  • What kind of milege you think you get out of this?

  • when you installed the tdi engine 1.9 did you used thesame tranny 4 spd? I will do this conversion on my 82 vanagon diesel with a 98 jetta tdi. don't know if I should geared the tranny or use an older air-cooled tranny which many claim will fit perfectly to the tdi engine.

  • hi.i have a 1.7 non turbo diesel in my t25.was wondering would the 1.9td engine go straight in and onto my existing gearbox?cheers.

  • mine doesnt sound too bad after all then!!

    i thought it sounded rough

  • I know that people put subaru engines vanagons, Would it be possible to put one of these diesels into a subaru 4wd wagon?

  • what engine is that? aaz code?

  • hi

can you please tell me, what code the Seat engine is and what year car it came out of? ive got a 1.6 jx big end gone, want to convert. camper sitting in garden for 18 months.

    thank you

  • hello there just wondering about the clutch, flywheel and physically mounting it to the gear box? ie is it the same bolt pattern? or is an adaptor plate needed? thanks.

  • @rgeneration

Hi, You need to use the 1.6 diesel bellhousing if you are converting from petrol to diesel, also if your diesel engine is from a passat or golf or seat etc you must use the flywheel and clutch from the 16 diesel transporter, also you need the oil sump and oilpump from the transporter as its different in the cars, best to have a donor 1.6 transporter engine complete to source the bits you need.

Hope this helps a bit, good luck

  • @SECblackmagic

do u have to use diesel fuel tank as on petrol tanks u suck in air on corners when low, or did u use a swirl pot?

  • what do u say at 1.28?

"do not have to fit the mounts?"?

same as 1.6 do u mean?

    I have an idea for more power for u;

fit the 5 cylinder version of same engine as found in audi or the 6 cylinder turbo version from a volvo or lt28 van!!!

U can get over 200bhp out of em !!!

  • Me and a friend put a non turbo 1y diesel engine into his t25 his van use to be a 2.1 petrol. we used the 2.1 box and is was perfectly fine the diesel pump is more slim on the t25 diesel (to fit under the lid)but all you have to do is bend the arm down and it clears fine. Its an easy conversion but takes a little time to make it look neat and tidy.

  • was this easy to put in, in terms of electrics? i notice its got a throttle cable. the tdi has an electronic throttle right? i want to put a TD in a scirocco but dont want the electronic hassles. i dont mind how slow it is, it will be for economy.. cheers!

  • I used the normal 1.9td injection pump from an early golf, so no electronics to worry about, just the stop selanoid, a straight non electronic 1.9 td engine in a scirocco would go great, it certainly wouldnt be slow, go for it.

  • thanks.

  • Hi, that engine seems a bit high. Did you manage to put the lid on or do you have to rebuild the lid? I didn't see the radiator, does it over heat? Considering it was a front mounted engine. Thanks.

  • Hi, the engine is exactly the same as the rear mounted ones, its just that its mounted tranverse on the front wheel drive, its the injector pump that is higher then the normal pump, the engine mounts fit straight on from the 1.6d motor, i had to rework the lid so it doesnt touch, but very little, i just took out the rib in the middle of the lid, all the water system is from the 1.6 d so no overheating whatsoever, van is in uk now, drove it there last week, no issues at all.

  • Hi Mike, Whatever you do you will need the crank center spigot bearing as the mainshaft on your VwT3 box has to locate into this bearing in the crank, whereas on all golf front wheel drive gearboxes dont, you will see what i mean when you try to fit it.

    Regards, Shawn.

  • My van is in uk now, my parents drove it there last week, no issues at all apart from a little low on power on ther hills, nevertheless she cruised at 65 to 70mph on the straight no problem, i will myself install the 1.9tdi soon, remember you will need to use the 1.6td flywheel and clutch, and most importantly install a centre crankshaft spiggot bearing, roller type or bronze are both good, i go for the bronze type myself as its easier.

    ggod luck with the conversion

  • Hi There, You have to take into account the weight of your T3 , the 1.9 TDI will need to work a lot harder than it did in the golf, therfore the 1.6td gearbox should be ok, you will notice more brisk acceration and higher top speed due to more power and ease of drive, you can always change the gearbox at a later date if you wish to a higher geared unit.

  • Hi, In this conversion ive used the 1.6 turbo diesel gearbox, its higher geared than the normal 1.6D unit and will cruise easy at 60 to 70 mph all day long, the 1.9 TD engine isnt as powerfull as you would think, its just a modest improvemnet on the 1.6 TD engine as both engines are not direct injection, so the 1.6TD box is ideal, i´m going to fit a 1.9 TDI in another van i have soon, that will be a real boost as its a 115bhp engine, but still i reckon the 1.6 TD gearbox will surfice here too.
