GSP. Royce Gracie wasn't well rounded in his prime. He only trained for his GJJ and most of the people he fought were stand up fighters which have no protection once they're on the ground.

After the sport evolved, people started realising that you needed to combine different Martial Arts to win. GSP is a more advanced fighter. Gracie also realised that he needed more than his GJJ but he's too old now.

Unless you are a black belt I highly doubt you will last more than 40 seconds. In my school Wander Braga submitts brown belts in less than 30 when asked to.

If you have no expierence try facing a purple belt first and see how well you do with them..

My point is that it is easier to avoid submission for a minute when your goal is to survive that minute as opposed when you are trying to win, but know you will fail. I'm would fight defensivly, so first Gracie would have to get me to the ground when my only goal is to avoid being taken down. I wouldn't like I'm assuming those brown belts did, initiate the contact. You fight differently when your goal is to survive then when your goal is to win.

The gi is the uniform he wore. It's a judo gi. He used to use it to gain leverage, to smother opponents and to choke opponents. They aren't allowed to wear them in the UFC anymore.

eh, I'm sure using the gi helped him a bit, but I'm sure the gracies trained using techniques that don't specifically apply to using a "gi", because they need it to apply to street use as well... and you and I both know that people don't walk around in gi's lol... Royce also doesn't really strength train and wasted down to 170#. You can see how disproportionate he looked compared to Hughes. He should fight at 185, a healthier weight for his height, and put on some muscle. I'd love to see him against Spider Silva.
