  • Love it. Thanks for making and posting. I have played guitar for last 45 yrs. Ready to expand!! I love this instrument and your playing.

What is a good brand or maker of these instruments? Where can I get one? do you like better than esraj? What, if any, are the differences?

  • KhayabHaaaattt!!!

  • Me and that babe shredding the sarangi are arranged to wed.

  • sir, you just broke my heart

  • wow congrats, you are a lucky man indeed

    Dilip Saraf

  • she is so young to be such a virtuoso! Bravo!

  • heyyy tht's my name!!! love the raag...thnx 4 posting this video...!!!

  • Wow! What fine sarangi playing! I only wish the sound quality was better. Does she concertize?

  • Great stuff !! I suggest you link this video to DynamycDesi - they are good platform to promote and also give weekly awards to such great talents

  • It's very difficult to play saranghi even for men. Realy she is a very talented lady. Great and beautiful.

  • what a sexist comment to make. What does gender have to do with playing well. It's all in the riyaz and sadhana.

  • something you will understand only if you know the history of the sarangi. It's not a sexist comment at all. It has to do with the musical world of Indian and the social stigma the sarangi carries.

  • I understand that sarangi is yet to escape the social stigma of prostitution. But that is exactly my point: Why is it that female musicians playing sarangi are associated with prostitution whereas male musicians are not?

  • Well, it's not the musician themselves that are associated with prostitution, it's the instrument itself. And frankly, the sarangi has always been played by male musicians in the past. It was promoted as a solo concert instrument by Ram Narayan, distancing the instrument from its original context. And the fact that a lady has the "courage" to pick up a "men's" instrument is remarkable. Its breaking the social norm. That's why the comment was not sexist at all.

  • You are completely right - it would be incorrect to associate the musician with the past of the instrument and yes it is commendable that she is breaking a social norm. But, what does breaking social norm have to do with 'it's very difficult to play saranghi even for men'?

  • I am guessing what the person means is that it is even difficult for men to pick up a instrument with such social stigma because of things such as family approval and getting lessons and such. I don't think the person means difficult technical-wise. You know what i mean? Well, I might be wrong about that person's intent though but this is just what i thought.

  • If you agree that the stigma affects women more than men, then you are also observing a gender bias in this. If a European told you, 'hey you are good, despite being from India!' as a reference to our third world status what would you think of them?

In the same way Shilandy's comment acknowledges this subtle bias and further reinforces it in the same statement

(although I am sure he/she didn't mean to)

  • The social stigma of the sarangi is very clearly depicted in the book "A Suitable Boy" by Vikram Seth.

  • Methinks you would benefit in finding a more constructive outlet for your discontent with historical social gender inequalities, and people's freedom to refer to such. Perhaps learning a new instrument would be a healthy subsumation?

  • Thanks for your concern. But, my point was not about historical bias, but the more contemporary forms as put forward by Shilandy. Statements like these are all too common nowadays. "You did X despite being of gender Y" - this is subtle way of underscoring that 'this is not the done thing by gender Y, hey look we have an exception!'. Sexist bias? make up your own mind. Think energy spent on social biases is spent better? I don't agree.

  • I guess when it comes to music ... if you have the ear tuned for it ... it does not matter what string equipment is it. Coming back to who is playing the instrument, dude / babe grow up - are you the person of the 21st century atleast? lol.

  • THIS IS WHY I AM PROUD TO BE INDIAN.

  • @spydr86
