So now we know, Kaufmann can't sing everything after all. This isn't his piece and he's too good looking to boot. The original had short fat Gigli begging for remembrance from the beautiful English girl who played the love interest. Kaufmann doesn't look like the guy that the broads soon forget. This song is best sung by those "cooing" Italian tenors like Gigli, De Stefano or Tagliavini.

Judging by the ovation previous to the singing I can imagine that Jonas was adding one more number to who knows how many arias. He is obviously tired but technically speaking, his singing is wonderful. He is a Tenore di Forza, therefore he must cover his high notes much sooner than lighter tenors (light tenors cover in G, dramatic tenors somtimes from E). Then the level disparities have to do with how close he is to the mic not to his technique. I love the YouTube "experts" that preceeded me!

What happened to the ending? he seemed to skip something and went to the final note. I am not sure where he is today- musically, but seems like there was a lot of pieces to fine tune. His legato- which i think is very important in bel canto style singing is not smooth, at times he comes across very stiff. I guess they consider him a tenor, but his voice seems a little lower than a tenor. It is tough to ask a German to interpret an Italian song... more connection to the music would be nice.

@operakiet Agree. kind of push that I can feel all the way through the aria. although must admit he has a wonderful voice. just needs to open his throat. probably great Wagnerian tenor but not for Italian repertoire. I dis once a production of Turandot wit German tenor who usually sang Wagner and he was far from Italian sound too.

Unfortunately you are right. I had the same reaction.

He's pushing his way through the piece. The constriction in the throat is clearly audible to anyone who has been around a voice class for any length of time.

I clicked on the rendition without preconceptions. I wasn't determined to find fault with it. I hoped it would be a pleasant surprise. But it wasn't.

Mi ricordo che nel mondo negli anni 50 cantavano più di 60 tenori /conosciuti e sconosciuti/ e c'era lavoro per tutti.

Poi sono arrivati Pavarotti,Domingo e Carreras e loro hanno cambiato il sistema,cioè pian piano hanno eliminato tutti tenori "pericolosi" e hanno preso nel loro potere il mercato mondiale.

Poi la storia la conosciamo tutti.

Non e la legenda di Mario che ha distrutta tutto.

Yo creo que va en gustos, lo verdaderamente importante es que existan cantantes de este genero, de donde podamos seleccionar; definitivamente que no es el mejor pero creo a mi opinión muy personal que tiene un buen manejo de la voz en términos generales, a veces es difícil no hacer comparaciones, con otros cantantes sobre todo con arias tan populares. Amigos, Kauffman no tiene la voz engolada y Kraus tampoco tenía la voz apretada. Kauffman es un gran barítono con la elegante habilidad de cantar notas de tenor de una manera brillante. Krauss era un tenor lírico spinto que quizá era el último de los belcantistas de la vieja tradición italiana. Villazón si que tiene problemas; voz es hermosa pero abusa del llamado golpe de glotis y hay ya varios vídeos de gallos en notas del registro intermedio, señal de abudo vocal.

El poder de su voz, el "filo de la voz," las líneas ligadas, un fraseo incomparable y una dicción clara como la del finado Luciano y su predecesor Di Steffano. Amen a tu comentario y a la realidad de que Villazón sólo usa fuerza y golpes de glotis para alcanzar cierto volumen que por demás es insuficiente en la mayoría de las casas de Ópera. Parece que este alemán les comió el almuerzo a todos los cantantes latinos.
