  • Twin engine plane, one engine blew, they could have made it to the nearest airport, but the co-pilot was instructed to transfer the fuel to the working engine, but dump the fuel instead. DAMN SHAME!

  • This part of the documentary is just heartbreaking..so so sad..

  • stupid pilots ruined such an great band

  • What a fukin' terrible story.

  • is that ronnie van zant'sasket at 6:26?

  • Comment removed

  • how was artibus so lucky??

  • @dixona8997 : His name is ARTIMUS PYLE Dickhead8997.

  • Does anyone know the name of the song playing at the beginning?

  • Why in the world?, was a band as big as LS in that POS corvair

all those underpowered buckets are dangerous the plane way too heavy

without near enough power, these people deserved a jet, poor management

decision in my book. Prove me wrong,

  • @flooringalabama I read where the members of Aerosmith looked into buying this very plane but didn't trust it.

  • When I first got into LS as a kid, I thought that "the drummer" looked like a really rough customer, but when I saw this Behind the Music when it originally aired I was like, "Wow he sounds... nothing like I would have expected." He sounds so sensitive and kind.

  • they dont show the part where he talks about cassy gaines neck cut and them holding her while shes bleedin to death, its the saddest part of the whole thing

  • @BigSexyKracker

I have been asking around a lot on this and nobody ever seems to answer my comment, but why did he make that up? I mean that's a shitty thing to do. Was it because it was more dramatic for TV? I don't know, but what would cause him to do that?

  • Who the fuk says Skynyrd was clan? Gimme a break you fukin loser putz. Fukin retard you obviously dont know what you are talking about at ALL. U know how to tie yer shoes even? That is just stoopid, you rode the little bus right?

  • wow what an amazing band and a tragic story

I hope this music lives on forever..........................

  • Even to this day it's still hard to believe that the plane went down 3 years before I was born R.I.P. Ronnie, steve and cassie

  • Anyone know how close Dean Kilpatrick were to the band?

  • @BasilFawlty3 i read in gene odom's book that dean moved from new york..and became friends with allen collins and actually lived with allen and his mom...so he became close friends with all of the band

  • they need to go back to behind the music, that was a great show

  • I have 3 worn out copies of the Live album and now on disc. At one time I had all the albums but my friends borrowed and never returned often. I regret never seeing them in concert. But now I view everything I can here on YouTube.

  • I was a big fan then and I still am. I was on my way school the morning after the crash when I heard it on the radio. My dad was taking me to school that day and he was lecturing me when I heard the story. I was very upset. I told him to stop the car and let me out just before we got to the school. Very sad. I miss them all. Friends gathered in the evening to pay our respects and we pretty much had a Skynyrd party every weekend for several weeks.

  • you said it the best

  • If Ronnie would have lived they would have been playing hippie festivals like Bonaroo with the Allman Brothers not the CMT awards. Ronnie stood for things like gun control. That isn't redneck. He was a very liberal man. He also stood against racism. "In Birmingham they love the governor Boo Boo Boo" George Wallace was a racist. Ronnie would have probably been an Obama supporter. I know that pisses rednecks off, but its probably the truth. RIP Ronnie.

  • ok billy said the pilot said to buckle up! then artimus says he is the one who played stewardess and told everybody to buckle up? i wonder whats up with that and why i heard that artimus wasnt running for help he was runnin away cause he saw mangled bodies an was scared and that came out of Billy Powells (r.i.p.)mouth on another show! what is the real story?

  • AGAIN WHERE IS RICK MEDLOCKE?

  • @MrPamelanygard he wasnt with them at this time!

  • Comment removed

  • i think artimus did everything he could to help his friends

  • notice how US Marine Artimus Pyle, in the plane crash , he was training to go to vietnam and go tout after we pulled out, and then becomes the drummer, then is in the crash being calm , making sure his friends are buckled up, then goes for help..

    semper fi,

  • lil known fact, the plane that skynard crashed in had just been leased by aerosmith, the band rode in it for a few months but their managers noticed how unsafe the plane seemed so first chance they got, the managers got rid of the plane and found a new one, not too long after that the plane was rented by skynard and the rest is history, so one band was spared another ruined

  • @chriskoob aerosmith never got on the plane

  • dislike was my fault guys meant to hit up sorry!

  • This was hands down the best"Behind The Music"episode i've seen of any bands.Long live the lynyrd skynyrd band.

  • Ronnie's father still had raw emotions after all those years. You can feel his anguish.

  • No matter how much the pilots fucked up, have respect for the dead. R.I.P Ronnie, Steve, Cassie, Allen, Billy, and Leon.

  • 7:43 lol penis billy powell....lol yea anyway this is most sad thing i have ever watched. I miss the old days.

  • @agreen350 lmao that shit is so funny

  • i hate the new skynard everyone is dead except gary, and ed

  • You forgot Artimus Pyle and Bob Burns.

  • billy powell was such a cool dude..

  • I agree....you cant replace ronnie.....the new band does some good stuff but when they try doing the old stuff it just dosent sound right....

  • this is about the saddest video ever, Skynyrd is the greatest band ever in many regards

  • I have been a Skynyrd fan for over 30 years...life goes on...JVZ does a good job on his brother's songs but has also moved them in a new direction. God n Guns sounds good to me.

  • i cant say ive been a fan for over 30 years cuz im only 18 lol but mah dad raised me on lynyrd skynyrd an he was going to the show in baton rouge...an i agree JVZ does a good job of keeping the name alive and god n guns is great but of course i love the old skynyrd 100x more.

  • Rest in Peace

    Allen Collins

    Billy Powell

    Ronnie Van Zandt

    Steve Gaines

    Cassie Gaines

    Leon Wilkinson

and the rest of the crew and passengers.

  • no , not the pilots. they should not rest in peace for being so careless with the lives of others.

  • He dumped the fucking fuel?

  • all the best one always have to die... wtf???

skynyrd, randy rhoads, dimebag, hendrix, mick ronson...etc.

  • @GRYNreaper001 Mick Ronson died of natural causes, though, didn't he? I mean it's still tragic, but its part of life. But Hendrix, Rhoads, Skynyrd, those were preventable deaths.

  • Lynyrd Skynyrd COULD be more intact than it is. Ed King and Artimus could come back and play with them. And then it wouldnt be just ONE original member. Their days are numbered. They shouldnt even call themselves Skynyrd.

  • agreed. Im a die hard fan, but there time is up. They should just become a tribute band.

  • yeah man. me too. die hard. hah. but idk at this point its not even right. it just feels like theyre bleeding off the name lynyrd skynyrd.

  • They should've call their quits when Van Zandt passed.

  • they've been a tribute band for a long time. I think Gary should just go play with Rickie Medlocke in a reconstituted Blackfoot. That would kick ass.

  • agreed...

  • I still love them skynyrds.

  • I never knew the whole story on the crash, and didn't know if all the members were on the plane, or why only some of them died. About 10 yrs ago 4 of my friends and I went to New Orleans for 5 days, and 1 day took a road trip through Alabama and parts of Florida, stopping at "good ole boy" bars along the way. Tons of ppl in those parts STILL worship the Skynard! Every bar juke box hold a bunch of Lynard Skynard. I thought that was cool!!

  • My Step Dad's best friend still has the tickets to the show Skynyrd was supposed to play on the night of the plane crash. He's not selling them.

  • i hate to say this but there hasnt been a lynyrd skynyrd since ronnie died. also ed king left and bob burns. you can wishful think all you want and relive everything coz the music is really good! but skynyrd died oct 20th 1977.everything else is for money.

  • oh god...i just wish this never happened.....if only they were still here......oh god.

  • really sad. One of the great bands just hitting their peak. At least billy is playing Ronnie again.

  • Comment removed

  • Beyond sad.. Lynyrd Skynyrd Rules!!!!!!

  • R.I.P- Ronnie Van Zant,Steve Gaines,Cassie Gaines and Dean Kilpatrick:1977;Allen Collins:1990;

    Leon Wilkeson:2001;

  • Billy Powell: 2009

  • Ironic that Billy says he thought he was going to have a heart attack and that it was actually what got him. RIP Billy, i will miss those fishin trips and talking about aviation!!

  • To critisize Billy Powell about his version of Cassies death that was edited is ridiculous. Anyone who has experienced an event of extreme violence can tell you that for some people, expressing the "dirty details" helps relieve them of pain. I understand what Billy was doing and I bet there are others out there to! Rest in Peace Billy Powell, Ronnie, Steve and Cassie. Into an Angel's arms you go.

  • RIP Billy Powell.

  • This is the best "Behind the music" ever made.

  • I have to agree.

  • @domin77148 i agree

  • @domin77148 It's one of the best. But they need to go back to the old theme music for Behind the Music. The new music sucks! I'm still trying to find out where i can get the entire BTM collection of every single one ever made, but i haven't had no such luck.

  • Lynyrd Skynyrd had nothing to do with the Klan you piece of shit.

  • wicked if u watch the tribute tour dvd they talk about not being rasict at all fucking douche

  • @RootBeerFloat05 Whoever said Skynyrd had something to do with the Klan is completly ignorant, moron. Skynyrd wasn't racist by any means. Thats why Ronnie reponded to Neil Young's songs. Because Ronnie felt like Neil was saying everyone in the south were racist which isn't true. Lynyrd Skynyrd was from the Woodstock generation. They were hippies. Pot smoking, liberal, hippies. Ronnie was a big supporter of Jimmy Carter. After they died they got painted as rednecks, but really they weren't.

  • you should watch what you say dave...and i mean that, you are a very misguided person and it shows

  • Well, then Aerosmith are lying, because it's in print in their best selling book "Walk this Way". Watch what I say indeed.....I'm a huge Skynyrd fan, it just makes me angry that such a great band was brought down when it could have been avoided.

  • Here's another contradiction with Billy, "Ronnie Van Zant didn't have a scratch on him, he hit a tree and had a massive head wound". Well, did he not have a scratch or did he have the massive head wound?

  • Ronnie Van Zant died from a massive head wound.meaning he had a big bruise on his head, not a CUT or SCRATCH,there is a diffrence, his right leg was also broken and his own father said when he saw him at the morgue he looked like he was laying there asleep.you shouldnt question anyone on here

  • I'm simply asking a question and get all these "thumbs down" reactions? Good God, people.

  • For alot of people this is a very sensitive subject,so the Skynyrd family sticks together.thats the way it should be

  • Part of this is cut. In the original airing, Billy Powell says that Cassie Gaines had a massive throat wound and girlging in her blood, kept crying that she didn't want to die until she did die.

  • If it's the truth I see no harm in him saying it. We all need the truth in everything.

  • Billy wasnt lying about what happened.Cassie and the other girl both had massive facial lacerations.Billy knew it was going to be on tv he wouldnt have lied about it .the reason the others made it a problem is because they didnt want anyone knowing she died in such a terrible way.

  • I wonder why VH1 would edit it. It's not like he pulled out a picture of the bodies or anything.

  • I think Ronnie Van Zant was a great guy, I would love to have hung around with him.

    R.I.P Ronnie

  • This makes me so sad, I would give anything to have saved them. Skynyrd's music means so much to me and I don't understand why god would do something like this to someone.

Godamn, those pilots, I hope they burn in hell.

  • God was jealous. We had them and he didn't so he took them.

  • @Jtspencer234 God is not a Jealous God. it was just their time to go God wanted them home and thats all there is to it.

  • thank you so much for posting. =( depressing to watch but oh well.

  • this is so sad. these where such amazing people with such amazing talent.

  • 5*****

  • Sad.

  • Thank you for posting. R.I.P Ronnie, Steve, Cassey, pilots and the manager:/
