There is actually a study about this diet, and how it works to some degree. It was done with M&Ms and it showed that the people who mime ate more M&Ms would later eat less real ones. It only works for the food you are imagining though, it won't stave off hunger for everything.

i don't think comparing it to circular breathing is correct. i can circular breathe, and it's nothing to do with the voice. it's pushing air out your cheeck cavities whilst breathing in through your nose. personally i couldn't here anything unusual there, but if there was i think it'd be much more likely to do with the vestibular folds creating an overtone.
