Whenver this song was played on TOTP, they cut to drawings of characters with bells, so reassure the audience that this wasn't a song about Chuck playing with his cock. So as a christmas treat, they got Rolf in to draw them as the song was playing

I think I can remember reading somewhere that Chuck used to do this song live for a bit of fun and nothing more, but when a bootleg copy of it surfaced of him singing live, he had to quickly release one of his own...or something to that effect!

It's not the TOTP audience, it's the single, which was recorded live. That's why Rolf is there, because Chuck Berry couldn't make it & they had no video for it :)
