I love Freni's Marguerite. It's passionate. I hate how they say her French is "bad" when it is really good. Her voice is heavy/big but so was Joan Sutherland's and people always love her! Why play favorites ? There are dozens of sopranos who sing this aria marvelously - Callas, Sass, Caballe, Scotto, Sills, Te Kenawa, Vaness, Gheorgiu, Jo, Fleming, Netrebko. Freni's Marguerite is a fiery portrayal similar to Scotto's. Love it
I think Mirella Freni is possibly my favourite soprano in the world. I don't know if it's just because I listen to her a lot and am used to her voice though
@jmahlon Agree! Your is one of the few comments I understand on this lovely singer. It seems there are a lot of under-utilised singing teachers on here?
Nothing like Freni to brighten up one's day! However, this isn't my favorite of her roles. When she was Desdemona in Otello... well, she had the most exquisite A-flat in the Ave Maria... :)
Mirella Freni est evidement la plus crédible dans ce rôle. Elle incarne une Marguerite idéale. Mais pour moi la plus grande, en tous cas au disque c'est la merveilleuse Victoria De Los Angeles! 5/5 pour Freni
I don't like the heaviness of tone that Mirella uses here, I prefer a more clarity of tone for the role of Marguerite without compromising the lyric voice. And her acting is not quite as good as Janice's - but her execution of the notes is wonderful and her vocal expression is the best of them all. 3/5.
To each his own. I rather like the "spinto" qualities in Freni's voice that she uses to great effect here. Freni was the first Marguerite I ever saw at the Lyric Opera of Chicago many years ago. I agree that as an actress she could be rather uninvolved. Nonetheless, I have great respect for artistry.
Freni's French is poor, and the voice is not as fresh and gleaming as a few years prior. However, girlish, innocent characters were a great fit for her stage persona and temperment. Her acting is charming and convincing.
Quite charming and evenly vocalized. I like the way she takes the beginning of the second verse inward. Can that be the same production as Isokoski's -- which is 26 years later!!? 4.5/4.5
She is just the best... ever.

Never a flamboyant singer, Freni was a consistently excellent and enduring one. A very well sung performance on all counts. 4.5/5
