You're certainly correct to say "simple can be very scientific." That's the whole basis of identifying mathematical and scientific dynamics as elegant. Some of your questions concern factual information, and some concern policy implementation. The glaring absence in the news media of actual citations referencing the scientific literature is a problem we have to address before a really good conversation can naturally arise. Unfortunately, people have to care enough to read carefully before they can grasp what is going on in journals of climatology and atmospheric science.
Also, I'd essentially say the answer to all your previous questions is "yes," so I'm not so concerned about conflating separate issues here. One caveat, however, is that government power is necessary but not enough to solve our problems. The private sector also has an obligation to help, even if that means cuts to short-term margins of profit and some angry shareholders, because the long-term returns on proactive environmental protection are overwhelmingly compelling.

If this is necessary and understood, true entrepreneurs would find a way to succeed. I enjoy reasoning by analogy, so imagine for a moment how you might react if you personally consulted every oncologist in the country and, following a comprehensive battery of diagnostic tests, 99% of them were convinced you had cancer. Perhaps the other 1% disagreed because of false-negative test results. You would assume you had cancer and inquire about proper treatment, right? Does a logical response to global warming not follow the same pattern?

If we are sick, with 99% positivity, then the next step is to identify what and where the cancer is, what treatment options exist and the severity of the cancer relating to if treatment is worth it. At this point finding out if the illness was self inflicted or genetic is no longer relevant, But I do not believe we have identified cancer. We've seen a strange result on a test, and the argument is in interpretation. 100% positive something is going on though.
You're right, explanations do change and evolve over time. Even so, treating for cancer in the analogy does not preclude us from treating for some other disease later if our diagnosis turns out not to be correct. Actually, the treatment for global warming is way better on balance, because we do not run the risk of harming society by implementing basic environmental conservation measures, or accepting the Kyoto Protocols, where as chemotherapy is toxic and dangerous.
Also, if we're sure something is going on, and our only reasonable explanation is human activity of the industrial age, such as factory emissions of sulpher dioxide, do we not have an obligation to act even as we accept the fundamentally provisional nature of our understanding? Is this not the essence of applied science, to act wisely and competently on the basis of breathtakingly complex and perpetually incomplete information?

When the government gives you a certain amount of money that you have to use to pay for healthcare and say "here, use this money on the free market"... that is a voucher system! 2) The amount that will be given by the voucher system is capped, which is what produces that budget reduction. People on "Medicare" at 65 under Ryan's plan get $8000 to spend. If their healthcare costs more, tough.

While he pokes fun at cold fronts he also does and has made it clear that not one storm could prove or disprove anything. He is right though it is a trend. HAHAH! She say's she's being edited by Beck and that he is a hippocrate. He's only editing more of the same of what she had just said; that he's said it several times, and also clips of Hannity saying the same thing (which had nothing to do with Beck).
Her editing of Beck changes the context in which the information is presented, making it sound like he's contradicting himself, which was the point of the original segment. Can't you liberals see the difference?

For this "service", many people will support Fox News even when faced with examples of blatant misinformation/deception/douchebaggery. I'm not saying that other networks are much better, simply that Fox has got this type of "news" down to a science.

If you pay close attention to where Beck is citing Maddow citing his show, you will notice that he interrupts Bill Nye when Bill is saying that those who don't believe in global warming are unpatriotic. Now back to the same clip of Bill at the beginning of the show shown by Beck where he is NOT interrupting Bill Nye. It would seem that the video Beck uses to prove that Maddow is taking his claim out of context is doctored. If someone has the unedited bit for the Nye interview, please post it.

We totally understand why one single snow storm is not proof of any global phenomenon. Unfortunately, the obvious connotation of Beck's remarks was that global climate change is an utterly foolish idea to be derided at every opportunity. The opinions Beck promulgated demonstrate a profound ignorance of basic principles of science, and ought to be vociferously challenged, as Maddow has done repeatedly. Correcting Beck's rabid, fear-mongering ignorance is not a waste of time.

And yet the only reason for such a degenerate, insipid, mind-numbing exchange of asinine comments is ignorance of proven facts about real issues such as climate change. @quantumcodex These ignorant shows prevent the simple but important questions from being clarified. Simple can be very scientific. To quote Penn Jillette, "Is it happening? Did we cause it? If we caused it, can we stop it? .... If it's happening and we caused it and we can stop it, is it a bad thing? If all those things are true, is the way to stop it by conservation ... is the way to do that government power? ...[Yet] all this gets thrown into one question."

You're certainly correct to say "simple can be very scientific." That's the whole basis of identifying mathematical and scientific dynamics as elegant. Some of your questions concern factual information, and some concern policy implementation. Even if climate scientists are not in unanimous agreement on every point of contention, we have a moral obligation to take proactive measures protecting the environment and human civilization. Delay is not an morally defensible option.

Exactly! You've nailed it right here. A whole lot more energy and talent ought to be devoted to disseminating real science to a broader audience. The glaring absence in the news media of actual citations referencing the scientific literature is a problem we have to address before a really good conversation can naturally arise. Unfortunately, people have to care enough to read carefully before they can grasp what is going on in journals of climatology and atmospheric science.

One caveat, however, is that government power is necessary but not enough to solve our problems. The private sector also has an obligation to help, even if that means cuts to short-term margins of profit and some angry shareholders, because the long-term returns on proactive environmental protection are overwhelmingly compelling.

@quantumcodex If you are right, if it is in our control as a species to stop this predicted massive climate change, then it must be clearly identified and made readily understandable in order for our society to allow a further economic sacrifice. If this is necessary and understood, true entrepreneurs would find a way to succeed. But It is this misunderstanding of the subject that has turned the green movement into a style rather than a solution, helping no one, hurting it's own progress.

I enjoy reasoning by analogy, so imagine for a moment how you might react if you personally consulted every oncologist in the country and, following a comprehensive battery of diagnostic tests, 99% of them were convinced you had cancer. Perhaps the other 1% disagreed because of false-negative test results. You would assume you had cancer and inquire about proper treatment, right? Does a logical response to global warming not follow the same pattern?

If we are sick, with 99% positivity, then the next step is to identify what and where the cancer is, what treatment options exist and the severity of the cancer relating to if treatment is worth it. At this point finding out if the illness was self inflicted or genetic is no longer relevant, But I do not believe we have identified cancer. We've seen a strange result on a test, and the argument is in interpretation. 100% positive something is going on though.

You're right, explanations do change and evolve over time. Even so, treating for cancer in the analogy does not preclude us from treating for some other disease later if our diagnosis turns out not to be correct. Actually, the treatment for global warming is way better on balance, because we do not run the risk of harming society by implementing basic environmental conservation measures, or accepting the Kyoto Protocols, where as chemotherapy is toxic and dangerous.
