Nothing wrong in eating them I think... I mean everyone eats chicken right... but I respect Rebecca for not killing her own chicken and taking good care of them.. so humane.
@chickenbonewatt Thank you! We're moving onto 7.5 acres in the next couple months, so we'll be adding bigger coops and lots more chickens... stay tuned!
@loki1066 I'm never going to kill mine, so I guess I'll have to wait and see for that answer ;) It's more difficult to manage that issue in a tiny space, but I'm moving onto 7.5 acres in about a month. We'll have LOTS more room for a bigger flock. There are also rescues and sanctuaries that will take older chickens (and noisy roosters).
That's awesome Bex, Do you have any single sisters like you living in or around Chicago. Its very difficult finding and meeting women with similar interest around the city. Anyways just thought I'd ask.
@Allen2045 It's important to keep a good 50/50 mix of food waste and nitrogen-rich materials like newspaper. If you have a good balance, there's no smell whatsoever. If it gets a little stinky, it usually means too much food/moisture. Then you can just add scraps of paper or fibrous material to balance it out.

I want to keep chickens, but do I HAVE to kill them when they get too old?
If I don't, will I just end up with a gazillion chickens and just a couple that lay?
(P.S. you are stunning)
