the positioner or scanner).

  • @buffLaser2000 What is preventing going from scanner direct to hogging out of solid? Depending on the geometry of the part of course. That steam valve looked to be a candidate after a RapidWorks cleanup of the scan. The part would be much more robust as well from solid. Regards, KGB

  • @schlusselmensch Nothing. You can do that too. In fact, that is what you usually do in the end. The plastic part is useful if you want to make a test part first. Sometime you don't need to, but other times it is very useful, especially if you're making extensive changes to the design.

  • @modellabs A model part that fit would be too small after being cast due to metal shrinkage. You know the whole many liquids are a greater volume than their solid state deal? But hey it's a thought right?

  • Wouldn't this just simply make an exact copy of the original piece, with the crack and all other imperfections as well?

  • @Lesst The scan will contain the imperfections, but software called RapidWorks is used to "idealize" the shape and make it perfect again.

    Once the part is in software you can modify it all kinds of ways.

  • its a bubble jet printer that uses plastic.. they are starting to use bubble jets to print cells now so you can get a new heart printed from with your own DNA (as they can now also manufacture cells) so you can just slap the new one in.. it might be 20 years away till its cheap enough to use but still wow

  • This is cool, but at $3,000 is too expensive and uses active sensing. I accidentally discovered this company Visualsize that can construct all kinds of 3D models - partial or complete - using color photographs collected from random locations around a 3D object. They do real nice 3D faces too. The technology of Visualsize is really cool and I haven't seen anything like it. It claims to work with any consumer-market digital cameras without special equipment and user training.

  • @yryj100 Interesting system, but there's no comparison when it comes to quality and accuracy. I see lots of errors in the results from visualsize.

  • You can't make this part by using CNC...but, you can make the individual parts and put them together after the fact. interactive moving parts can only be made with a 3D "printer" type unit, like what you see in this video.

  • it would be coll if you could use a nano particle liquid ceramic as the printer material then simply put it in the kiln and you would have a ceramic part.

  • You would use the plastic model to produce an exact mold. You can then make as many new parts as you need.

  • But still, how do you go from plastic to metal? You still need the manual work there... so what's the point really??

  • You can still make everything in plastic which is very usefull, not so much in this situation though. However, they are making (or working on at least) 3D printers which prints metals too and the vision is nano printers where the printer can recreate any material so you can print anything.

  • Scientists are also working on a fusion reactor. That still doesnt mean that its going to be a reality in any nearby future. But both would no doubt be lovely to have :-)

  • You can send the same digital file (used to make the plastic print) to a CNC machine that will cut the part out of metal. Also there are 3D printers that will print directly in metal. Recent advancements allow the creation of stainless steel, ready-to-use parts.

  • Making things in metal (casting/milling/etc) = expensive

    Rapid prototyping = inexpensive

    Before producing parts in metal, it is important to prototype because you don't want any errors in the metal parts

  • ak47 blueprints are free since dunno 20 years ago, manufacturings demands dependable on the quality of the release f production, so I encourage you to produce a renewed ak47 2000 model.

  • The fact that the printer can actually make a MOVING wrench (or anything else) as one solid unit is absolutely Brilliant. Combine that with a lowcost, portable 3d scanner and you have a basement workshop that can build parts for the spaceshuttle (given the strength of the plastics used)... Very cool...

  • This stuff is already being done on the ultra-cheap. The reprap project is basically works like this printing machine, but does it for less than $1000.

  • Stereo Lith has been about years, I was making prototype parts ten years ago, the cool thing is the 3D scanner, my only worries are the tolerancing, and the machining you have to do to the finished cast parts to get them to work.

  • I like the idea that we are innovating but on the same hand im not to sure if i really crazy about something like this. To me, being somebody who is in his second year tool and die apprenticeship, it can be a little scary. When you think about the fact that this one little $3000 machine can perfectly duplicate anything you really want it to, you could easily put 50-100-150-200 skilled tradesman out of jobs. Were innovating yes great, but are we getting to smart for our own good?

  • Jay is so right about Chinese made poor quality parts on English cars.

    I have an Austin Mini and I've been replicating the parts in titanium. Often from new parts made in China. The quality is awful.

    It's nice Jay is patriotic. Over here in Blighty, they look at you like your in the KKK for buying British. : )

  • i dont know if you picked up on it but they said they make a plastic part first to see if it is functional then they take it over to a "fadal" which is a brand of cnc machine. That is when they make the fully functional part out of metal.
