Thanks for the video. I notice a huge loss of power when I try to restrict my hip turn, Ala the X-factor. I am talking 50 yards on drives less, and 30 yards on a 5 iron. For me I need to make a mental note to get a hip turn on my backswing or I hit weak slices because my arms have to come over the top to get back to the ball. I think you are right to say that the hips should turn freely in the back-swing; but we should retain the position of the right thigh, in the back-swing. Hogan himself did not do that, which caused his weight to turn towards his left foot; but as a naturally left sided player he could make it work from there
@DASH1ful Thanks for the comment! Both legs should and actually do extend slightly to allow the hips to turn and this is anatomically necessary; I have several videos explaining this starting with "downswing weightshift; shawn clement", "2008 golf swing review; shawn clement", "create serious speed; shawn clement" and "horse shoes and lassos; shawn clement"; Hogan, Moe, Sam Snead, Jack in his Prime, Kenny Perry and many more do this very well and the benefits greatly outweigh the alternative.
@clemshaw I think we will have to agree to differ. In my video on yt, The Reverse Hit, I manage to retain the position of my right thigh whilst turning my hip freely. This makes it easier to turn onto the front of the right foot in the down-swing, which is essential. Tiger Woods certainly has always retained the position of the right thigh in the back-swing as most modern players now do.
Thanks for the vid. I've taken 5 lessons as far as I can, and while it is up there with the ten commandments using just it I get stalled. My question is did the shot go in at the end?
hey clemshaw nice try but the only secret is" that you dont know"sorry. hogan says himself that all that is required to play good golf is to execute properly a relatively small number of true fundamental movements which the pivot is one.get back to five lessons and find the others.its a chain action.thats why he was so accurate and consistent even with a broken body.
What's your argument against the substance of what Clement says? Shawn, Hogans book talks about the kinetic sequence-hands, arms, shoulders, hips back, and the reverse down ie hips, shoulders, arms, hands. But when you swing, and what you seem to say is that you move/open the hips straight away with your takeaway move. I understand the argument about limit iot vs dont limit hips, but are you also saying dont
I think Hogans swing was misrepresented because he tought out of how he felt. feel vs real? like tigers swing; when he talks about wanting to hit more with arm momentum that hips, but in reality, his hips rotate almost violently, but also naturally and hes hands are actually behind the ball. I don't know if I can makemyself clear.
Of course, everyone wants to be able to shape their shots. I was just asking because when you swin at the ball, the trajectory seems to be to the left. thats why i asked about the draw, but i think its just the camera angle.
You're backswing looks very vertical to me. I dont know much, but it would make sense to say that it causes you to hit on the inside of the ball as you swing from in to out, which caused you to draw ball. do you hook alot?
Not at all! I enjoy hitting all shots from fades to draws both high and low and from both sides of the ball; remember Nicklaus? See "golf pro lesson coordinating arm motion with body turn" and "golf pro lesson perpetual motion drill" for a deeper understanding of the arms...Thanks for the comment! Shawn
I am a left handed golfer and have this exact problem. No matter what I try I can't maintain my tush line. At best I come off the line a couple inches. I can do it in slow motion but as soon as my swing speeds up I collapse my left hip/leg towards the ball. Have tried wall drill, etc. Any other suggestions?
tricky to relate a golf swing - I don't envy teachers ...but...
Shawn you may want to explain ( to beginners and slicers ) that they also need to wait/clear/turn their upper torso/shoulders past the ball (after/with hips) before turning on the juice in the swing. (?) And how the right arm (for RH) stays under the left with passive hands throughout. A lot of slicers can turn their hips with ease - it's upper mechanics that confuse them in relation to what your showing. ( move to a warmer place )
Thanks for the comment! This is why I have 159 videos and counting...:) As far as the arm motion, I have a video on this but what will allow the right to stay under the left as you describe is to have the proper tilt; "Golf pro lesson proper spine tilt angle" is my first of 8 on the subject and for proper sequencing I have "Golf pro lesson swing sequence", Golf Pro lesson sequence power drills" and I recommend the "golf pro lesson timing and tempo update" for the instinctive way to do it; Shawn
I'd love to hear somebody explain how it's possible for the upper torso and shoulders to turn "with hips" "past the ball" before "juice" is turned on in the swing. Sounds to me like a perfect recipe for the over-the-top move I see in at least 85% of all players below the level of pro or top amateur (and a sizeable percentage of pros, even, who aren't hitting the ball well).
Hi Shawn, this is terrific stuff! This video along with the" Downswing WeightShift video" have dramatically helped my game. The only issue I have now is with my longer irons 5-4-3( I play with blades) and I find that i cannot strike the ball in the same way as I do for my PW(130 yards)- 7 iron(170). Is there anyhting different i need to do for the longer clubs? I feel like I lose the the "hitting through the ball" feel with the longer clubs. Please help .thanks!!
You want to play the long irons like your fairway woods; see "golf pro lesson hybrids" and "golf pro lesson fairway woods and skipping technique"; Shawn
This right here is powerful stuff! This is gold. Could you please advise me on one thing. I'm finding that it can cause me to pull the ball and come a bit over the top.
Hey Potex; That is due to the spine tilt angle on the downswing; best drill for this is "golf pro lesson one leg swing no weightshift", "golf pro lesson braced tilt part 2" and the "golf pro lesson tilted spiral part 1, 2 and 3 series"; enjoy!
Hey Shawn - Thanks for the explanation. I have been reading Hogan's 5 fundamentals and started aggressively turning the left hip to initiate the downswing and spinning out causing blocks and shanks all over the place. This and your other videos have help me understand how to apply his fundamentals correctly, and along with all your other great advice my swing is back on track. Thanks again and keep up the great work (on the basis of your great youtube stuff I just ordered your DVD - cant wait!!)
If you look at the "golf pro lesson timing and tempo update" video, you will find that the body is reacting to existing momentum and tracking on the part of the arm-club unit and is facilitating the freedom of the arm swing not allowing the arms to crash into the body; your central nervous system knows how to do this already...just focus on "heavy powerful momentum through the swat to the target"
I've been working with your video's since I got them I have better ball contact and hitting it a lot strighter but for some reason I'm hitting the ball much higher I had a high ball flight as it was is their a video you have drill wise that can help lower the flight?? Thanks shawn
Sure! See "golf pro lesson one leg swing no weightshift" to begin and then continue with "one leg part 2 high and low shots" and then "golf pro lesson compress through the ball"
wow shawn, this video has helped me a ton!!!... i used to have a very flat swing and needed a strong lateral movement to square the clubface, but i've now got a more upright swing forced on to me due to a hamate fracture, and have found that my old legwork produced an over the top move, thank you for showing me the proper lowerbody movement, your knowledge of the swing is amasing and i think i'll be taking the drive up to richmond hill from waterloo pretty soon for some one on one coaching
hey shawn you said you'd be making soem new videos soon, maybe slow motion. could you do some ben hogan slow motion swings if you do make a slow motion video? thanks
Other videos to complement this one is the "Golf Pro Lesson swing sequence", "sequence power drills", downswing weightshift", and "2008 golf swing review part 1 and 2", as well as the "golf Pro lesson Tilted spiral"...Shawn
See the reply just above; you will see the solution in one of those; also, see the "golf Pro lesson on the slopes" and check out the "downhill lie"; Shawn
Have a look at the "Catapult power " video and then to the "sequence Power drills" and finally to the "Downswing weightshift" and "2008 Golf swing review" part 1 and 2 videos; You can use the "Perpetual motion drill" to blend it all together and feel how gravity is pulling the arms away from the body as the body clears in both directions catapulting the arms towards the target!
Gotta love a teacher who not only knows the golf swing, but hits it pure.. You can put a dollar bill in that divot.. I think that commenators, mainly Peter Kostis, always talks about the resistance in the hips.. As Jack would say, that's hogwash.. I know what Tiger's problem is.. To rigid in the lower body on the backswing, squats to get it on plane on the downswing, and gets up on his toes to try to save the shot, or he would hit it fat. All he needs is to allow those hips to turn and look out
This should be the first thing taught to beginners. I learned the importance of this move from reading Bobby Jones On Golf and watching his instructional movies. The result has been an almost miraculous transformation in ball striking, distance, and consistency. It is far easier on the back and rest of the body to turn the hips back and through, than all this coiling against the tension of the hips and upper body nonsense.
This is a very nice explanation. One question on the punching analogy: when you throw a punch, the hip always snap first. Does the same apply to the back swing?
The hips turn under the Pelvis-rib cage unit (see golf pro lesson learn your golf machine) so that the arms don't crash into the sides of your rib cage to allow a full width in the backswing; see the "Golf Pro Lesson Perpertual motion drill" to understand how to start the backswing off without a hitch; all my videos are listed on the "you Tube Shawn" page of my website...Thanks for the awesome question! Shawn
My last comment was meant to be a response to z7fan who criticises Shawn for not advocating the X-factor (not sure why the reply did not show up in the right place).
really well. I was at the Senior British Open at Troon this year and got to watch so many good players close up; Watson, Langer, and John Cook to name just a few. Watson and Cook's striking of the golf ball was to die for. I noticed how much they moved their legs throughout the swing. Ever since then, I've tried to work out what they were doing. This clip explains it all. Thank you.
Best instruction ever. I have been mislead by the modern teaching philosophy of almost not rotating the lower body at all during the take away, and yet you watch the most athletic and powerful player of all times, Tiger Woods allowing his hips to rotate back and not freeze, to allow for a natural weight transfer. Your spot on about your observations Clem, you should also show how the right knee remains flexed but RELAXED. Most people think maintaing right knee flex alone stops a reverse pivot.
I really enjoyed your videos and got a lot useful information. Made quite a few notes and going to try these out at the range tomorrow. Thank you for taking the time to put these tips on the web.
I disagree about the backswing unless someone needs to turn the hips in order to get a good shoulder turn. You can look at swing after swing of the best playerss in the world and the hips are turned at a minimum compared to the shoulders (Anothiny Kim, Adam Scott, Ernie Els, Tiger Woods, etc. If you rotate the hips too much on the backswing, you will lose your lower body stability. A great athelete can do either, but there is a reason the best in the world have a shorter hip turn.
It is because of short sited thinkers like you that we are still in the stone age in golf instruction; in my "Be a solid ball striker" and "How to swing WITH the body" videos you will see how the human instrument works and how it should be used to maximize the swing potential; video analysis used by pros to "validate their theories" based on pure uneducated opinions is a very dangerous thing...Now for your pros that you mentioned...
Els, since resisting with his hips in the backswing has been constantly spinning out in the downswing because he is not completing his backswing (see my "Downswing weightshift" video) and with Leadbetter, he is constantly working on hinging early to get the arms up and prevent the arms from wrapping around his body and getting stuck behind him...you have no idea how many swings this X-factor business is ruining! There is the exception of course for those who have the genes or the youth to last.
I think that the answer of this gentlemen was quite rude to you sthernguy1.You are right, most modern golf swinger are trying to keep their lower body quiet on the first part of the backswing. He is right tough about Hogan making his transition during the backswing.
This gentlemen is trying to get us back in the 70's with a loose and upright armswing.Tom Watson ,whom I respect a lot,is probably one his fav. He's allowed to teach whatever he feels right to him but a wise coach should accept critic.
And this is ruining more golf swings than helping them; when you teach 75 plus lessons per week from the tour player to the beginner; from the athlete to the desk jockey you can pass judgement; I am protecting my students; past present and future and I am perfecting what they were doing well from the 20s and earlier to the 60s; not a loose and upright but uninterrupted and fluid; when video and it's interpretations came along, we took a wrong turn in the instruction end of things...
Obviously you are a good communicator,so just try to explain to people who kindly disagree with you why you think it's not good. You see ,there is a lot of coaches around the world who are trying to find better ways of hitting the golf ball, that we should at least respect their works. And last since you're talking about ruining golf swing, let me tell you ,that even you can ruin a golf swing if what you teach is not suitable for your student. Some people are more S.Utley and others D.Pelz.Good luck.
I don't mean to come across harsh; I hear this song day in and day out; some are able to do it like Anthony Kim; others like Vijay will not...I communicate all the fine details in the following videos: "How to swing With the body", "X-out the X-factor!", "Feet together drill", "One leg drill" and many more which are on my website's "You tube Shawn" page; very complete explanations as to why on all of them and I invite you to have a look; you will then see my side of the coin...
SC emphasizes armswing - of course, but terms like 'loose' or 'upright' do not apply. The whole concept, as I understand it, is about moving the body in both directions to free up space for the arms to swing around a relatively stacked central position. Watch all the videos you will then better appreciate the coherence and consistency of this explanation of the golf swing which sets it apart from the rest.
further to my last post - Sthernguy1 is surely correct that there is always a danger of losing lower body stability; however this will not occur, if as SC emphasizes, you retain your body angles and the stacked feeling as you turn back and through. Resisting with the hips is a disaster for 99% of golfers.
The terms upright and loose perfectly apply to this type of swing unless you think there is a bad meaning for those words.I meant by loose , a free action of your arms away from your body with no direct connection with your chest on the upswing.I meant by upright that the position of your hands at the top are almost over the neck. For this swing to work properly, a golfer needs a really good timing to drop their arms passivly or actively to let their body do the work through impact. That's all.
OK I understand your point. Since SC speaks of 'letting gravity do the work' you seem to be on the same wavelength as him re arm swing, but I can't see how it is a case of letting the arms drop 'OR' letting the body do the work through impact. Surely it is a case of 'AND letting the body do the work' since if gravity is going to deploy the swing on plane through to the target, the golfer has to actively work the body/clear hips otherwise the arms will simply fall into the body. All v interesting
I couldn't disagree more with this. The X-factor ruined my game over the last two months - my upper body just isn't able to rotate unless my legs and hips allow them to. You are confusing the 1 and 2 plane swings described by Hardy. 1 plane requires less lower leg movement to create torque, whereas 2 plane requires full hip turn. Even in 1 plane the x-factor is not necesseary - just look at Ben Hogan. Thanks to Shawn this is now so much clearer to me. John.
The X-factor never ruined a golf swing, but the wrong interpretation of it killed a lot of swing. The X-factor tells you that the bigger the difference of angle between your shoulders and hips at impact, the more torque you are generating. That's all.I was never meant to be a technic. The idea is reach 90 deg.with your shoulders and let the hips passively coils and then check your angle.Nicklaus needed approx 60d on hip turn and Hogan not even 40.Different shape and flex.Good luck jcr1964
Jack Nicklaus was a 2-planer and Ben a 1-planer, I think. I don't think the x-factor as described (difference between shoulder and hip turn) is relevant to the 2-plane swing. You are right though, bad interpretation of the x-factor ruined a lot of swings, including my own for a while - but let's face it, it was very poorly described! Good luck to you too z7fan! :-)
One question - if I am understanding right, the catalyst/starting point for the downswing is the left hand side starting the turn and pulling the right round (and therefore clearing out of the way to allow the right side to come through)? Or is it gravity that starts it off, but then you pull through and "help".
Either way I'm thinking it's a turn pulled by the left hand side, because otherwise it becomes a push...is that correct?
It is very much like a tug of war; you are pulling from the right side into the left side AFTER momentum has started flowing into the downswing; the videos you want to watch to complement this one are : "Leverage Power", "Catapult Power", "Downswing Weightshift" and "Transition"...All are on the "you tube Shawn" page of my website! Thanks for the question! Shawn
I discussed with you what could cause the strain in my knee and you gave me some pointers..
However, I discussed it with a physio therapeist (sorry spelling) and he said that the hip is strongest when the feet are outward rotated (OPEN).
Never really thought about that but opening up the forward leg could restrain my knee strain if I at the same time let my heel come off? And also producing a more natural stronger right hip (links)?
Are you talking about the feet position being more open (toes pointing slightly more open with both feet?); Because yes, this is what you want (and see here) and as far as the feet rolling, you want to watch the "Feet Together Drill" video...Shawn
I am a junior golfer with a scratch handicap and I get stuck on my downswing and its not because My hips don't make room on the backswing it's because they unwind too fast on the downswing its the same reason Tiger gets stuck.
Have a look at my "Golf Pro Lesson One Leg Drill" and see if you can do it too! Many of my students hit the ball longer on one leg and when done correctly the drill will help you coordinate upper and lower body...same for the Feet together drill!
Spent all last night feeding of your great insight into hitting the golf ball and improving the golf swing. Very informative instruction. Thank you for your videos.
Love your videos, I was wondering at which point do release the hands on the way down to stick the ball or follow through, as you so well put it. is it when your left hand had reached your left thigh or leg, then ripp through the ball?
Mr. Clemshaw, you are right on Hogan's hip action. Thank you so much for explaining the concepts of my favorite golfer. Probably the best golf instruction videos I have seen on UTUBE.
Yes; other matching videos for this move are: "Golf Pro Lesson Catapult Power", "Golf Pro Lesson Fine Tuning the Best Drill", "Golf Pro Lesson Hip Leverage Power" and Golf Pro Lesson on the Slopes"; Shawn
such an important point this. i know a few very good juniors, off 5 and 9, and they both suffer from 'getting stuck' because they cannot clear effectively on the downswing. the idea of using the right side to stay in place and push off it is something im trying to get across to them!
The key here to clear better in the downswing is to make sure that the hips have cleared in the "BACKSWING" to allow the arms to stay in front of the body and not get behind in a "PRE-STUCK" position; then, they can use the natural rotary momentum to effortlessly clear in the downswing; Shawn
i have been watching your videos for some time now and have added the little knee hitch to start the backswing and it has given me proper rotation on my hips, added power off the tee, my question is do you initiate the turn with shots around the green
If you look at the short game video, you will see that the shots are based on using the shoulder unit; there is a little nudge of the right shoulder forward to start it off...
Mr. Clemshaw, you are a fantastic teacher. I've been hitting it with my hands from the top for the past 20 years and I'm an 8. After watching this video and researching the lateral shift/clering of the hips, and in particular that left hip as demoe'd in your other video, I'm killing it. Fantastic stuff. I really want to thank you for posting this!
I have been playing golf in almost 3 years, and read and watch so many golf tips. Then I stumbled with these in youtube, and I would say that this is one of the best instructional video I've ever watch. Hey I also like your secret putting. I will watch all your video. Thanks.
Excellent description. This really worked for me, and for the first time made me feel like I was actually in control of the swing and could hit with power. My swing started feeling more natural.
I've watched Moe Norman swing many many times. Very nice to see a pro actually having right heal down at impact and having some power. Well Done and well explained, thanks!

Great explanation of Hogans downswing
brown547 2 years ago
Hi Shawn, this is terrific stuff! This video along with the" Downswing WeightShift video" have dramatically helped my game. The only issue I have now is with my longer irons 5-4-3( I play with blades) and I find that i cannot strike the ball in the same way as I do for my PW(130 yards)- 7 iron(170). Is there anyhting different i need to do for the longer clubs? I feel like I lose the the "hitting through the ball" feel with the longer clubs. Please help .thanks!!

Hello Shawn.
This right here is powerful stuff! This is gold. Could you please advise me on one thing. I'm finding that it can cause me to pull the ball and come a bit over the top.
Thanks!
potex 2 years ago
Hey Potex; That is due to the spine tilt angle on the downswing; best drill for this is "golf pro lesson one leg swing no weightshift", "golf pro lesson braced tilt part 2" and the "golf pro lesson tilted spiral part 1, 2 and 3 series"; enjoy!
And thank you for the comment! Shawn

Shawn Is the movement of the LEFT hip a primary move OR is it secondary to the dropping of the arms. Tony
scorpioblue52 2 years ago
If you look at the "golf pro lesson timing and tempo update" video, you will find that the body is reacting to existing momentum and tracking on the part of the arm-club unit and is facilitating the freedom of the arm swing not allowing the arms to crash into the body; your central nervous system knows how to do this already...just focus on "heavy powerful momentum through the swat to the target"

Hi Shawn,
I've been working with your video's since I got them I have better ball contact and hitting it a lot strighter but for some reason I'm hitting the ball much higher I had a high ball flight as it was is their a video you have drill wise that can help lower the flight?? Thanks shawn

I tend to flip my left wrist in after impact at about 9 oclock. Is this bad?? If so is there a drill that can help me for this???
TheHoyster13 2 years ago

Thanks for that great comment! You have quoted a great source and have become aware of the greatest way to swing a golf club! :) Shawn

This is a very nice explanation. One question on the punching analogy: when you throw a punch, the hip always snap first. Does the same apply to the back swing?
wang1433 3 years ago
Yes!!! There it is!!!
Shawn

I tried this out today and it worked really,
really well.

Sthernguy1 3 years ago
Hey Sthernguy; Thanks for the comment;
It is because of short sited thinkers like you that we are still in the stone age in golf instruction; in my "Be a solid ball striker" and "How to swing WITH the body" videos you will see how the human instrument works and how it should be used to maximize the swing potential; video analysis used by pros to "validate their theories" based on pure uneducated opinions is a very dangerous thing...Now for your pros that you mentioned...
clemshaw 3 years ago
Els, since resisting with his hips in the backswing has been constantly spinning out in the downswing because he is not completing his backswing (see my "Downswing weightshift" video) and with Leadbetter, he is constantly working on hinging early to get the arms up and prevent the arms from wrapping around his body and getting stuck behind him...you have no idea how many swings this X-factor business is ruining! There is the exception of course for those who have the genes or the youth to last.
clemshaw 3 years ago
I think that the answer of this gentlemen was quite rude to you sthernguy1.You are right, most modern golf swinger are trying to keep their lower body quiet on the first part of the backswing. He is right tough about Hogan making his transition during the backswing.
This gentlemen is trying to get us back in the 70's with a loose and upright armswing.Tom Watson ,whom I respect a lot,is probably one his fav. He's allowed to teach whatever he feels right to him but a wise coach should accept critic.
z7fan 3 years ago

Thanks z7fan;
I don't mean to come across harsh; I hear this song day in and day out; some are able to do it like Anthony Kim; others like Vijay will not...I communicate all the fine details in the following videos: "How to swing With the body", "X-out the X-factor!", "Feet together drill", "One leg drill" and many more which are on my website's "You tube Shawn" page; very complete explanations as to why on all of them and I invite you to have a look; you will then see my side of the coin...
clemshaw 3 years ago
SC emphasizes armswing - of course, but terms like 'loose' or 'upright' do not apply. The whole concept, as I understand it, is about moving the body in both directions to free up space for the arms to swing around a relatively stacked central position. Watch all the videos you will then better appreciate the coherence and consistency of this explanation of the golf swing which sets it apart from the rest.
johnmaddysebsoph 3 years ago
further to my last post - Sthernguy1 is surely correct that there is always a danger of losing lower body stability; however this will not occur, if as SC emphasizes, you retain your body angles and the stacked feeling as you turn back and through. Resisting with the hips is a disaster for 99% of golfers.
johnmaddysebsoph 3 years ago
The terms upright and loose perfectly apply to this type of swing unless you think there is a bad meaning for those words.I meant by loose , a free action of your arms away from your body with no direct connection with your chest on the upswing.I meant by upright that the position of your hands at the top are almost over the neck. For this swing to work properly, a golfer needs a really good timing to drop their arms passivly or actively to let their body do the work through impact. That's all.
z7fan 3 years ago
OK I understand your point. Since SC speaks of 'letting gravity do the work' you seem to be on the same wavelength as him re arm swing, but I can't see how it is a case of letting the arms drop 'OR' letting the body do the work through impact. Surely it is a case of 'AND letting the body do the work' since if gravity is going to deploy the swing on plane through to the target, the golfer has to actively work the body/clear hips otherwise the arms will simply fall into the body. All v interesting
johnmaddysebsoph 3 years ago
I couldn't disagree more with this. The X-factor ruined my game over the last two months - my upper body just isn't able to rotate unless my legs and hips allow them to. You are confusing the 1 and 2 plane swings described by Hardy. 1 plane requires less lower leg movement to create torque, whereas 2 plane requires full hip turn. Even in 1 plane the x-factor is not necesseary - just look at Ben Hogan. Thanks to Shawn this is now so much clearer to me. John.
jcr1964 3 years ago
The X-factor never ruined a golf swing, but the wrong interpretation of it killed a lot of swing. The X-factor tells you that the bigger the difference of angle between your shoulders and hips at impact, the more torque you are generating. That's all.I was never meant to be a technic. The idea is reach 90 deg.with your shoulders and let the hips passively coils and then check your angle.Nicklaus needed approx 60d on hip turn and Hogan not even 40.Different shape and flex.Good luck jcr1964
z7fan 3 years ago
Jack Nicklaus was a 2-planer and Ben a 1-planer, I think. I don't think the x-factor as described (difference between shoulder and hip turn) is relevant to the 2-plane swing. You are right though, bad interpretation of the x-factor ruined a lot of swings, including my own for a while - but let's face it, it was very poorly described! Good luck to you too z7fan! :-)
jcr1964 3 years ago
One question - if I am understanding right, the catalyst/starting point for the downswing is the left hand side starting the turn and pulling the right round (and therefore clearing out of the way to allow the right side to come through)? Or is it gravity that starts it off, but then you pull through and "help".
Either way I'm thinking it's a turn pulled by the left hand side, because otherwise it becomes a push...is that correct?
ruud76 3 years ago
It is very much like a tug of war; you are pulling from the right side into the left side AFTER momentum has started flowing into the downswing; the videos you want to watch to complement this one are : "Leverage Power", "Catapult Power", "Downswing Weightshift" and "Transition"...All are on the "you tube Shawn" page of my website! Thanks for the question! Shawn

Not sure if this is the right video but ill try.
Scampern 3 years ago
Are you talking about the feet position being more open (toes pointing slightly more open with both feet?); Because yes, this is what you want (and see here) and as far as the feet rolling, you want to watch the "Feet Together Drill" video...Shawn
clemshaw 3 years ago
That was exactly what I meant and he said to me.
He said " The hip is stronger in that outward rotated position, Just as when you sit down to relax, you never sit completely straight with your toes."
So I Guess the slight open toes are anatomically correct so I will try that out combined with the rolling of the feet.
Scampern 3 years ago
That will work! Shawn

I am a junior golfer with a scratch handicap and I get stuck on my downswing and its not because My hips don't make room on the backswing it's because they unwind too fast on the downswing its the same reason Tiger gets stuck.

such an important point this. i know a few very good juniors, off 5 and 9, and they both suffer from 'getting stuck' because they cannot clear effectively on the downswing. the idea of using the right side to stay in place and push off it is something im trying to get across to them!
pecky1234 4 years ago
The key here to clear better in the downswing is to make sure that the hips have cleared in the "BACKSWING" to allow the arms to stay in front of the body and not get behind in a "PRE-STUCK" position; then, they can use the natural rotary momentum to effortlessly clear in the downswing; Shawn
