Hey 242463, can you upload the part where Armida and Rinaldo were brought to her territory, with the latter singing D'ove son io and her replying Al fianco mio, etc? This is one lovely singing from Callas with magical charm. Please do. Thanks!
this is the most unbelievable technical accomplishment as a singer ever and it does! end in a high F no matter how much Sutherlandians have eaten all over the world to prove the opposite by inventing idiotic theories that every other! idiot repeat like a parrot ;)
One of the biggest at her prime considering her top notes alone where the biggest. When side by side with some of the known biggest female mezzo soprano voices like that of Ebi Stignani and Elena Nicolai in Norma she matched their voice sizes easily. Besides a lot of her notes had a metalic edge wich is an indication of a powerful big voice.
When I first heard about Maria I was living in Miami, Fla. I kept telling this opera buddy about her until he finally said "if you mention that (expletive) Greek once more I'll never speak to you again." Finally her Cetra Gioconda arrived, he put on the Suicidio & never shut up about Maria until the day he died!
I went hundreds of miles out of my way to see her United States debut in Chicago on Nov. 1st 1954. Norma with Simionato. Google me at:George Topinges.
What a pity we can not have this on higher quality studio recording! Such a dramatic coloratura will never be surparsed ! Brava Maria, your voice will never become commonplace!
It´s such an authentic and unique voice..and what´s more..it is addictive!!! Very few singers I have the same desire to hear them often..I feel the same about VERRET, Caballe, Julia Varady, June Anderson.
I don´t think there´s anything metallic in Callas´ voice.

@MisterSoprano
because it is against my religion to actually pick a favorite, I wont:
but I totally agree with you: for being under the age of thirty...this is absolutely mind-blowing!

Not the biggest voice? Maybe. Not a flawless voice? Maybe.
But undoubtedly the very utmost interpreter and the most outstanding personality in the history of Opera.

I heard Maria 8 times from 1954 - 1958. Spoke to her 7 times, last one on 3/18/66 at Dodge Island in Miami, FL.
