@tetongravity9 Apart from the beauty of the nature of the shots, the jumps in slo-mo, the colours of the sky, the panning, etc. I kinda dislike the look of the RED, I dunno, I haven't seen many good video samples on the web. It seems so dull and unnatural, why is this? For eg. compare with a DSLR, please watch this vid: "Being Bobby" shot with the PENTAX K-r. And tell me is it really possible to get that slo-mo effect in post with just 25 fps???
I'm putting together a crew for my first short film and I'm looking for a Red Cam to use, and someone who knows how to use it. I was lucky enough to be in a Cannes film last year and a Red Cam was used. I liked the look, and the director told me of the virtues of the Cam. I'm located in Long Beach, CA. Today's date 4/28/11 If anyone's interested, hit me up.
@petervischiofilm !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHERE DID YOU FIND A RED YOU COULD SHOOT WITH FOR 20,000????!!!!??!!??!?!?!?!?!???!!!!! I'm trying to start my own media business here in new mexico but only if i can get a RED. The cheapest full package ive priced up is 53,000
Well, all electronics have tendencies to overheat so keeping them properly shaded when outdoors or protected from sand/dust/other. Otherwise with the cameras own fan system it shouldn't overheat. Right?
What are you talking about? The Epic hasn't been released..I've known of many to work on Red's..never heard ANYTHING about overheating - ever - in fact, most filmmakers talk about how unbelievably durable they are. I just know that a lot of DP's still prefer to work with film (generation gap)..or at least..work on the arri D21, as it is far closer to film than the Red - and has the functionalities of a film camera
I was talking about prototypes. I love the look of film, wonderful. They are incredibly durable but the latest prototype of the Epic has a HUGE vent at the top center and there's a good reason lol it runs on I believe 2 or 4 batteries. I really want a 35mil adapter for my XHA1.
oh, i'm only familiar with the red itself - none of the prototype's or their functionalities.
35mm adapters can definitely be a huge upgrade, i just suggest investing in a good adapter, and just as important, invest in a good lens. also make sure you get a follow focus, or else it kind of defeats the purpose of the adapter. it's amazing what we can do now with our cameras for relatively low costs
Yeah you are right there. The trick is not going too far. I was looking at Letus Extreme 35s. Iv been asking around but im actually thinking that it would be better for me to just wait 4 years and go with something then.
perhaps, yes. i guess it just depends on where you are with your hobby (or perhaps your career?)
i'd say the letus is definitely the way to go though. either way, the XHA1 is a solid camera...just depends on what you're specifically looking at shooting i guess. i'm not sure what you paid for yours, but it's seems crazy that the Red Scarlet is releasing at a lower price point than a regular priced XHA1
i've used a canon hg10, 2008 model - it takes HD video and pictures.
most new SLR cameras take amazing HD video, even in little light, with a great depth of field..plus professional pictures of course. they're far cheaper than they used to be as well.
would be worth looking into now..especially the SLR's
I'm pretty much saying that film is better..and in my mind..always will be. There's something old and textured about it which i personally think will be near impossible to duplicate with digital technology, specifically in processing. The generation gap is a valid point. Roger Deakins states this as being one of the biggest issues with digital - not specifically the cameras- but in processing. You're missing my point entirely.
Yes you are right and I hereby apologise and will remove my comment forthwith - Thanks for the swift response - I fear that film will be eventually replaced with a digital world in favour of accessibility, speed and cost at the detriment of quality - HI-Fi enthusiasts everywhere I am sure will agree and I of course challenge anyone with a digital camera to take a better picture than one with transparency
I completely agree - it is rather scary to think that this may happen..Especially considering that over the last few years, it seems as though this is a very realistic possibility one day down the road.
@MajicPictures at the same time though, film goes to digital eventually.. if im wrong, correct me. I believe that there May be a day coming when we will be able to produce an almost better picture with digital as opposed to film.
@keithdatSKRdrift digital will never be able to replicate certain elements of film. the technology has improved drastically, and the ARRI/Panavision cameras are leading the way, the Red is still a great cam. We'll never go entirely digital, but the more production houses cut costs, the more we'll see...considering there's no real processing of the negative of course. digital looks great, but it's limited...and no matter what, there will always be people electing to shoot 35
@keithdatSKRdrift you're right, even now digital (in many ways) technically has a better picture than film. i think it comes down to usage. film look always makes a narrative more convincing - which is why digital in the movie industry tries to emulate 35mm film.
35 is scanned and processed digitally for cutting, but you still retain that perfect/gritty print. for expense reasons, it makes more sense to shoot digital...stylistically, however, film leads the charge.
PS ours (latest build) overheated four times outside !! My 435 never misses a beat and I have never had an issue on any Panavision ever - however - that does not mean to say I dislike the Red at all in fact I think it it probably is the future for all of us - but then mp3's are not even the quality of CD and yet accessibility seems to be more important - and I don't really care what its shot on so long as it is a good story good acting and well put together !! I rest my case !!
my whole point to begin with is essentially accessibility, but more importantly, price. the amount of money saved when using a D21 is rather significant, which is a far more expensive piece of equipment than the red. your Red overheated four times outside? i'm in regular contact with about 15 dp's, and have been on many red shoots. i've never experienced any over heating - and most of these shoots were last may-july. again, i'm stating my points. from my POV, you don't know shit.
the big deal here is that RED is making what was once only possible for those with millions of dollars, now on a comparable scale for under $100,000. This is potentially the end of a Hollywood centered film industry. That's a pretty big deal in my opinion.
"Glad you like"??? Are you mad? ............ LOVE. Those were only the best footage of skiing I have ever seen... Though a small bit of Beethoven would have been a nice marriage with the film itself.
