For everyone who complains about Chinese handshakes: Zhang approached him with his hand held out, initiated eye contact, and spoke with his opponent. That's one of the dumbest themes of the sport.
When Mattenet is playing against a top Chinese player Zhang Jike, his usually impressive ability to engage in rally away from the table against an European player becomes totally unimpressive. He looks more like a vulnerable “sitting duck” at the mercy of a master shooter. ☆☆☆☆☆
Mattenet was not up to scratch on that match, he has many adjustement to make to really worry Zhang Jike. Mattenet has been utterly handled, unable to find a good pace and to install his game. Nonetheless, he is improving quickly as he beat Samsonov and Chuang Chi Yuan during this World Cup,, he is still too weak for Zhang Jike though.
@plot000000 Mag-net is always attacking, he attacks right from the start, but he was just being controlled in the entire match, no way out. he was forced to lob as the other side is constantly hitting the ball to areas where he could not attack at all.
You can tell when Mattenet is going to lose, its when he immediately takes steps back after the rally starts and goes into defensive mode, guaranteed to lose when he does that.
@Opalance I'm not sure he is guaranteed to lose when he goes defensive. I think it has more to do with the fact that he fought the #3 best player in the world who has nearly 600 more rating points than him.
@jwzhu Yes, Mizutani has a more consistent topspin away from the table and better footwork, his shots are of high quality overall, where Mattenet frequently misses shots or puts in weak, reaction shots.
@Opalance this defence tactic worked against Chuan Chih-Yuan (he is very small). But i think this tactic was recognized by Liu, so Zhang was playing only finishing strokes pushing Adrien far away form the table. But generally i agree with you. This kind of defence sucks. :P
he makes Adrien look like a retard. poor guy.

This match certainly shows us that Mattenet needs to make improvements to his game to take out the top players on the tour.
EdMajinLee199999 3 months ago
@opalance It's certainly not the position Mattenet wants to be in but he's a fantastic defender. See his earlier match vs Samsonov.

it's too comfortable for ZJK tat im worried lol it would be better if he had a tough match, so he could nail the world cup later today.
mattenet is just a lesser jun mizuntani far table looping style lol without a powerful enough FH BH. thanks for cutting the video!

Mag-net reduced to an amateur against the masters.
clalalalalalive 3 months ago
He decided to try to be aggressive 3 games too late. You simply can't be defensive against chinese players and expect to win.

@jluzwick Zhang is better for a reason, part of that is due to his superior strategy in staying offensive and controlling the direction and pace.

his style reminds me of Mizutani, except Mizutani is much more agile and has stronger defense.
