You have to be able to sing close the note your trying to hit and it will bring it up to the correct pitch. If you don't sing close to it it will sound sythe like. Which is why T-Pain and other artists sound weird. If you want evidence just use your ears. For example listen to the clean vocals in the song All Bodies then listen to the clean vocals in a video of them playing it live.
